Influence of the Number of Cervical Fusion Levels on Cervical Spine Motion and Health-Related Quality of Life.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of the number of cervical fusion levels on total cervical motion and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with solid anterior cervical fusions (ACFs). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Few studies have analyzed the degree to which cervical range of motion (ROM) and HRQoL are affected by the number of cervical fusion segments. METHODS: We analyzed a cohort of patients who underwent ACF for degenerative disc disease. To assess the clinical outcomes and HRQoL, preoperative, 1- and 2-year postoperative neck and arm

Endovascular Occlusion of Cervical Internal Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm in a Child Treated by N-Butyl Cyanoacrylate: A Rare Case Report.

We report a rare case of spontaneous extracranial cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) pseudoaneurysm in a female child aged 3 years who presented with a swelling in the neck which had bled following an attempted incision as it had been thought to be an abscess. A CT angiogram and an MR angiogram were not very conclusive to diagnose the exact site of origin and the morphology of the aneurysm. Digital subtraction angiography revealed a dissecting pseudoaneurysm of the right extracranial cervical ICA. The right ICA was ending as a pseudosac, and the right cerebral circulation was filling up th

Intradural migration of cervical posterior fixation rods.

BACKGROUND: Instrumented spinal fixations are an important tool in the management of traumatic conditions and delayed complications are rare. CASE REPORT: We present a case of open reduction and fixation of traumatic C5/6 facet fracture dislocation with late complication in the form of intradural hardware migration. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report of an intradural rod migration distant to the initial surgery in a patient without posterior decompression. This highlights the need for long-term follow-up of patients with spinal instrumentation.

Comparison of plate-cage construct and stand-alone anchored spacer in the surgical treatment of three-level cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a preliminary clinical study.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Although stand-alone cages were advocated to be superior to plate-cage construct (PCC) because of comparable clinical outcomes and fewer plate-related complications, cage dislocation and subsidence were frequently mentioned in multilevel fusion. There are some concerns about whether these issues can be effectively prevented in multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) by stand-alone anchored spacer (SAAS). PURPOSE: The aim was to compare clinical outcomes, radiologic parameters, and complications of PCC and SAAS in the treatment of three-level cervical spon

Head and cervical spine posture in behaving rats: implications for modeling human conditions involving the head and cervical spine.

The aim of this study was to define the temporal and spatial (postural) characteristics of the head and cervical vertebral column (spine) of behaving rats in order to better understand their suitability as a model to study human conditions involving the head and neck. Time spent in each of four behavioral postures was determined from video tape recordings of rats (n = 10) in the absence and presence of an intruder rat. Plain film radiographic examination of a subset of these rats (n = 5) in each of these postures allowed measurement of head and cervical vertebral column positions adopted by th

[Cervico-sternotomy for thoracic inlet conditions in children].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neither cervicotomy nor postero-lateral thoracotomy allow safe surgical access to the lower cervical spine and high posterior mediastinum with full control of the vascular and neural structures involved. We report our favorable experience with cervico-sternotomy for accessing this region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients were operated upon between 1998 and 2011 for either removal of huge cervico-thoracic neural ganglioneuromas (n = 2) or anterior arthrodesis for congenital (n = 2), neuropathic (n = 1) or osteolytic scoliosis (n = 1). In all cases, cervicotomy was followed by

Growing heterotopic calcification in the prevertebral space of a cervical spine as a late complication of irradiation: case report.

Heterotopic calcification following head and neck irradiation has rarely been reported. It usually develops as a late complication of radiotherapy in patients with malignancies, including breast cancer, lymphoma, and genitourinary malignancies. The occurrence of heterotopic calcification in the prevertebral space of the cervical spine has not been described as a late complication of irradiation. Here, we report a case of prevertebral heterotopic calcification in a patient with history of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for tonsil cancer 21 years ago.

Traumatic spondylolisthesis and spondyloptosis of the subaxial cervical spine without neurological deficits: closed re-alignment, surgical options and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical subaxial malalignment due to complete or partial post-traumatic dislocation is generally associated to neurological impairment of ranging severity. Literature lacks reporting this entity in patients with no neurological issues. Cervical traction is not widely accepted in treating this kind of injury, due to its potential for neurological damage, although surgery seems to represent the gold standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied in detail 18 cervical subaxial severe dislocations and ptosis, especially analyzing 2 personal cases plus 5 from the literature without neu

Multidetector CT of blunt cervical spine trauma in adults.

A number of new developments in cervical spine imaging have transpired since the introduction of 64-section computed tomographic (CT) scanners in 2004. An increasing body of evidence favors the use of multidetector CT as a stand-alone screening test for excluding cervical injuries in polytrauma patients with obtundation. A new grading scale that is based on CT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings, the cervical spine Subaxial Injury Classification and Scoring (SLIC) system, is gaining acceptance among spine surgeons. Radiographic measurements described for the evaluation of craniocervic

Holospinal epidural abscess of the spinal axis: two illustrative cases with review of treatment strategies and surgical techniques.

Despite the increasing prevalence of spinal infections, the subcategory of holospinal epidural abscesses (HEAs) is extremely infrequent and requires unique management. Panspinal imaging (preferably MRI), modern aggressive antibiotic therapy, and prompt surgical intervention remain the standard of care for all spinal axis infections including HEAs; however, the surgical decision making on timing and extent of the procedure still remain ill defined for HEAs. Decompression including skip laminectomies or laminoplasties is described, with varied clinical outcomes. In this review the authors presen

Cervical-petrous internal carotid artery pseudoaneurysm presenting with otorrhagia treated with endovascular techniques.

Cervical-petrous internal carotid artery (CP-ICA) pseudoaneurysms are rare and have different etiologies, presentations, and treatment options. A middle-aged patient with a history of chronic otitis media presented with acute otorrhagia and was found to have a left-sided CP-ICA pseudoaneurysm. The patient was a poor surgical candidate with difficult arterial access. The pseudoaneurysm was treated with stand-alone coiling via a left brachial approach with persistent contrast filling seen only in the aneurysm neck at the end of the procedure. The patient re-presented 12 days later with repeat he
