A MEG compatible, interactive IR game paradigm for the study of visuomotor reach-to-target movements in young children and clinical populations: The Target-Touch Motor Task.

BACKGROUND: The conventional focus on discrete finger movements (i.e., index finger flexion or button-box key presses) has been an effective method to study neuromotor control using magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, this approach is challenging for young children and not possible for some people with physical disability. NEW METHOD: We have developed a novel, interactive MEG compatible reach-to-target task to investigate neuromotor function, specifically for use with young children. We used an infrared touch-screen frame to detect responses to targets presented using custom software. The

International consensus on a standard set of outcome measures for child and youth anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A major barrier to improving care effectiveness for mental health is a lack of consensus on outcomes measurement. The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) has already developed a consensus-based standard set of outcomes for anxiety and depression in adults (including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale, and the WHO Disability Schedule). This Position Paper reports on recommendations specifically for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder in children and young people aged be

Arteritis and Large Vessel Occlusive Strokes in Children After COVID-19 Infection.

We describe 2 previously healthy children who suffered disabling arterial ischemic strokes because of acute intracranial large vessel occlusion within 3 to 4 weeks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Both children presented from communities with high COVID-19 case rates in the Southwest United States. An 8-year-old American Indian girl experienced severe iron deficiency anemia requiring blood transfusion and presented with bilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) distribution strokes 3 weeks later. She underwent emergent mechanical thrombectomy of the left MCA with successful clot

Relationship Between Esophageal Abnormalities on Fluoroscopic Esophagram and Pulmonary Function Testing in Juvenile Systemic Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a disabling autoimmune condition that affects multiple organs in addition to skin, notably the gastrointestinal and pulmonary systems. The relationship between esophageal abnormalities and pulmonary disease in juvenile SSc is not well understood. We describe associations between radiologic esophageal abnormalities and pulmonary function. METHODS: Clinical and radiographic data of children ages >18 years who fulfilled the 2007 Pediatric Rheumatology Provisional Classification Criteria for juvenile SSc between 1994 and 2016 were reviewed. Fluorosc

Treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a revolution in care.

A generation ago, children with arthritis faced a lifetime of pain and disability. Today, there are a multitude of treatment options, including a variety of biologics targeting key cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. While non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids were once the mainstay of therapy, they are now largely used as bridge or adjunctive therapies. Among the conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, methotrexate remains first-line therapy for most children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) due to its long track record of safety and effectiven

Precursors of developmental dyslexia: an overview of the longitudinal Dutch Dyslexia Programme study.

Converging evidence suggests that developmental dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder, characterized by deficits in the auditory, visual, and linguistic domains. In the longitudinal project of the Dutch Dyslexia Programme, 180 children with a familial risk of dyslexia (FR) and a comparison group of 120 children without FR (noFR) were followed from the age of 2 months up to 9 years. Children were assessed on (1) auditory, speech, and visual event-related potentials every half year between 2 and 41 months; (2) expressive and receptive language, motor development, behaviour problems, and home-li

Follow-up of newborns treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a nationwide evaluation at 5 years of age.

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a supportive cardiopulmonary bypass technique for babies with acute reversible cardiorespiratory failure. We assessed morbidity in ECMO survivors at the age of five years, when they start primary school and major decisions for their school careers must be made. METHODS: Five-year-old neonatal venoarterial-ECMO survivors from the two designated ECMO centres in The Netherlands (Erasmus MC--Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam, and University Medical Center Nijmegen) were assessed within the framework of an extensive follow-up progra

Why would you remove half a brain? The outcome of 58 children after hemispherectomy-the Johns Hopkins experience: 1968 to 1996.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of the 58 hemispherectomies performed at Johns Hopkins between 1968 and January 1996. METHODS: Charts were reviewed of the 58 hemispherectomies performed at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions by the Pediatric Epilepsy Group during the years 1968 to 1996. Twenty-seven operations were done for Rasmussen's syndrome, 24 operations for cortical dysplasias/hemimegalencephalies, and 7 for Sturge-Weber syndrome or other congenital vascular problems. Seizure control alone did not seem to adequately describe the outcomes of the procedure. Therefore, a score was construct

Poisoning-related emergency department visits in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, and its prevalence has increased markedly in the past two decades. Research indicates that people with ASD are at increased risk for premature mortality from injuries. Often, children with ASD are prescribed multiple medications, increasing their risk for intentional and unintentional poisonings. We examined the epidemiologic patterns of emergency department (ED)-treated poisonings in children with ASD and the association of ED-treated poisonings with ASD according to common co-occurring conditions. METHODS:

Serological investigation of vaccine-induced antibodies for measles, rubella, and yellow fever viruses in children vertically exposed to Zika virus or with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination schedules, as well as their effectiveness and contraindications, need to be evaluated regularly, especially in specific situations. Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is a severe condition that results in extensive functional and neurological impairment of fetuses and newborns due to Zika virus tropism for fetal neural progenitor cells. Down Syndrome (DS) is the leading genetic cause of intellectual disability. The immune impairment in DS has already been described, but little is known about the immune response of CZS children. Thus, CZS and DS are specific conditions that

Establishing an algorithm for molecular genetic diagnostics in Chinese children with brachydactyly type E.

BACKGROUND: Brachydactyly type E (BDE) is characterized by variable shortening of metacarpals or metatarsals, often involving phalanges. It may occur as an isolated anomaly or as part of congenital syndromes. With advancements in molecular diagnostic technologies, how genetic testing enhances the precise diagnosis of BDE remains unclear. Our aims were to establish an algorithm for molecular genetic diagnostics in Chinese children with BDE and to explore the phenotype-genotype correlations of Chinese patients with BDE. METHODS: We reviewed left-hand wrist X-rays from children visiting Children

Investigating social orienting in children with Phelan-McDermid syndrome and 'idiopathic' autism.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by developmental delay/intellectual disability, absent or delayed speech, physical dysmorphic features and high rates of autistic features. However, it is currently unknown whether people with PMS have similar neurocognitive atypicalities to those previously identified in idiopathic autism. Disruption in social orienting has previously been suggested as an early hallmark feature of idiopathic autism that impacts social learning and social interaction. METHODS: This study used a semi-naturalistic task to explor
