Intestine microbiota and SCFAs response in naturally Cryptosporidium-infected plateau yaks.

Diarrhea is a severe bovine disease, globally prevalent in farm animals with a decrease in milk production and a low fertility rate. Cryptosporidium spp. are important zoonotic agents of bovine diarrhea. However, little is known about microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) changes in yaks infected with Cryptosporidium spp. Therefore, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing and detected the concentrations of SCFAs in Cryptosporidium-infected yaks. Results showed that over 80,000 raw and 70,000 filtered sequences were prevalent in yak samples. Shannon (p<0.01) and Simpson (p<0.01) were both sig

Approach to primary immunodeficiency.

Primary immunodeficiency diseases are inherited defects of the innate or adaptive arms of the immune system that lead to an increase in the incidence, frequency, or severity of infections and/or immune dysregulation. There may be defects in the adaptive arm of the immune system, including combined immunodeficiencies and antibody deficiency syndromes, or abnormalities in innate immunity, such as defects of phagocytes, the complement pathway, or toll-like receptor mediated signaling. Recurrent sinopulmonary infections with encapsulated bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae type B or Streptococ

An Investigation of a Cluster of Parapoxvirus Cases in Missouri, Feb-May 2006: Epidemiologic, Clinical and Molecular Aspects.

In the spring of 2006, four human cases of parapoxvirus infections in Missouri residents were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two of which were initially diagnosed as cutaneous anthrax. This investigation was conducted to determine the level of recognition of zoonotic parapoxvirus infections and prevention measures, the degree to which veterinarians may be consulted on human infections and what forces were behind this perceived increase in reported infections. Interviews were conducted and clinical and environmental sampling was performed. Swab and scab specim

Comparison of annual and biannual mass antibiotic administration for elimination of infectious trachoma.

CONTEXT: Treatment recommendations assume that repeated mass antibiotic distributions can control, but not eradicate or even locally eliminate, the ocular strains of chlamydia that cause trachoma. Elimination may be an important end point because of concern that infection will return to communities that have lost immunity to chlamydia after antibiotics are discontinued. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether biannual treatment can eliminate ocular chlamydial infection from preschool children and to compare results with the World Health Organization-recommended annual treatment. A cohort study to identify risk factors for Plasmodium falciparum infection in Burkinabe children: implications for other high burden high impact countries.

BACKGROUND: Progress in controlling malaria has stalled in recent years. Today the malaria burden is increasingly concentrated in a few countries, including Burkina Faso, where malaria is not declining. A cohort study was conducted to identify risk factors for malaria infection in children in southwest Burkina Faso, an area with high insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage and insecticide-resistant vectors. METHODS: Incidence of Plasmodium falciparum infection was measured in 252 children aged 5 to 15 years, using active and passive detection, during the 2017 transmission season, following cle

Human immunodeficiency virus infection in children.

The transmission, diagnosis, and clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children up to 13 years of age are reviewed, and maintenance and prophylactic drug therapies for these patients are discussed. HIV can be transmitted from mother to infant in utero, during delivery, or through breast milk. Perinatal transmission accounts for almost 90% of all pediatric HIV infections. HIV infection can be diagnosed with HIV culturing, polymerase chain reaction testing, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the Western blot antibody assay, or the p24 core-antigen assay.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus induces tight junction barrier dysfunction and cell death in porcine glandular endometrial epithelial cells.

Reproductive failure caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is characterized by embryonic death and weak-born piglets and is associated with placental cell apoptosis and impairment of endometrial integrity. Here, we aimed to determine whether endometrial epithelial barrier function and viability were altered following PRRSV type 1 or type 2 infection. PRRSV inoculation was examined at the apical or basolateral side of porcine glandular endometrial epithelial cell cultures isolated from 4- to 6-month-old PRRSV-free herd gilts (n = 7 pigs). On the apical side, four

Cytomegalovirus infection initiates inflammatory bowel disease by activating a positive MyD88/NF-κB feedback loop in allogeneic skin transplantation mice.

Infection with the cytomegalovirus (CMV) is common. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. CMV infection is involved in IBD pathogenesis. The abnormal activation of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, which results in inflammatory cytokine overexpression, is an important factor in IBD pathogenesis. The present study aimed to examine the effect of CMV infection on NF-κB activation and its role in IBD pathogenesis. Since BALB/c rather than C57BL/6 mice belong to the murine CMV (MCMV

The first study on clinicopathological changes in cats with feline infectious peritonitis with and without retrovirus coinfection.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an infectious, immune-mediated, and fatal disease in cats caused by a mutant feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are two common retroviruses that play a role in reducing feline immune function with opportunistic retrovirus infection being a predisposing factor for the development of FIP. This study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological parameters of FIP in cats with and without retrovirus coinfection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 62 cats presenting with pleu
