Immunotherapy in selected patients with Down syndrome disintegrative disorder.

Down syndrome disintegrative disorder (DSDD) is an increasingly identified condition characterized by cognitive decline, autistic characteristics, insomnia, catatonia, and psychosis in adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome. Previously we reported a higher rate of autoimmune thyroid disease in these patients compared with unaffected individuals with Down syndrome. We therefore hypothesized DSDD may in some cases be immune-mediated. Here we report four cases of DSDD treated with immunotherapy. Families were interviewed retrospectively for symptoms of cognitive decline, autism, catatoni

Body focused repetitive behavior disorders: Significance of family history.

BACKGROUND: The significance of family history in body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBs) (i.e. trichotillomania and skin picking) has received scant research attention. We sought to understand the clinical and cognitive impact of having a first-degree relative with a BFRB or a substance use disorder (SUD). METHODS: 265 participants with BFRBs undertook clinical and neurocognitive evaluations. Those with a first-degree relative with a BFRB or an SUD were compared to those without on a number of clinical and cognitive measures. RESULTS: 77 (29.1%) participants had a first-degree fa

Irrational beliefs, biases and gambling: exploring the role of animal models in elucidating vulnerabilities for the development of pathological gambling.

Gambling is a heterogeneous and complex disorder. Multiple factors may lead to problem gambling, yet one of the most important appears to be the increased presence of cognitive biases or distortions. These biases are thought to precipitate gambling as they can lead to dysfunctional decision making under risk or ambiguity. Modelling these cognitive perturbations in animals can improve our understanding of their neurobiological bases, and potentially stimulate novel treatment options. The first aim of this review is to give a broad overview of some of the cognitive biases that are most commonly

Affect regulation: a systems neuroscience perspective.

OBJECTIVE: TO INTEGRATE: (1) the neuroanatomical model of affect regulation; (2) a functional model of affect regulation; and (3) the evolving picture of affect dysregulation as exemplified by bipolar disorder. METHODOLOGY: A computerized search for articles on related topics was augmented by additional selected studies. RESULTS: Subdivision between the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is defined by distinct cytoarchitecture, corticocortical and subcortical connectivity, and function. The hierarchical relationship between OFC and amygdala is not resolved.

The catastrophic misinterpretation of physiological distress.

Cognitive theories of panic disorder suggest that the catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations is the trigger for a panic attack. A challenge to cognitive theories is the suggestion that dyspnea (shortness of breath) is central to the development of panic and that negative cognitions are by-products of panic. To examine these seemingly contradictory theoretical perspectives, the present study investigated panic symptomatology in a sample of patients with chronic shortness of breath (i.e. pulmonary patients). Past studies have shown an increased prevalence of panic in pulmonary patie

Bidirectional associations between mental health conditions and cognitive impairment in patients with pain conditions of the back, neck, and spine: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Pain conditions (PCs) of the back, neck, and spine are frequently accompanied by psychiatric and cognitive comorbidities in older adults. However, the directionality and magnitude of the associations between psychiatric disorders and cognitive impairment in this population remain insufficiently characterized. OBJECTIVE: This population-based study examines the bidirectional relationship between Mental Health Conditions (MHCs) and Cognitive Impairment (CI) among patients with back, neck, and spine pain. It assesses whether MHCs-including depression, Bipolar Disorder (BD), Generaliz

[Transcranial electrostimulation as part of combination therapy for mental disorders].

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is often used in clinical practice as an adjunct to other treatments. However, it is still unclear how the combination of different methods affects the overall effectiveness of therapy and how effective tES is compared to other therapeutic approaches. A search and systematic review of studies according to the PRISMA criteria were conducted in the PubMed database up to April 4, 2025. At the primary search stage, the following articles were included: articles on the treatment of mental disorders using various types of tES as part of combination therapy o

Comparison of CogMate™ and the Mini-Mental State Examination: A New Tool for Assessing the Cognitive Function of Community-Dwelling Older People.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive decline causes disability and dependence in older people, affecting the individuals, families, and society. This study aimed to use a gamified smart test, the CogMate™ assessment, to measure the cognitive function of community-dwelling older people and compare the test with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). METHODS: We recruited 150 older people for testing with two cognitive assessment tools, the MMSE and CogMate™. After completing data collection, we conducted descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. RESULTS: The MMSE results showed that only 38% (n

[Results of the evaluation of cognitive functions in acute haemorrhagic stroke].

