PURPOSE: Pulmonary parenchyma saving method (cystotomy and enucleation) has been globally accepted in lung hydatidosis. However, whether capitonnage is performed or not after cystotomy is still controversial. This study aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 12 pediatric patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts. These 12 patients (10 males and 2 females), with an average age of 8.7 years, underwent cystotomy without capitonnage. The mean follow-up period was 36 months.

Surgical procedure is still used as the first choice in the treatment of pulmonary hydatid cysts. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has started to be performed as a minimally invasive surgical option in recent years for lung hydatid cyst; however, few cases have been reported in the literature, especially in children. Thoracoscopic surgery experience is limited in pulmonary hydatid cyst for both adults and children. We present a pediatric case of giant lung hydatid cyst, in which we performed partial capitonnage with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and fibrin glue.

A survey on human cystic echinococcosis was carried out in two public health establishments including the state hospital and one private medical clinic in Djelfa province (Algeria) to report the epidemiological profile of surgical cases and to examine the fertility of collected cysts. Total 18 hydatid cysts from 11 patients of different ages living both in rural and urban areas were obtained. Liver localization was noted in 73% of cases compared to lung localization (27%). Microscopic examination showed a fertility rate of 94.45% against 5.55% of sterile cysts.

BACKGROUND: Lung hydatidosis (LH) is still an endemic pathology. Different published surgical series have reported variable numbers of patients, but few have studied the morbidity- and mortality-associated risk factors.
METHODS: Through a retrospective with a descriptive and analytical aim study, performed from January 1987 to December 2020, we reported all patients who underwent operations for LH, regardless of the cyst locations, numbers, and aspects. We excluded patients who were not operated on, patients with extrapulmonary hydatidosis, and those with a cystic pathology other than LH.
