Point Prevalence Survey of Antimicrobial Use and Resistance during the COVID-19 Era among Hospitals in Saudi Arabia and the Implications.

The inappropriate prescribing of antimicrobials increases antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which poses an appreciable threat to public health, increasing morbidity and mortality. Inappropriate antimicrobial prescribing includes their prescribing in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, despite limited evidence of bacterial infections or coinfections. Knowledge of current antimicrobial utilization in Saudi Arabia is currently limited. Consequently, the objective of this study was to document current antimicrobial prescribing patterns among Saudi hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study

Mucormycosis and Its Upsurge During COVID-19 Epidemic: An Updated Review.

Although mucormycosis may have reached an epidemic situation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the term was much more familiar even before the COVID-19 period. The year 2020 showed an outbreak of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) which affected millions of people all over the world. One of the noticeable complications observed to be associated with this disease is mucormycosis. It is an opportunistic infection caused by members of the Order Mucorales existing worldwide and has been commonly reported as a laboratory contaminant for a long time. However, nowadays due to the changes in the host environm

Antibiotic Utilization in Hospitalized Children with Bronchiolitis: A Prospective Study Investigating Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics at a Secondary Hospital in Madrid (2004-2022).

Bronchiolitis is a viral respiratory infection, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being the most frequent agent, requiring hospitalization in 1% of affected children. However, there continues to be a noteworthy incidence of antibiotic prescription in this setting, further exacerbating the global issue of antibiotic resistance. This study, conducted at Severo Ochoa Hospital in Madrid, Spain, focused on antibiotic usage in children under 2 years of age who were hospitalized for bronchiolitis between 2004 and 2022. In that time, 5438 children were admitted with acute respiratory infection, a

Continued dominance of dengue virus serotype 2 during the recent Central India outbreaks (2019-2021) with evidence of genetic divergence.

Central India faced major dengue outbreaks in 2019 and 2021. In the present study, we aimed to identify the dengue virus serotypes and genotypes circulating in Central India during the COVID pre-pandemic year (2019) and ongoing-pandemic year (2021). For this purpose, the suspected cases were first tested by serological assays. Sero-positive samples were then subjected to molecular diagnosis by RT-PCR and semi-nested PCR. The serotypes obtained were confirmed by nucleotide sequencing. A phylogenetic analysis of serotypes was performed to identify the circulating genotypes. All four DENV serotyp

Prevalence of multiple human papillomavirus infections and association with cervical lesions among outpatients in Fujian, China: A cross-sectional study.

Multiple human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are common, but their impact on cervical lesions remains controversial. A total of 6225 female patients who underwent colposcopies/conization following abnormal cervical cancer screening results were included in the study. The final pathological diagnosis was determined by the most severe pathological grade among the cervical biopsy, endocervical curettage, and conization. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association between multiple HPV infections and cervical lesions, adjusting for age, HPV ge

Integrated hepatitis B virus DNA maintains surface antigen production during antiviral treatment.

The focus of hepatitis B functional cure, defined as sustained loss of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBV DNA from blood, is on eliminating or silencing the intranuclear template for HBV replication, covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). However, HBsAg also derives from HBV DNA integrated into the host genome (iDNA). Little is known about the contribution of iDNA to circulating HBsAg with current therapeutics. We applied a multiplex droplet digital PCR assay to demonstrate that iDNA is responsible for maintaining HBsAg quantities in some individuals. Using paired bulk l

HIV infection drives interferon signaling within intestinal SARS-CoV-2 target cells.

SARS-CoV-2 infects epithelial cells of the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract and causes related symptoms. HIV infection impairs gut homeostasis and is associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 fatality. To investigate the potential link between these observations, we analyzed single-cell transcriptional profiles and SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor expression across lymphoid and mucosal human tissue from chronically HIV-infected individuals and uninfected controls. Absorptive gut enterocytes displayed the highest coexpression of SARS-CoV-2 receptors ACE2, TMPRSS2, and TMPRSS4, of which ACE2 expre

Helminth infracommunity in a maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, from the humid Chaco, Argentina.

Parasitism is an important factor in conservation worldwide, especially for endangered species, as it can affect host populations by reducing growth rates, fecundity and affecting nutritional status. The maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus, a near-threatened species, is distributed across different habitats from the south Amazonian forest in Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Most studies on gastrointestinal parasites in wild maned wolves are based on coprological findings, and there is little information about adult parasites and parasite species richness. Therefore, thi

BACKGROUND: Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome secondary to infection is the leading cause of death in burn patients. Bloodstream infection (BSI) and the prognosis of burn patients are negatively correlated. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can detect many potential pathogens and may be more valuable for patients with severe burns. METHODS: We retrospectively explored the utility of mNGS in describing the clinical and microbial characteristics of severely burned patients with BSI. We compared mNGS with blood culture. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (127 blood samples) developed 71 e

Protective Effect of Intestinal Helminthiasis Against Tuberculosis Progression Is Abrogated by Intermittent Food Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major challenge for humankind. Because regions with the highest incidence also have a high prevalence of helminthiasis and nutritional scarcity, we wanted to understand the impact of these on TB progression. METHODS: We have developed an experimental murine model for active TB in C3HeB/FeJ, coinfected with Trichuris muris and Heligmosomoides polygyrus nematodes, and exposed to an environmental mycobacterium (M. manresensis) and intermittent fasting. Cause-effect relationships among these factors were explored with Partial Least Squares Path modelling (

Descriptive modification of inflammatory markers in HIV patients after cART initiation according to gender, smoking habit, CMV infection, BMI and serum lipids.

Persistent inflammation, despite anti-retroviral therapy (ART), is an independent predictor of mortality and comorbidities in HIV infection. Multiple factors, including lifestyle and chronic viral coinfections, may contribute. Several of these factors are also associated with a chronic inflammation in the general population. Little is known about the degree to which these factors influence inflammation in HIV infection, particularly within the first year of ART. The purpose of this study was to distinguish the effects of factors (gender, body mass index, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, sm

Communicable and noncommunicable liver disease in HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to highlight the profound changes in the cause in chronic liver disease in HIV-infected individuals. RECENT FINDINGS: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been transformed into a curable viral infection by highly effective treatments. This has resulted in elimination of chronic hepatitis C in HIV-coinfected individuals at least in resource-rich settings. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has become a chronic infection, which is easily controlled by long-term therapy with HBV polymerase inhibitors. As a result, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has gained clinical i

Assessing the Need for Multiplex and Multifunctional Tick-Borne Disease Test in Routine Clinical Laboratory Samples from Lyme Disease and Febrile Patients with a History of a Tick Bite.

Human polymicrobial infections in tick-borne disease (TBD) patients is an emerging public health theme. However, the requirement for holistic TBD tests in routine clinical laboratories is ambiguous. TICKPLEX® PLUS is a holistic TBD test utilized herein to assess the need for multiplex and multifunctional diagnostic tools in a routine clinical laboratory. The study involved 150 specimens categorized into Lyme disease (LD)-positive (n = 48), LD-negative (n = 30), and febrile patients from whom borrelia serology was requested (n = 72, later "febrile patients") based on reference test results from

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Extrapulmonary TB (EPTB) constitutes about 15%-20% of all TB patients, but accounts for 50% among HIV-coinfected. Confirmation of microbial diagnosis of EPTB is usually challenging.Areas covered: Availability of newer imaging modalities like 18FDG-PET-CT and PET-MRI has facilitated precise anatomical localization of the lesions and mapping the extent of EPTB. The use of image- and endoscopy-guided invasive diagnostic methods has made procurement of tissue/body fluids for diagnostic testing possible. With the
