Environmental enrichment enhances the antidepressant effect of ketamine and ameliorates spatial memory deficits in adult rats.

Ketamine is a rapid-acting antidepressant associated with various cognitive side effects. To mitigate these side effects while enhancing efficacy, it can be co-administered with other antidepressants. In our study, we adopted a similar strategy by combining ketamine with environmental enrichment, a potent sensory-motor paradigm, in adult male Wistar rats. We divided the animals into four groups based on a combination of housing conditions and ketamine versus vehicle injections. The groups included those housed in standard cages or an enriched environment for 50 days, which encompassed a 13-day

Enhanced osteoblastic differentiation of parietal bone in a novel murine model of mucopolysaccharidosis type II.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II, OMIM 309900) is an X-linked disorder caused by a deficiency of lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS). The clinical manifestations of MPS II involve cognitive decline, bone deformity, and visceral disorders. These manifestations are closely associated with IDS enzyme activity, which catalyzes the stepwise degradation of heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate. In this study, we established a novel Ids-deficient mice and further assessed the enzyme's physiological role. Using DNA sequencing, we found a genomic modification of the Ids genome, which invol

CSF peptides from VGF and other markers enhance prediction of MCI to AD progression using the ATN framework.

The amyloid beta, tau, neurodegenerative markers framework has been proposed to serve as a system to classify and combine biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Although cerebrospinal (CSF) fluid AT (amyloid beta and tau)-based biomarkers have a well-established track record to distinguish AD from control subjects and to predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD, there is not an established non-tau based neurodegenerative ("N") marker from CSF. Here, we examine the ability of several candidate peptides in the CSF to serve as "N" markers to both classify disease state and

Meditation and Aerobic Exercise Enhance Mental Health Outcomes and Pattern Separation Learning Without Changing Heart Rate Variability in Women with HIV.

Mental and physical (MAP) training targets the brain and the body through a combination of focused-attention meditation and aerobic exercise. The following feasibility pilot study tested whether 6 weeks of MAP training improves mental health outcomes, while enhancing discrimination learning and heart rate variability (HRV) in a group of women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other stress-related conditions. Participants were assigned to training (n = 18) or no-training control (n = 8) groups depending on their ability and willingness to participate, and if their schedule allo

Enhanced positive emotional reactivity in frontotemporal dementia reflects left-lateralized atrophy in the temporal and frontal lobes.

In frontotemporal dementia (FTD), left-lateralized atrophy patterns have been associated with elevations in certain positive emotions. Here, we investigated whether positive emotional reactivity was enhanced in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), an FTD syndrome that targets the left anterior temporal lobe. Sixty-one participants (16 people with svPPA, 24 people with behavioral variant FTD, and 21 healthy controls) viewed six 90-sec trials that were comprised of a series of photographs; each trial was designed to elicit a specific positive emotion, negative emotion, or no emo

Polarity and subfield specific effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on hippocampal plasticity.

An increasing number of studies using human subjects substantiate the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a noninvasive approach to treat various neurological symptoms. tDCS has been tested in conditions from motor to cognition dysfunctions. Performance enhancement of healthy subjects using tDCS has also been explored. The underlying physiological mechanism for tDCS effects is hypothesized to be through changes in neuroplasticity and we have previously demonstrated that in vivo anodal tDCS can enhance neuroplasticity of hippocampal CA1 neurons. The purpose of this study wa

Neural Correlates of Enhanced Audiovisual Processing in the Bilingual Brain.

Bilingualism is associated with enhancements in perceptual and cognitive processing necessary for juggling multiple languages. Recent psychophysical studies demonstrate bilinguals also show enhanced multisensory processing and more restricted temporal binding windows for integrating audiovisual information. Here, we probed the neural mechanisms of bilinguals' audiovisual benefits. We recorded neuroelectric responses in mono- and bi-lingual listeners to the double-flash paradigm in which auditory beeps concurrent with a single visual flash induces the perceptual illusion of multiple flashes. Remote limb ischemic conditioning enhances motor learning in healthy humans.

Brief bouts of sublethal ischemia have been shown to protect exposed tissue (ischemic conditioning) and tissues at remote sites (remote ischemic conditioning) against subsequent ischemic challenges. Given that the mechanisms of this protective phenomenon are multifactorial and epigenetic, we postulated that remote limb ischemic conditioning (RLIC) might enhance mechanisms responsible for neural plasticity, and thereby facilitate learning. Specifically, we hypothesized that conditioning of the nervous system with RLIC, achieved through brief repetitive limb ischemia prior to training, would fac

Histone deactylase inhibition combined with behavioral therapy enhances learning and memory following traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a number of pathological events ranging from neuronal degeneration and tissue loss to impaired neuronal plasticity and neurochemical dysregulation. In rodents, exposure of brain-injured animals to environmental enrichment has been shown to be an effective means of enhancing learning and memory post-injury. Recently, it has been discovered that environmental enrichment may enhance neuronal plasticity through epigenetic changes that involve enhanced histone acetylation, a property that can be mimicked by the use of histone deactylase (HDAC) inhibitors. We the

Forearm EMG response activity during motor performance in individuals prone to increased stress reactivity.