The prevalence of neurocognitive impairment subsequent to haemorrhagic stroke is notably high, thus constituting a significant predictor of survival and functionality. To date, however, there has been a paucity of studies that have described the profile of specific cognitive impairments in patients suffering from haemorrhagic strokes. The objective of the present study is twofold: firstly, to analyse in detail cognitive impairment after haemorrhagic stroke; secondly, to investigate the improvement in cognitive function and to determine its association with potential prognostic factors. The present

(R)-ketamine restores anterior insular cortex activity and cognitive deficits in social isolation-reared mice.

Chronic social isolation increases the risk of mental health problems, including cognitive impairments and depression. While subanesthetic ketamine is considered effective for cognitive impairments in patients with depression, the neural mechanisms underlying its effects are not well understood. Here we identified unique activation of the anterior insular cortex (aIC) as a characteristic feature in brain-wide regions of mice reared in social isolation and treated with (R)-ketamine, a ketamine enantiomer. Using fiber photometry recording on freely moving mice, we found that social isolation att

Effect of cognitive bias modification-memory on depressive symptoms and autobiographical memory bias: two independent studies in high-ruminating and dysphoric samples.

Memory bias is a risk factor for depression. In two independent studies, the efficacy of one CBM-Memory session on negative memory bias and depressive symptoms was tested in vulnerable samples. We compared positive to neutral (control) CBM-Memory trainings in highly-ruminating individuals (N = 101) and individuals with elevated depressive symptoms (N = 100). In both studies, participants studied positive, neutral, and negative Swahili words paired with their translations. In five study-test blocks, they were then prompted to retrieve either only the positive or neutral translations. Immediatel

Cognitive flexibility, impulsivity, and compulsivity in problematic consumption behaviours.

Different studies have identified cognitive inflexibility, impulsivity and compulsivity in substance use and gambling disorder, but it is unclear whether these deficits are present in other possible addictive behaviours. In this study, we evaluated cognitive inflexibility, as measured by the Probabilistic Reversal Learning Task (PRLT), impulsivity across UPPS-P model and the compulsivity in regular gamblers, buyers, video gamers, consumers of pornography and control group. Multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the five groups, revealing higher scores across several impulsivity and co

Regulatory impact of intermittent fasting on autophagy in high fat diet induced structural and cognitive brain deteriorations in rats.

Obesity-induced cognitive decline has been linked to alterations in brain autophagy. However, research concerning the high-fat diet (HFD) impacts on the brain still lacks evidence, and results are controversial. Intermittent fasting (IF) may lead to increased neurogenesis levels in the hippocampus in neurodegenerative diseases; however, the involved molecular mechanisms are not well understood. The current work aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of IF against obese rat model-related cognitive disorders that disrupted brain autophagy. 24 male rats were allocated to control, fasting le

Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on Cognition: An Analysis of Electroencephalography Microstates and Alpha Peak Frequency.

BACKGROUND: Respiration-related sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are risk factors for mild cognitive impairment and age-related neurocognitive deficits. Nearly 60% of patients with OSA suffer from a variety of impaired cognitive functions, including attention, working memory, and episodic memory, and are susceptible to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. However, it remains largely unexplored regarding the features of the electroencephalography (EEG) microstates of these patients and the potential association between the EEG microstates and the cognitive impairm

[Research advances in mitochondrial dysfunction-mediated sepsis-associated encephalopathy].

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is one of the complications of sepsis, causes cognitive dysfunction ranging from mild attention deficits to progression into coma, which severely impairs patients' ability to live and mental health, and increases the long-term disability and mortality rates. Although the clinical attention to SAE has been increasing in recent years, effective interventions to improve cognitive dysfunction in sepsis survivors are still in the preclinical stage. The pathogenesis of SAE is numerous and complex, and mitochondrial dysfunction, as one of the key pathogenic mech

Neuropsychological functioning of homeless people in Paris: An exploratory study.

Homelessness is a multifactorial issue, influenced by structural and individual factors. These factors include health status, which has been reported to be poorer among people experiencing homelessness. Although the somatic and mental health of homeless individuals has already been studied in France, to our knowledge, no research has been conducted on neuropsychological functioning in this country. Studies out with France have identified cognitive impairments as highly prevalent among homeless people, and these impairments are likely affected by local structural factors, such as healthcare acc

Evaluation of the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation in the treatment of cognitive symptomatology in the early stages of psychosis: study protocol for a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are core symptoms of schizophrenia that occur from the early stages of the disorder. There is reliable evidence that cognitive deficits are associated with outcomes in schizophrenia; thus, early treatment could be particularly important. Studies with different neuromodulation techniques involving subjects with schizophrenia suggest that application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with inhibitory stimulation over the left temporo-parietal cortex and excitatory stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex could ameliorate positive, neg
