An important diagnostic muscle biopsy finding in patients with mitochondrial DNA disease is the presence of respiratory-chain deficient fibres. These fibres are detected as cytochrome c oxidase-deficient following a sequential cytochrome c oxidase-succinate dehydrogenase reaction, often in a mosaic pattern within a population of cytochrome c oxidase-normal fibres. Detailed analysis of muscle biopsies from patients with various mitochondrial DNA defects shows that a spectrum of deficiency exists, as there are a large number of fibres which do not correspond to being either completely cytochrome

Vitamin A deficiency has been commonly observed in patients with tuberculosis. Low serum retinol levels return to normal after antituberculosis treatment even when no supplements are provided. The deficiency of vitamin A observed in patients with tuberculosis might have contributed to the development of tuberculous disease in them. Alternatively, deficiency could be the result of loss of appetite, poor intestinal absorption, increased urinary loss of vitamin A or acute phase reaction in TB. Vitamin A deficiency lowers immunity while vitamin A supplementation reduces morbidity and mortality, pa

Vitamin D deficiency is now recognized as an epidemic in the United States. The major source of vitamin D for both children and adults is from sensible sun exposure. In the absence of sun exposure 1000 IU of cholecalciferol is required daily for both children and adults. Vitamin D deficiency causes poor mineralization of the collagen matrix in young children's bones leading to growth retardation and bone deformities known as rickets. In adults, vitamin D deficiency induces secondary hyperparathyroidism, which causes a loss of matrix and minerals, thus increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fr

The essentiality of zinc for humans was recognized in the early 1960s. The causes of zinc deficiency include malnutrition, alcoholism, malabsorption, extensive burns, chronic debilitating disorders, chronic renal disease, certain diuretics, the use of chelating agents such as penicillamine for Wilson's disease, and genetic disorders such as acrodermatitis enteropathica and sickle cell disease. The requirement of zinc is increased in pregnancy and during the growing age period. The clinical manifestations in severe cases of zinc deficiency included bullous-pustular dermatitis, alopecia, diarrho

Adjuvant arthritis has been studied in young copper-deficient rats and a very strong inhibition of the disease following 60 days of deficient diet (0.4 ppm of copper) was found. No difference in lung prostaglandin synthesis and in rat stomach strip and colon reactivity to exogenous prostaglandins was noticed between controls and copper-deficient animals. These results are briefly discussed.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with TB infection (TBI) serving as the primary source of TB disease. While HIV infection has long been recognised as a major risk factor for TB progression, the rise of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), which may exert immunosuppressive effects, further compounded by their treatment, contributes to increased TB susceptibility. This scoping review synthesises evidence from systematic reviews on medical and behavioural risk factors for TBI progression to TB disease, for both asym

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is an IgG4-related disease where pathological role and clinical significance of IgG4 antibodies remain largely unknown. This report shows a rare case of retroperitoneal fibrosis in presence of Autoimmune coagulation factor XIII deficiency, in which an acute life-threatening hemorrhage was successfully managed with effective treatment strategies. Following this, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the patient's pathology using experimental translational approach.
CASE PRESENTATION AND RESEARCH RESULTS: The patient was a 60-year-ol

Viral encephalitis is a serious condition that causes acute neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, cognitive deficits and behavioral changes, while putting patients at risk of developing seizures (ictogenesis) and post-encephalitis epilepsy. Intracerebral injection of C57BL/6 mice with Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) is a model of viral encephalitis that causes behavioral seizures along with substantial neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. This model is considered a benchmark preclinical paradigm for the investigation of hippocampal-dependent viral ictogenesis and temporal l

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is an emerging public health problem that affects more than one billion people worldwide. Vitamin D has been shown to be effective in preventing and reducing the severity of viral respiratory diseases, including influenza. However, the role of vitamin D in COVID-19 infection remains controversial. This study aimed to analyze the association of vitamin D deficiency on the clinical outcome of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among hospitalized COVID-19 patients at two COVID-19 referral hospitals in Indonesia from

Introduction Vitamin D, essential for various bodily functions, exists as D2 and D3, synthesized from plant and animal sources. Deficiency, linked to reduced intake, sun exposure, or metabolic disorders, poses health risks like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Management includes fortification, supplements, and individual assessment to avoid toxicity. Our study aimed to assess the public awareness of vitamin D deficiency in Qassim, Saudi Arabia, examining its relationship with sociodemographic factors. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) disease can cause asymptomatic and mild flu-like symptoms as well as severe symptoms ranging from respiratory failure and death. Growth hormone (GH) is produced in the anterior pituitary and plays an important role in the immune system. COVID-19 is severe in the elderly, men, obese, diabetics, and people with immune deficiency. The probability of GH deficiency is high in these patient groups. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of COVID-19 infection and GH level.
METHODS: A total of 456 patients, between 4

