Seawater desalination and autogenous salinity gradient for full-day electricity generation via an electrochemical system fabricated by all biomass-based materials.

Salinity gradient energy, which exists widely between two solutions with different concentrations, represents a substantial and renewable energy resource. Currently, harvesting the salinity gradient energy is largely confined to river estuaries, which significantly limits its applicability for island communities. To address this challenge, a three-compartment device that couples freshwater production with full-day electricity generation is developed, utilizing a carbonized biomass evaporator and electric double layer capacitive mixing technology. In the device, a Rattan-based solar-driven inte

Decoding (digital) histopathology: The building blocks for computational researchers.

Computational Pathology is a novel discipline at the intersection of pathology and computer science, driven by the recent advances in machine learning and image analysis. Nevertheless, combining the insights from both disciplines remains challenging, particularly due to differences in technical background and language between pathologists and engineers. It is acknowledged that literature translating fundamental pathology concepts for computer scientists remains limited, which further complicates the understanding of the field, especially for those entering the field. In this context, and align

Disparities in Blood Pressure Measurement.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aimed to examine how inaccuracies and inequities in blood pressure (BP) measurement across office, ambulatory, home, and emerging cuffless modalities contribute to disparities in hypertension diagnosis and control, and to identify strategies to improve measurement equity. RECENT FINDINGS: Disparities arise from nonstandardized office technique, inappropriate cuff sizing, limited access to validated home and ambulatory devices, reimbursement and implementation barriers, and underrecognition of masked and nocturnal hypertension in populations at higher risk. Cuffless techn

From bench to bedside: relevant animal models across the migraine attack phases.

Migraine is a debilitating brain disorder for which there remains a considerable therapeutic gap that needs to be addressed in order to develop novel effective treatment options for patients. Preclinical translational models have contributed significantly to migraine research by improving our understanding of migraine pathophysiology as well as identifying and validating new drug targets. In this review, we will summarise key animal models and discuss how commonly used experimental readouts used in these models can be integrated for the investigation of the various phases of a migraine attack.

Classification and molecular mechanisms of gametophytic male sterility in Arabidopsis, rice and maize.

Plant male sterility (MS) is a fundamental model for studying reproductive development, yet a critical but often overlooked distinction exists between sporophytic male sterility (SMS) and gametophytic male sterility (GAMS). Unlike SMS, which is controlled by the sporophyte's genotype, GAMS is uniquely determined by the gametophyte's own genome, leading to subtle phenotypes that are challenging to identify. Here, we systematically classify 59 identified GAMS genes in Arabidopsis, rice, and maize into three functional categories based on their defective phenotypes during pollen development: Poll

Contextualizing key principles to promote a justice-oriented informatics research agenda: proceedings and reflections from an American Medical Informatics Association workshop.

OBJECTIVES: Advancing health through informatics requires attending to justice. Recent policy changes in the United States have introduced significant barriers to promoting justice within informatics due to targeted funding cuts and hostility to science, especially science that prioritizes justice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present five key principles for advancing a justice-oriented informatics agenda, synthesized from our workshop held at the American Medical Informatics Association 2022 Annual Symposium. RESULTS: These principles are: (1) Recognize knowledge and methodologies across commu

Decolonizing addiction treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Confronting Russian narcology and Western retreat.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) face a dual crisis in addiction treatment. On one side, Russian imperial legacies persist through punitive "narcology," now weaponized amid ongoing aggression. On the other, Western retrenchment, marked by abrupt aid suspensions and dwindling harm-reduction budgets, has weakened the evidence-based counterweight that once challenged authoritarian approaches. The result is a convergence of punitive logics that marginalizes people who use drugs, whether through active repression, such as the closure of methadone programs in Crimea, or sudden neglect, such as

Spatial atlas of the human brain vasculature reveals specialized cell ensembles.