BACKGROUND: Work-related Upper Extremity Disorders (WRUEDs) are conceived of as a multifactorial syndrome caused by the effects of excessive repetitive motions, sustained static postures, and muscular stiffness. Our aim is to test an etiological model derived from a theory by Van Galen and Van Huygevoort [2000] Biol Psychol 51:151-171. The theory holds that physical, emotional, and psychosocial stressors enhance muscular stiffness as a compensatory filtering of impoverished signal-to-noise ratios in the motor system. High individual levels of arousal, as measured by Spielberger et al. [1970],

The Regional Vulnerability Index (RVI) as a Neuroimaging-Based Biomarker for Autism: Associations with Likelihood, Cognition, and Longitudinal Social Outcomes.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with symptoms spanning cognitive, social and behavioral domains and leading to lifelong challenges. Autism is heritable but specific genetic and environmental factors that shape its early neurodevelopmental trajectory remain unknown. Despite the clinical variability, neuroimaging findings from Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis (ENIGMA)-ASD consortium identified stable and replicable patterns of cortical and subcortical differences that were consistent with those reported by an independent consortium,

[Progress on prognostic assessment methods for mild cognitive impairment].

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a key prodromal stage of dementia, requires precise prognostic assessment to delay disease progression. Given the high heterogeneity of MCI, any single indicator has limited predictive efficacy. Different clinical subtypes of MCI, such as amnestic MCI, non-amnestic MCI, and subjective cognitive decline, exhibit fundamental differences in pathological mechanisms and outcomes, forming the basis for stratified prognostic assessment. Abnormal sleep duration, physical functional decline, and psychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety, apathy) are indicative of cognit

Microglial FKBP51 drives immunometabolic dysfunction linking perioperative neurocognitive disorders and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are both important aging related cognitive disorders. Accumulating evidence suggests that they share common pathological mechanisms involving Aβ deposition, neuroinflammation, and immunometabolic imbalance. However, the key regulatory molecules linking these two conditions remain unclear. FKBP prolyl isomerase 51 (FKBP51) is an immune regulatory molecule widely involved in inflammation control and metabolic homeostasis maintenance, but its role in PND and AD is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate w

Neuroprotective Effects of Sodium Nitroprusside on CKD-Induced Cognitive Dysfunction in Rats: Role of CBS and Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a conceivable new risk factor for cognitive disorder and dementia. Uremic toxicity, oxidative stress, and peripheral-central inflammation have been considered important mediators of CKD-induced nervous disorders. Nitric oxide (NO) is a retrograde neurotransmitter in synapses, and has vital roles in intracellular signaling in neurons. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of NO in CKD-induced cognitive deficits by considering the nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/ heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway and the important role

(160) SCHEMA THERAPY: NOVEL THERAPEUTIC PROSPECTS FOR COMPULSIVE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR DISORDER

Abstract Introduction The World Health Organization included compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). This condition is characterized by the failure to control sexual impulses, often involving intense, repetitive behavior. The diagnostic guidelines of the ICD-11 include sexual activity as the central component of the life of the affected individual, with the neglect of other aspects of life, failure to interrupt repetitive sexual behavior and the maintenance of sexual behaviors despite negative consequences for the

Applications of artificial intelligence to aid early detection of dementia: A scoping review on current capabilities and future directions.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: With populations aging, the number of people with dementia worldwide is expected to triple to 152 million by 2050. Seventy percent of cases are due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and there is a 10-20 year 'pre-clinical' period before significant cognitive decline occurs. We urgently need, cost effective, objective biomarkers to detect AD, and other dementias, at an early stage. Risk factor modification could prevent 40% of cases and drug trials would have greater chances of success if participants are recruited at an earlier stage. Currently, detection of dementi

Cogmed Training Does Not Generalize to Real-World Benefits for Adult Hearing Aid Users: Results of a Blinded, Active-Controlled Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Performance on working memory tasks is positively associated with speech-in-noise perception performance, particularly where auditory inputs are degraded. It is suggested that interventions designed to improve working memory capacity may improve domain-general working memory performance for people with hearing loss, to benefit their real-world listening. We examined whether a 5-week training program that primarily targets the storage component of working memory (Cogmed RM, adaptive) could improve cognition, speech-in-noise perception and self-reported hearing in a randomized contro
