Refining the Baveno VI elastography criteria for the definition of compensated advanced chronic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: The Baveno VI consensus proposed a dual liver stiffness (LS) by transient elastography threshold of <10 and >15 kPa for excluding and diagnosing compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) in the absence of other clinical signs. Herein, we aimed to validate these criteria in a real-world multicentre study. METHODS: We included 5,648 patients (mean age 51 ± 13 years, 53% males) from 10 European liver centres who had a liver biopsy and LS measurement within 6 months. We included patients with chronic hepatitis C (n = 2,913, 52%), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, n =

Elastography Study of Hamstring Behaviors during Passive Stretching.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanical properties of hamstring muscles are usually inferred from global passive torque/angle relationships, in combination with adjoining tissues crossing the joint investigated. Shear modulus measurement provides an estimate of changes in muscle-tendon stiffness and passive tension. This study aimed to assess the passive individual behavior of each hamstring muscle in different stretching positions using shear wave elastography. METHODS/RESULTS: The muscle shear modulus of each hamstring muscle was measured during a standardized slow passive knee extension (PKE, 80% of

MR-based measurements of portal vein flow and liver stiffness for predicting gastroesophageal varices.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated flow parameters measured by phase-contrast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (PC-MRI) of the portal venous system and liver stiffness measured by MR elastography (MRE) to determine the usefulness of these methods in predicting gastroesophageal varices (GEV) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). METHODS: In patients with CLD and controls, we performed PC-MRI on the portal (PV) and superior mesenteric veins; calculated mean velocity (V, cm/s), cross-sectional area (S, mm²), and flow volume (Q, mL/min); and determined markers of liver fibrosis (liver stiffness [kPa

Calibration of hyperelastic material properties of the human lumbar intervertebral disc under fast dynamic compressive loads.

Under fast dynamic loading conditions (e.g. high-energy impact), the load rate dependency of the intervertebral disc (IVD) material properties may play a crucial role in the biomechanics of spinal trauma. However, most finite element models (FEM) of dynamic spinal trauma uses material properties derived from quasi-static experiments, thus neglecting this load rate dependency. The aim of this study was to identify hyperelastic material properties that ensure a more biofidelic simulation of the IVD under a fast dynamic compressive load. A hyperelastic material law based on a first-order Mooney-R

Trabecular meshwork stiffness in glaucoma.

Alterations in stiffness of the trabecular meshwork (TM) may play an important role in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the second leading cause of blindness. Specifically, certain data suggest an association between elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and increased TM stiffness; however, the underlying link between TM stiffness and IOP remains unclear and requires further study. We here first review the literature on TM stiffness measurements, encompassing various species and based on a number of measurement techniques, including direct approaches such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and

Left Atrial Dysfunction in the Pathogenesis of Cryptogenic Stroke: Novel Insights from Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial strain analysis by speckle-tracking echocardiography, which can detect subtle abnormalities in left atrial (LA) function, may offer unique insights into LA pathophysiology in patients with cryptogenic stroke (CS). The aim of this study was to investigate whether LA reservoir strain by speckle-tracking echocardiography, as a measure of LA compliance, is impaired in patients with CS and no history of atrial fibrillation. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study of 742 patients (mean age, 59 ± 13 years; 54% men; 371 with CS and 371 control subjects) was conducted. LA re

Longitudinal systolic strain profiles and outcomes in peripartum cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare cause of heart failure that develops in the last month of pregnancy or within 5 months of delivery. Longitudinal systolic strain has been shown to be impaired in HF patients with both preserved and depressed EF, but has not previously characterized in patients with PPCM. METHODS: The purpose of our study was to investigate the prognosis and recovery in patients with PPCM and use 2D strain imaging to characterize regional and global LV strain in patients with PPCM. Between 2009 and 2014, we identified 47 newly diagnosed patients with PPCM a

Serial change of liver stiffness measured by acoustic radiation force impulse imaging in chronic liver disease: correlation with biochemical markers.