The brain vasculature comprises diverse specialized cells that are essential for brain function, yet their spatial organization remains poorly understood. Here, we construct a comprehensive cerebrovascular cell atlas encompassing 314,535 transcriptomes that captures the arteriovenous axis and defines consensus cell states. We then perform spatial transcriptomics to map 1,529,740 cells across the human temporal cortex and hippocampus, uncovering stereotyped micro-communities termed vascular cell ensembles. These ensembles comprise specialized subsets of endothelial cells, mural cells, fibroblas

Spatial transcriptomic atlas of aggressive osteosarcomas reveals shared immune landscape and targetable surface markers.

Osteosarcoma is characterized by extensive inter- and intra-tumoral heterogeneity, contributing to treatment resistance and poor outcomes. Here, we present a comprehensive spatial transcriptomics analysis of osteosarcoma, encompassing primary tumors and local or metastatic relapses across diverse phenotypic subtypes. Despite this heterogeneity, we identify a nine-gene cell surface signature with theranostic potential, validated in independent datasets and shown by immunohistochemistry to be distributed across distinct tumor compartments, supporting multi-targeted therapeutic strategies. Analys

Early prediction of the evolution and prognosis of mild acute pancreatitis through Dual Source-CT and Formal Methods.

Acute Pancreatitis (AP) is a common gastrointestinal disease with variable clinical outcomes, ranging from mild, self-limited cases to severe episodes that can be life-threatening. Early identification of patients at risk of progression from Mild Acute Pancreatitis (MAP) to severe/necrotizing pancreatitis is critical for early intervention, reducing morbidity, and optimizing resource allocation. This study proposes a radiomic classification model aimed at stratifying patients with MAP according to their progression. In contrast to the state-of-the-art, Model Checking is used to address the pro

Biobanking: Possibilities for Wastewater-Based Epidemiology.

The COVID-19 pandemic, spanning from early 2020 to late 2022, posed unprecedented challenges for global public health. However, it also spurred innovative approaches to pandemic management, notably the development of pathogen detection in wastewater. It was successfully demonstrated that wastewater analysis can not only reflect ongoing COVID-19 infections but also serve as an early indicator of disease prevalence within communities. Recognizing the value of longitudinal analyses of various pathogens, we identified the need for wastewater biobanking. This practice allows for the retrospective a

Raise Your Voice: How to Increase the Effectiveness of Resident and Family Councils in Long-Term Care Homes.

The devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the missing voices of families and residents in long-term care (LTC) decision-making and policy processes. Family and resident councils constitute one method of raising these voices, but there is currently a gap in evidence of how to promote the effectiveness of these councils. We conducted five focus groups and two interviews with LTC home leaders, residents, family members, and advocates in British Columbia using a participatory approach integrating knowledge-users throughout the research process. Using a framework analysis, we fou

A Kazakh language Dataset of Lip Movements for Command Recognition.

Lip reading systems determine the content of speech based on the visual tracking of lips of the speaker and therefore serve to offer communicative substitutes when acoustic information is not available in the environment. The training of strong lip reading models requires acquisition of specialised corpora that not only characterise the linguistic variability but also visual articulatory variability. In the given work, we introduce a new visual corpus which is specific to Kazakh lip reading. The corpus contains a collection of 102 nouns taking place most commonly in the Kazakh language with sp

VIRGO2: an enhanced gene catalog of the vaginal microbiome provides insights into its functional and ecology complexity.

Despite the importance of the cervicovaginal microbiome, the mechanisms that govern its composition and drive its impact on host physiology remain poorly understood. With the aim to expand our understanding of the function and ecology of the vaginal microbiome, we present VIRGO2, an enhanced non-redundant gene catalog comprising over 1.7 million well-annotated genes from body-site specific microbes and viruses. Analyses using VIRGO2 reveal insights such as including the identification of previously uncharacterized vaginal bacteria, features of the vaginal mycobiome and phageome, and differenti

Auditing the fairness of the US COVID-19 forecast hub's case prediction models.

The US COVID-19 Forecast Hub, a repository of COVID-19 forecasts from over 50 independent research groups, is used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for their official COVID-19 communications. As such, the Forecast Hub is a critical centralized resource to promote transparent decision making. While the Forecast Hub has provided valuable predictions focused on accuracy, there is an opportunity to evaluate model performance across social determinants such as race and urbanization level that have been known to play a role in the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we carry out
