[A Case of Aplastic or Twig-Like Middle Cerebral Artery Presenting with an Intracranial Hemorrhage Two Years after a Transient Ischemic Attack].

Aplastic or twig-like middle cerebral artery (Ap/T-MCA) is a rare anatomical anomaly, which can be associated with intracranial hemorrhage and cerebral ischemia. A 52-year-old woman who presented with sudden headache was admitted to our hospital. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging showed no abnormality; however, magnetic resonance angiogram revealed an occlusion or severe stenosis in the left middle cerebral artery. Three-dimensional CT angiography demonstrated severe stenosis in the left middle cerebral artery. The patient was discharged without any neurological deficit;

Leukoencephalopathy syndrome after living-donor liver transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: Leukoencephalopathy syndrome is a neurologic complication after organ transplantation caused predominantly by the neurotoxic effects of immunosuppressive agents on cerebral white matter. We determined the incidence and features of leukoencephalopathy syndrome in recipients after living-donor liver transplantations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 205 patients who had a living-donor liver transplantation performed at our institution between August 1998 and October 2008. RESULTS: Leukoencephalopathy syndrome developed in 7 of 205 patients (3.9%) and in 4.7% o

Nontumoral occipitotemporal epilepsy: localizing findings and surgical outcome.

We describe a syndrome of medically intractable occipitotemporal epilepsy of nontumoral developmental origin and its treatment by surgery. From our epilepsy surgery database of 1988 to 1996, we selected all patients without neoplasm who had at least two characteristics localizing to the occipital lobe (clinical symptoms, interictal focus, ictal onset, or a lesion on magnetic resonance imaging scanning) and one to the temporal lobe (interictal spikes or seizure onset). We discuss seizure characteristics, electroencephalographic (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomographic, a

Value of susceptibility-weighted imaging in differentiating benign from malignant portal vein thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Many diseases are accompanied by portal vein thrombosis (PVT), and its nature is closely related to its prognosis and treatment. It is important to evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters, including susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and qualitative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), in the differentiation between benign and malignant PVT. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we collected clinical imaging data from 140 patients with PVTs characterized as benign or malignant based on enhanced MRI between January 2011 and April 2016 and retrospectively analyzed PVTs

Characteristics of primary giant cell tumor in soft tissue on magnetic resonance imaging: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary soft tissue giant cell tumor (GCT-ST) is rare and has relatively low malignant potential. Most reports are pathological and clinical studies, while imaging studies have only been reported in cases of adjacent bone or with atypical cystic degeneration. With regard to the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasonography, superficial masses can be further identified based on facial edema, skin thickening, skin contact, internal hemorrhage or necrosis and lobulation of the mass. Unlike deep-seated masses, MRI features do not always provide an accurate diagnosis f

[Intramedullary spinal cord tumors : MRI diagnosis and differential diagnosis].

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare neoplasms but frequently cause significant neurological deficits because of the limited compensatory capacity of the spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice and often allows a reliable differential diagnosis based on characteristic imaging findings. OBJECTIVES: To provide a practical neuroradiological approach to the diagnosis of intramedullary spinal cord tumors, including recent developments in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Narrative review of the curr

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm arising in the cystic duct and extending into common bile duct: a case report.

An 83-year-old man without specific symptoms was referred to our hospital for further evaluation and treatment of apparent double primary tumors of the cystic duct and common bile duct. Computed tomography showed contrast-enhanced solid tumors in the cystic duct and common bile duct. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the bile duct tumor was isointense on T1-weighted images and had low intensity on T2-weighted images. In addition, the bile duct tumor showed high intensity on diffusion-weighted images. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed the tumor of the common bile duct and endoscopic retr

Automatic classification of dyslexic children by applying machine learning to fMRI images.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) are a source of information to study different pathologies. This tool allows to classify subjects under study, analysing in this case, the functions related to language in young patients with dyslexia. Images are obtained using a scanner and different tests are performed on subjects. After processing the images, the areas that are activated by patients when performing the paradigms or anatomy of the tracts were obtained. The main objective is to ultimately introduce a group of monocular vision subjects, whose brain

Phase-Dependent Transformation in NME: From Clumped to Clustered Ring on Breast MRI.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Non-mass enhancement (NME) is a challenging entity in breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) because of its heterogeneous morphology and high false-positive rate. Clustered ring enhancement (CRE) is recognized as a suspicious BI-RADS internal enhancement pattern; however, its phase-dependent depiction across dynamic acquisitions has not been systematically evaluated. This study aimed to investigate the association between phase-dependent appearance of CRE and malignancy in NME lesions and to assess the complementary role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Age dictates brain functional connectivity and axonal integrity following repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries in mice.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) present a major public health challenge, demanding an in-depth understanding of age-specific symptoms and risk factors. Aging not only significantly influences brain function and plasticity but also elevates the risk of hospitalizations and death following TBIs. Repetitive mild TBIs (rmTBI) compound these issues, resulting in cumulative and long-term brain damage in the brain. In this study, we investigate the impact of age on brain network changes and white matter properties following rmTBI by employing a multi-modal approach that integrates resting-state functi

Oxygen Metabolic Stress and White Matter Injury in Patients With Cerebral Small Vessel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypoxia-ischemia is a putative mechanism underlying the development of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and microstructural disruption in cerebral small vessel disease. WMH fall primarily within deep white matter (WM) watershed regions. We hypothesized that elevated oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), a signature of hypoxia-ischemia, would be detected in the watershed where WMH density is highest. We further hypothesized that OEF would be elevated in regions immediately surrounding WMH, at the leading edge of growth. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted from 2
