Automated analysis of facial emotions in subjects with cognitive impairment.

Differences in expressing facial emotions are broadly observed in people with cognitive impairment. However, these differences have been difficult to objectively quantify and systematically evaluate among people with cognitive impairment across disease etiologies and severity. Therefore, a computer vision-based deep learning model for facial emotion recognition trained on 400.000 faces was utilized to analyze facial emotions expressed during a passive viewing memory test. In addition, this study was conducted on a large number of individuals (n = 493), including healthy controls and individual…

Cognitive assessment in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 2.

Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2) is an autosomal dominant multisystemic disorder. Previous studies conducted on small cohorts of DM2 patients indicated presence of a cognitive dysfunction. We aimed to assess cognitive functions in a larger cohort of Serbian DM2 patients using an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests. The study included 76 patients with a genetically confirmed DM2, 68 of whom had all tests for different cognitive domains performed. Patients underwent clinical and neuropsychological testing, including cognitive screening and assessment of general intellectual level, atten

Enhancing Clinical Visibility of Hearing Loss in Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the largest potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia and is highly prevalent among older adults, yet it goes largely unreported, unidentified, and untreated, at great cost to health and quality of life. Hearing screening is a proven cost-effective solution to overcome delays in its identification and management yet is not typically recommended by physicians for older adults. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility and value of hearing screening for older adults at risk for dementia in order to enhance physicians' awareness of hearing loss and improve acces

The Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in the Management of Tinnitus.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been suggested as an effective modality in reducing the effects of tinnitus and improving quality of life. This article aimed to compare the effectiveness of MBCT with that of standard treatment in the management of tinnitus in Thai patients. All participants were voluntarily divided into experimental MBCT and control groups depending on their availability. In addition to educational sessions and standard treatment, the MBCT group completed four weekly 120-minute sessions of mindfulness practicing skills. The Thai version of the Tinnitus Handicap

Characterization of cognitive impairment in adult polyglucosan body disease.

Adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD) is a rare but probably underdiagnosed autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder due to pathogenic variants in GBE1. The phenotype is characterized by neurogenic bladder dysfunction, spastic paraplegia, and axonal neuropathy. Additionally, cognitive symptoms and dementia have been reported in APBD but have not been studied systematically. Using exome sequencing, we identified two previously unreported bi-allelic missense GBE1 variants in a patient with severe memory impairment along with the typical non-cognitive symptoms. We were able to confirm a re

From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Mindfulness-Based Interventions.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicates that 83% of individuals released from state prisons in 2005 were arrested at least once during a 9-year follow-up period. With only 17% of released individuals not rearrested, it could be argued that correctional facilities fail to provide the necessary resources that individuals need for proper rehabilitation and reintegration. Thus, there is a need for alternative jail and prison programming. This article reviews the leading program, cognitive behavioral therapy, and advocates for the integration and use of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in ca

Electrophysiology reveals cognitive-linguistic alterations after concussion.

Language deficits and alterations to the N400 ERP are commonly reported in aphasia and moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but have seldomly been investigated after mild TBI, such as concussion. In the present study, the N400 was recorded from young adults within 1-month after concussion and matched controls during a sentence processing task. The N400 recorded to semantically incongruent sentence-final words was significantly more negative and with a more anterior distribution in the concussion group than control group. Among the concussion group, a weaker N400 was associated with

[Arachnoid cysts can be associated with cognitive and affective symptoms].

Arachnoid cysts are frequent incidental findings on brain scans. Traditionally, they are regarded as harmless, congenital structures which do not require surgical treatment. In the rare cases where surgery is indicated it can be due to haemorrhage, hydrocephalus or cranial nerve affection caused by the cyst. However, recent literature suggests a correlation between arachnoid cysts and cognitive and affective symptoms. The hypothesised pathomechanisms include pressure, affected neuronal or glial metabolism and inflammation. If this is correct a more active approach might benefit the patients as

Hypertension and Cognitive Impairment: A Review of Mechanisms and Key Concepts.

Cognitive impairment, and dementia, are major contributors to global burden of death and disability, with projected increases in prevalence in all regions of the world, but most marked increases in low and middle-income countries. Hypertension is a risk factor for both Vascular Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's disease, the two most common causes of dementia, collectively accounting for 85% of cases. Key end-organ pathological mechanisms, for which hypertension is proposed to be causative, include acute and covert cerebral ischemia and hemorrhage, accelerated brain atrophy, cerebral microva

Prevalence of, and risk factors for, cognitive impairment in lacunar stroke.

BACKGROUND: Small vessel disease (SVD) is associated with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) but why VCI occurs in some, but not other patients, is uncertain. We determined the prevalence of, and risk factors for, VCI in a large cohort of patients with lacunar stroke. METHODS: Participants with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed lacunar stroke were recruited in the multicenter DNA Lacunar 2 study and compared with healthy controls. A logistic regression model was used to determine which vascular risk factors and MRI parameters were independent predictors of VCI, assessed using the Br