PURPOSE: In patients with chronic diffuse liver diseases, liver fibrosis severity is an important element for prognosis and for selecting therapy. Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging techniques were recently developed to measure liver fibrosis, but their specificity is impaired by cholestasis, inflammation, or edema in acute hepatitis. Herein, our objectives were to evaluate serial changes in shear wave velocity (SWV) and to correlate these changes with biochemical activity. METHODS: This study included 108 patients who underwent ARFI because of viral hepatitis [hepatitis B (HBV)

Development of an ultrasound system for measuring tissue strain of lymphedema.

This paper develops a portable measurement system for tissue strain distribution using ultrasonic pulse echo method. A single element ultrasonic transducer attached to a force sensor compresses biological tissue and observes the deformation process of the tissue. The center frequency of the ultrasound pulse is 3 MHz. The force applied to the tissue is kept at 10 N by an internal coil spring. Received echo signals are transferred to a personal computer via Universal Serial Bus. The developed measurement system was applied to measuring strain of subcutaneous fat for lymphedema patients and healt

Nucleation, Creep, and Dynamic Tensile Fracture Are Described by Extended LEFM.

We experimentally validate a new description of brittle tensile fracture that extends linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) to account for the 2D geometry of propagating cracks in plates of finite thickness, W. We show that cracks nucleate below the Griffith length at a critical stress threshold. They then creep (at constant velocities orders of magnitude below the Rayleigh wave speed) until expanding to W. Only then do cracks undergo dynamic 1D fracture. The new theory quantitatively describes all of these dynamics. These results have important ramifications to all aspects of material fail

[Advances in the study of polyetheretherketone and its composites in the field of dental implantology].

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composite materials have garnered widespread attention in the field of dental implantology due to their good biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. The low elastic modulus of PEEK, comparable to that of human jawbone, helps to reduce the stress shielding effect around the implant, thereby enhancing the rate of bone integration. This article reviews the latest research progress of PEEK and its composite materials in the field of dental implantation, including the synthesis of materials, surface modification techniques, and applicat

Anetoderma in the Setting of a Hematologic Abnormality and COVID-19 Infection.

Anetoderma is an uncommonly reported dermatosis clinically characterized by discrete skin lesions resulting from elastic fiber loss within the dermis. Although primary anetoderma has been considered idiopathic, a range of associated disorders, particularly prothrombotic abnormalities, have been reported. We present a 79-year-old woman with a heterozygous Factor V Leiden mutation who developed anetoderma shortly after COVID-19 infection complicated by a thromboembolic event. Our patient adds to the literature on the occurrence of anetoderma in the setting of infection and/or a prothrombotic dis

Wearable strain sensor integrating mechanoluminescent fiber with a flexible printed circuit.

This paper reports an optical strain sensor that integrates a self-powered mechanoluminescent (ML) elastic fiber with a flexible circuit. The inclusion of an alumina nanoparticle as the additive results in seven-fold enhancement of ML intensity while maintaining flexibility of 120% strain. The sensor facilitates the detection of strain and stretching speed. It attains a sensitivity of 0.0022 lx/(1% strain) and a resolution of 0.2% strain, respectively. We have successfully applied it to detect bending motions of the finger, wrist, and elbow. This wearable strain sensor holds promise for divers

Whey-Derived Porous Carbon Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering.

Porous carbon structures derived from whey powders are described and evaluated as potential scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. These materials have a porosity between 48% and 58%, with a hierarchical pore size distribution ranging from 1 to 400 micrometres. Compressive strength and elastic modulus are outstanding for such a porous material, being up to three times better than those of traditional HA or TCP scaffolds with similar porosities. They also present non-cytotoxic and bioactive behavior, due to their carbon-based composition that also includes some residual mineral salts content.

Miniscrew-anchored maxillary protraction in growing Class III patients.

The aim of this article is to report a case series of a miniscrew-anchored maxillary protraction therapy (MAMP). Two male patients presenting with Class III malocclusion were included in this report. The treatment consisted of a hybrid expander and two miniscrews at the anterior region of the mandible anchoring Class III elastics for maxillary protraction. Effective maxillary length, ANB angle and Wits appraisal increased after treatment. Slight dental effects were observed. MAMP therapy produced substantial skeletal effects and might be a good treatment option for Class III growing patients.