BACKGROUND: The retinol level and retinol delivery to the placenta may vary depending on various factors involving the mother and newborn. The present study evaluates the factors affecting retinol levels in newborns and the transplacental retinol passage in preterm newborns.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, the retinol and retinol binding protein (RBP) in the umbilical cord blood of 44 preterm infants with a gestation age of <30 weeks were studied. Serum retinol and RBP levels were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the rate of transplacental retinol passage

BACKGROUND: Children living in sub-Saharan Africa have a high burden of rickets and infectious diseases, conditions that are linked to vitamin D deficiency. However, data on the vitamin D status of young African children and its environmental and genetic predictors are limited. We aimed to examine the prevalence and predictors of vitamin D deficiency in young African children.
METHODS: We measured 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and typed the single nucleotide polymorphisms, rs4588 and rs7041, in the GC gene encoding the vitamin D binding protein (DBP) in 4509 children aged 0-8 years living in

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic condition associated with several respiratory diseases in patients with severe protein deficiency. AATD is often late diagnosed or underdiagnosed. Diagnosis frequently occurs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema characterized by frequent exacerbations and over ten years' duration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in patients with the chronic pulmonary disease after a thorough screening in the city of Naples in southern Italy.

INTRODUCTION: It has been shown that progranulin (PGRN) deficiency causes age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), a lysosomal storage disease. Previous studies also suggested that PGRN is involved in modulating lysosomal function. To elucidate the pathophysiological role of PGRN in the aged brain, in the present study, lysosomal function and pathological changes of the brain were investigated using 10- and 90-week-old wild-type and PGRN-deficient mice.
RESULTS: We showed that PGRN deficiency caused enhan

Malnutrition is common among HIV-infected individuals and is often accompanied by low serum levels of micronutrients. Vitamin B-12 deficiency has been associated with various factors including faster HIV disease progression and CD4 depletion in resource-rich settings. To describe prevalence and factors associated with sub-optimal vitamin B-12 levels among HIV-infected antiretroviral therapy (ART) naïve adults in a resource-poor setting, we performed a cross-sectional study with a retrospective chart review among individuals attending either the Mulago-Mbarara teaching hospitals' Joint AIDS Pro

CONTEXT: Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional problem experienced by childbearing women, and postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric disorder seen during the first year after delivery. The possible link between iron deficiency and PPD is not clear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether iron status 48 h after delivery was associated with PPD. Our hypothesis was that iron deficiency would be associated with PPD.
DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study of depression-free women studied in the postpartum period.
SETTING: Women who give birth at obstetric units in severa

Deficiency of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) activity is an inborn error of purine metabolism associated with uric acid overproduction and a continuum spectrum of neurological manifestations depending on the degree of enzyme deficiency. The complete deficiency causes Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS). Partial HPRT-deficient patients can show a variable degree of neurological manifestations. Both diseases have been associated with mutations in the HPRT1 gene. Documented mutations in HPRT deficiency show a high degree of heterogeneity in type and location within the gene. In fact

Copper deficiency (normal serum copper level: 78-136 micrograms/dl) has been reported in patients with long-term enteral nutrition, caused by a copper deficit in enteral nutrition. Occasionally, this leads to anemia and leukopenia. We used Hershey's pure cocoa that is rich in copper (content 3.8 mg/cocoa 100 g) for copper deficiency. A total of 86 (40 men and 46 women, mean age 69 years) patients on enteral nutrition were studied. The primary diseases were cerebral vascular disease in 71 patients, neurological disease in 5 and others in 10. Those who showed serum copper levels of 20 micrograms

The object of the present study is to review all that in the last years has been discovered about growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), in order to point out both its physiopathological characteristics and its possible diagnostic and therapeutic use. In the first section are summarily reviewed the different studies that culminated in 1982 with the identification of three GRF: GRF(1-37)-OH, GRF(1-40)-OH and GRF(1-44)-NH2, the last of which, by immunohistochemical methods, resulted to be similar to the hypothalamic hGHRH. Then we describe the anatomic distribution of GHRH in man, and its mech
