OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) after 20 weeks' gestation.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted of all deliveries at three North Carolina hospitals between 1990 and 1993. A total of 7403 deliveries remained after exclusions (pre-pregnancy diabetes, HIV-positive, structural urologic abnormalities, no prenatal care) and restrictions (black or white race, county of residence). Recent evidence suggests that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) enhance the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1. In 143 HIV-infected women enrolled in a university-based longitudinal HIV clinic over 16 months (mean), the STD point prevalence was examined at enrollment and the cumulative prevalence was calculated at follow-up. At enrollment, 35 women (25%) had > or = 1 STD. These included trichomoniasis in 16 women (11%); syphilis, 9 (6%); genital herpes, 8 (6%); gonorrhea, 5 (4%); chlamydia, 5 (4%); genital warts, 2 (1%); and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), 1 (1%).

A cross-sectional study of 306 women was done to correlate antibody to the chlamydial hsp60 (Chsp60) with epidemiologic, serologic, and laparoscopic findings of women with and without pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The aim of this study was to compare culture and polymerase chain reaction techniques in detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in clinical specimens. Two hundred clinical specimens previously examined for C. trachomatis by culture were analysed blindly by polymerase chain reaction. A 144 bp fragment of DNA from the MOMP of C. trachomatis was amplified. In addition, a 250 bp segment of beta-globin gene was amplified as an internal control. Trachoma control necessitates identification of individuals shedding ocular chlamydiae. Conventional techniques of chlamydial culture are unsuitable for large field surveys in developing countries. In this study an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) developed for the detection of chlamydial antigen in genital-tract infection was used in trachoma. Epitheliocystis is an emerging and global aquaculture disease caused by a diverse range of bacteria of the order Chlamydiales. Here we report a case of epitheliocystis caused by a novel Chlamydia bacterium, which resulted in 40% mortality in cultured cyprinids (Spinibarbus denticulatus).
