Hand hygiene practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and associated factors among barbers and beauty salon workers in Ethiopia.

Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is still causing morbidity and mortality all over the world. Preventive measures such as wearing a facemask, social distancing and hand hygiene continue to be the only options available in countries such as Ethiopia where vaccines are not yet widely available. Hand hygiene is one of the easiest and cheapest preventive measures, and one that is especially important for barbers and beauty salon workers who are widely exposed to the virus due to their contact with many customers. Therefore, measuring the proportion of good hand hygiene practices and associated

Metabolic dysfunction reflected by METS-IR in the association between sleep disorders and tooth looseness: a secondary data analysis of NHANES 2011-2020.

BACKGROUND: Tooth looseness is a clinically relevant self-reported oral health outcome that may reflect compromised tooth support. Sleep disorders have been associated with adverse oral health, but whether metabolic dysfunction contributes to the association between sleep disorder status and tooth looseness remains unclear. This study examined the association between self-reported sleep disorder status and tooth looseness and evaluated whether metabolic dysfunction, reflected by continuous metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), statistically accounted for part of this association.

Effective initiation of osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment for patients with a fragility fracture in an orthopaedic environment.

BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures resulting from osteoporosis are common injuries. However, the identification and treatment of osteoporosis in these high-risk patients are widely reported to be inadequate. The goals of this study were to determine how many patients receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment for a fragility fracture could be identified and enrolled in a program for osteoporosis education, investigation, and treatment and receive appropriate osteoporosis care within the program. METHODS: An Osteoporosis Exemplary Care Program was implemented to identify, educate, evaluate, refe

Physicians' attitude and practices in sickle cell disease pain management.

Many physicians believe that patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are more likely to become addicted to pain medication than are other patient populations. This study hypothesizes that physicians' attitudes towards addiction in patients with SCD affects pain management practices. The Physician Attitudes Survey was sent to 286 physicians at seven National Institutes of Health-funded university-based comprehensive sickle cell centres. The survey assessed demographic information; and physician's attitudes toward and knowledge of pain, pain treatment, and drug addiction and abuse. Significant P

Management of the primary cutaneous lymphomas.

Cutaneous lymphomas are rare and, although some are a manifestation of systemic lymphoma, the majority arise primarily from the skin. These primary cutaneous lymphomas comprise both T- and B-cell subtypes and represent a wide spectrum of disorders, which at times can be difficult to diagnose and classify. Classical therapeutic strategies include topical corticosteroids, phototherapy, radiotherapy, retinoids, extracorporeal photopheresis, topical chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy and biological response modifiers. Newer therapies include the synthetic retinoid bexarotene, the immunotoxin conj

Planning the content of a brief educational course in maxillofacial emergencies for staff in accident and emergency departments: a modified Delphi study.

It is well known that staff in accident and emergency (A&E) departments lack the knowledge and confidence needed to deal with maxillofacial emergencies, and that it is related to limited education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We therefore aimed to design a syllabus for a short course to educate staff about the most common emergencies. To find out which learning outcomes should be included and to reach a consensus, we did a 3-stage modified Delphi study of the opinions of members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). Of a possible 890 members, 188 r

Improvement of hypertension management by structured physician education and feedback system: cluster randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to assess whether hypertension management with a structured physician information program and a feedback system leads to improved blood pressure (BP) control and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: Cluster randomized (3 : 1), open, monitored, multicenter trial in Germany. Primary care-based physicians in the information group (IG) received detailed training on hypertension guidelines, feedback on target-level attainment, and a reminder to intensify treatment after each patient visit, whereas the observation/control group (CG) did not receive any such measures. Adherence to clean intermittent self-catheterization procedures: determinants explored.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to explore factors that hinder or promote adherence to clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) procedures in adults. BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent self-catherization is associated with favourable patient outcomes, but adherence to the procedure is not addressed in the international literature. METHODS: Relevant factors were explored in two studies. The first study (n = 10) addressed mastery and short-term adherence, whereas the second study (n = 20) addressed long-term adherence in these patients. Determinants of patient adherence w

Can nurses appropriately interpret the Ottawa Ankle Rule?

The objective of this study was to determine if ED triage nurses could appropriately interpret the Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR). We conducted a prospective, observational trial of a clinical decision rule in a suburban ED on a convenience sample of ED patients, aged >17 years with acute ankle injuries. Nurses and EPs were trained in the appropriate use of the OAR. Nurses and physicians recorded their initial blinded patient assessments on standardized data collection instruments that included the OAR. X-rays were ordered without specific discretion to OAR by nurses or physicians. Sensitivity, spec
