The detrimental effect of aminohydroxypropylidene bisphosphonate (APD) in otospongiosis.

Two middle-aged female patients with active stapedial otosclerosis and sensorineural hearing loss have been treated with aminohydroxypropylidene bisphosphonate (APD). No effect on the Schwartze sign was observed either during or following therapy. No changes were seen in the audiometric data of the patients during the 1st year. Then, within a few weeks, both patients complained of sudden deterioration of the existing hearing losses in both ears, with an alteration of tinnitus. One patient became totally, bilaterally deaf, while the other retained minimal auditory function in the low frequencie

Computerized tomography and Trotter's syndrome in the diagnosis of maxillofacial pain.

Trotter's syndrome is a clinical triad of unilateral deafness, neuralgia affecting branches of the trigeminal nerve, and defective mobility of the soft palate, which is caused by malignant tumors involving the lateral pharyngeal recess (Rosenmüller's fossa). It is an ominous presentation, which can masquerade as dental or masticatory pain. Computerized tomography (CT) can be used not only to explain the anatomic basis of Trotter's syndrome but also to determine the extent and distribution of the malignant tumor involved. The advantages of CT over conventional radiography are illustrated by a c

Idiopathic sudden progressive hearing loss and round window membrane rupture.

We investigated 24 cases of idiopathic sudden progressive deafness (ISPD) in which worsening of sensorineural hearing loss after initial examination was confirmed by audiometry. Exploratory tympanotomy was performed in 10 of 24 patients, and revealed perilymphatic leak in 4 patients. However, there was a higher incidence and a more severe degree of vertigo and imbalance in the group that was operated on than in the non-operated group. Our study has shown that there was no clear difference in the degree of hearing improvement between the operated group and the conservatively treated group. In b

Auditory disorders following head injury in children.

199 children with blunt head injury were examined. Eighteen fractures of the temporal bone were found, two of which were transverse. In both cases the damaged ear remained completely deaf. Of the 16 longitudinal fracture patients, one was left with a persistent 27 dB conductive hearing loss. In another, surgery revealed fractures of the stapedial crura. Persistent sensorineural hearing loss (greater than or equal to 30 dB) at high frequencies (4 to 8 kHz) was observed in 7% of patients. The results of the audiological tests led to the conclusion that sensorineural hearing loss in association w

[An autopsy case of bilateral cavities in the temporal white matter and the striatum (author's transl)].

A 24-year-old female developed high fever and unconsciousness for several days at the age of 3. She was said to have meningitis. Subsequently her verbal development was markedly retarded so that she was kept at a deaf-and-dumb institute. At the age of 19, she was transfered to the mental hospital because she occasionally became very wild without any reasons. She suddendly died at the age of 24 due to paralytic ileus. Her autopsy showed bilateral cavities in the white matter of the anterior portion of the temporal lobes and the striatum. Microscopically, the tissues around the cavities were nec

Some unusual features of Paget's disease of bone.

The usual features of Paget's disease of bone, e.g. large head, deafness due to involvement of the 8th cranial nerve and bowing of the legs are all well described in text books of medicine. However, some features such as platybasia with neurological deficit, involvement of the 2nd, 5th and 7th cranial nerves, hydrocephalus, dementia, dysphasia, corrugation of the skull, bone pain (with or without associated osteo-arthrosis of hips and knees), heart failure, triradiate deformity of the pelvis have either had an inadequate or no description in books. These features are unusual, but it is importa

Otosclerosis surgery.

Results of otosclerosis surgery using the stapes footplate removal with various types of reconstruction are reported in 456 ears (360 patients). Primary success was obtained in around 95% while 83% retained their improvement over the years. The posterior crus on fascia has become the preferred method because of its stability and relative lack of inner ear complications. Inner ear damage is mostly due to perilymph fistulae, which should be promptly recognized and repaired, since revision after the ear has become deaf does not restore hearing. Some late inner ear losses may be due to reactions t

The phospholipid scramblase PLSCR5 is regulated by POU4F3 and required for hair cell stereocilia homeostasis and auditory functions.

