A retrospective study was made of 5218 congenital cardiopathies treated between 1982 and 1998 in a medico-surgical department of paediatric cardiology. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is increasingly used in cardiology, cardiac surgery and intensive care. Its complications are rare. We report a case of perforation of the oesophagus after TOE in a 71-year-old woman, scheduled for an elective aortic valve replacement. Studies were done on blood eosinophils from four patients with raised blood eosinophil counts and heart failure. In three of the patients cardiological studies demonstrated the distinctive endocardial lesions and restrictive cardiomyopathy of Löffler's endocarditis and endomyocardial fibrosis.
