The small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) SNORD116 is a small non-coding RNA of interest across multiple biomedical fields of research. Much of the investigation into SNORD116 has been undertaken in the context of the congenital disease Prader-Willi syndrome, wherein SNORD116 expression is lost. However, emerging evidence indicates wider roles in various disease and tissue contexts such as cellular growth, metabolism and signalling. Nevertheless, a conclusive mechanism of action for SNORD116 remains to be established. Here, we review the key findings from these investigations, with the aim of identifyi

The term skin fragility disorders describes a group of conditions in which the structural integrity of the skin is compromised and its resistance to external shear forces diminished. Skin fragility can have different causes, ranging from genetic variations to inflammatory or physical phenomena. The genetic skin fragility disorders, collectively called epidermolysis bullosa, serve as a paradigm for the study of causes and mechanisms of skin fragility. Recent biomedical research has revealed substantial genetic heterogeneity of the epidermolysis bullosa group, delivered ample new knowledge on it

There is a moral obligation to minimize pain in pigs used for human benefit. In livestock production, pigs experience pain caused by management procedures, e.g., castration and tail docking, injuries from fighting or poor housing conditions, "management diseases" like mastitis or streptococcal meningitis, and at parturition. Pigs used in biomedical research undergo procedures that are regarded as painful in humans, but do not receive similar levels of analgesia, and pet pigs also experience potentially painful conditions. In all contexts, accurate pain assessment is a prerequisite in (a) the e

Numerous observers have commented on the cultural prominence of breast cancer in North America. However, although popular and biomedical conceptions of cancer survivorship have been influenced to an inordinate degree by breast cancer, few researchers have examined the impact of dominant discourses on people diagnosed with other forms of cancer. Drawing on interviews with 32 Canadian men and women with a history of cancer conducted between 2010 and 2013, I demonstrate that breast cancer became central to their own experiences of cancer, providing an important lens through which to understand th

PURPOSE: Mice are commonly used in biomedical research, and euthanasia is an important part of mouse husbandry. Approved, humane methods of euthanasia are designed to minimize the potential for pain or discomfort, but may also influence the measurement of experimental variables.
METHODS: We compared the effects of two approved methods of mouse euthanasia on the levels of retinal dopamine. We examined the level of retinal dopamine, a commonly studied neuromodulator, following euthanasia by carbon dioxide (CO₂)-induced asphyxiation or by cervical dislocation.
RESULTS: We found that the level o

Prediction of drug action in human cells is a major challenge in biomedical research. Additionally, there is strong interest in finding new applications for approved drugs and identifying potential side effects. We present a computational strategy to predict mechanisms, risks and potential new domains of drug treatment on the basis of target profiles acquired through chemical proteomics. Functional protein-protein interaction networks that share one biological function are constructed and their crosstalk with the drug is scored regarding function disruption. We apply this procedure to the targ

This systematic review explores the effects of dysphagia treatment for Parkinson's disease. The review includes rehabilitative, surgical, pharmacologic, and other treatments. Only oropharyngeal dysphagia is selected for this literature search, excluding dysphagia due to esophageal or gastric disorders. The effects of deep brain stimulation on dysphagia are not included. In general, the literature concerning dysphagia treatment in Parkinson's disease is rather limited. Most effect studies show diverse methodologic problems. Multiple case studies and trials are identified by searching biomedical

Trypanosoma cruzi (Schyzotrypanum, Chagas, 1909), and Chagas disease are endemic in captive-reared baboons at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, San Antonio, Texas. We obtained PCR amplification products from DNA extracted from sucking lice collected from the hair and skin of T. cruzi-infected baboons, with specific nested sets of primers for the protozoan kinetoplast DNA, and nuclear DNA. These products were hybridized to their complementary internal sequences. Selected sequences were cloned and sequencing established the presence of T. cruzi nuclear DNA, and minicircle kDNA. C

Over the past three decades, intensive studies of murine schistosomiasis have provided important clues to the understanding of the human disease, but growing evidence suggests that these results derived from highly inbred strains of mice might not have direct applicability to the human infection. Recent data based on the baboon indicate that infection in this non-human primate might mirror the human situation. In this review, Mramba Nyindo and Idle Farah demonstrate that baboons provide an excellent non-human primate model that produces pathology and disease closely resembling that observed in

Proper evaluation of clinical innovations and of the process of their diffusion is essential for the development of sound health care policy. This case study examines transcutaneous oxygen monitoring in neonatal intensive care, a procedure that was rapidly adopted in the late 1970s as a scientific breakthrough of great promise, then all but abandoned within a decade in favor of pulse oximetry, a still more recent technology. The study incorporates the results of interviews with representatives of industry as well as biomedical researchers and clinicians involved with these devices. Factors in

To determine the natural filarial infections in east african nonhuman primates, we initiated a screening study at the Institute of Primate Research (IPR) in 1985. We report the findings of this study for the period between 1985 and 1988. Animals screened were wild-caught from different geographical regions of Kenya for various biomedical studies at IPR. We have recovered three dermal filariae from the animals. Two of these parasites are new and have never been described before. Based on demonstratable microfilariae (mf) there was a total infection rate of 67.10%. The adult stages of these fila

Cardiovascular disease has been the focus of extensive biomedical research, yet it remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. One recent approach to support scientific discovery has been the development of large-scale population-based prospective studies that couple phenotypic data, including outcomes, to collection and analysis of biological samples. Large, data-dense biobanks, particularly those linked to electronic health records (including laboratory, electrocardiographic, imaging, and therapeutic data) and genomic data, have demonstrated value for interdisciplinary rese

Spatial omics has transformed biomedical research by uncovering the molecular characterization of biological systems while preserving spatial context. Among these approaches, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) provides a label-free, in situ visualization of diverse molecular classes, including metabolites, lipids, proteins, and glycans. Recent advances in instrumentation, sample preparation, and data acquisition have pushed MSI into the field of single-cell analysis, providing unprecedented access to cellular heterogeneity and molecular states across biological contexts. Here, we review current s

The integration of vascular and peripheral nerve components into bioengineered human skin equivalents (HSEs) represents a major advancement in regenerative medicine and biomedical research. While research has established vascularized HSE models, the role of neurovascular interactions in skin physiology and pathophysiology remains underexplored, particularly in translational or clinical contexts. These interactions are crucial for sensory perception, nutrient transport, thermoregulation, and immune modulation, making the development of vascularized and innervated HSE an important goal. Here, we

Primate social hair plucking (SHP) has been posited to be prosocial or agonistic, though the health-associated concerns of SHP are less frequently explored. We studied SHP in seven mixed-sex groups of captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), at the National Biomedical Research Institute. We examined whether individual rates of SHP were associated with grooming, aggression, and socio-demographic characteristics. We also examined whether SHP rates were associated with alopecia, body condition, and hair cortisol concentrations. Rates of SHP production and reception were similar to grooming and a