Hearing relies on the structural and functional integrity of cochlear hair cells, particularly their apical F-actin-filled stereocilia. Phospholipid scramblases are important for maintaining membrane asymmetry, but their roles in the stereocilia and auditory functions are not fully understood. Here, we identify Plscr5 as a downstream target of the transcription factor POU4F3 essential for hair cell function, whose mutation causes human DFNA15 deafness. Plscr5 knockout mice exhibit progressive hearing loss due to stereocilia degeneration and hair cell loss. Functional analyses reveal that PLSCR

Global prevalence of the mitochondrial MT-RNR1 A1555G variant in non-syndromic hearing loss: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss (NSHL) significantly affects quality of life and is often associated with the MT-RNR1 A1555G variant. This meta-analysis investigated the global prevalence of the A1555G variant, considering factors such as age of onset and aminoglycoside exposure. A systematic review of 97 studies published between 2000 and the present included 31,013 participants. The overall prevalence of the A1555G variant was 3.37 %, with higher rates in East Asia. Subgroup analysis revealed variant frequencies of 7.24 % in postlingual deafness cases and 1.45 % in prelingual cases.

Pediatric Usher Syndrome Type 2A with Coexisting Rheumatic Heart Disease and Upper Gastro-Intestinal Bleed: A Case Report.

Usher syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa, typically present from birth and later symptoms, including loss of night vision and peripheral vision slowly progressing to blindness. The condition exhibits clinical and genetic diversity and currently lacks the definitive treatment. This report presents a case of a ten-year-old female diagnosed with Usher syndrome type IIA via whole exome sequencing. The delayed onset of visual symptoms often leads to a misdiagnosis to isolated deafness in early years. The e

[Research progress in targeted delivery of inner ear using nanocarriers].

Various inner ear diseases such as sensorineural deafness and Meniere's disease bring about problems such as speech communication disorders and decreased work efficiency, which seriously affect the life quality of patients. Due to the special anatomical structure and blood-labyrinth barrier in the inner ear, the current drug administration methods are often unable to achieve satisfactory results. Nanocarriers are the forefront and hot spot of nanotechnology research. In recent years, a lot of research progress has been made in the field of targeted delivery of the inner ear, which is expected

De novo variants in AGO1 recapitulate a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder phenotype.

AGO1, as one of the rare genes in neurodevelopmental disorders, is involved in the microRNA-induced silencing complex. Here, we describe the clinical and genetic features of 18 individuals with de novo AGO1 variants: four new and 14 previously reported. Three variants are identified: two in-frame deletion variants and one missense variant. The spectrum of AGO1-related disorders included global development delay (GDD), intellectual disability (ID) with or without epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder, hypotonia and dysmorphisms. Focal seizures are the most common type of seizure, occasionally with

Promotion of row 1-specific tip complex condensates by Gpsm2-Gαi provides insights into row identity of the tallest stereocilia.

The mechanosensory stereocilia in hair cells are organized into rows of graded height, a property crucial for auditory perception. Gpsm2-Gαi-Whirlin-Myo15-Eps8 complex at tips of the tallest stereocilia is proposed to define hair bundle row identity, although the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we find that Gpsm2 could undergo phase separation. Moreover, row 1-specific Gpsm2-Gαi complex significantly promotes the formation of the five-component tip complex density (5xTCD) condensates. The 5xTCD condensates display much stronger actin-bundling ability than those without Gpsm2-Gαi, w

Living in a Limited World: Experience of Lipreaders When Society Is Masked.

The goal of the current interpretive phenomenological study grounded in Heidegger's philosophies was to explore the experience of lipreaders when society was masked during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Participants were prelingually deafened English-speaking adults who predominantly relied on lip-reading and speaking for communication. Twelve in-depth email interviews were conducted with respondents recruited via social media. Thematic techniques of Benner were employed, and six themes emerged: Limiting of World Resulting in Negative Emotions, Increased Prominence of Deafness, Balanci
