Parental history of hypertension was associated with significantly lower venipuncture pain ratings in women with little or no blood donation experience. Healthy men (N = 288) and women (N = 434) presenting at Red Cross blood donor clinics provided pain ratings in response to an initial blood sample and venipuncture for blood donation. Blood donation behaviour was studied in 809 residents of the Greater Athens area to identify socio-economic and attitudinal factors and level of knowledge about blood donation related to donor behaviour. The sample was randomly selected and consisted of men and women aged 18-65, the legally defined age for donation. The experiment examines whether the mechanisms responsible for the autoregulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in response to hypotension were affected during the initial phase of cortical spreading depression (CSD). Developmental change of mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) and resistance index of the basilar artery (BA), as well as the changes in MBFV of the BA and the middle cerebral artery (MCA) during sleep and hyperventilation, were studied using transcranial Doppler sonography in healthy Japanese subjects. In experienced marijuana smokers, marijuana smoking was accompanied by a significant bilateral increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) especially in the frontal regions and cerebral blood velocity.
