Acetylcholine receptor-rich membrane fragments purified from Torpedo marmorata electric organ were phosphorylated, in vitro, by endogenous protein kinases. The 40 000-Mr chain, which carries the acetylcholine receptor site, was never labelled; on the other hand, protein bands of apparent molecular weights 43 000, 50 000 and 66 000, which are present in the acetylcholine receptor-rich membranes, were repeatedly phosphorylated. Two technics (chronic electrodes-electrointraperitoneography : EIG) have been used simultaneously in the conscious dog for the pharmacological study of drug effects on the electrical activity of intestine. The results show a good correlation between records obtained with the technic which needs a surgical operation (chronic electrodes) and the other which doesn't (EIG). The expected effects of the parasympathomimetic (acetylcholine-neostigmine) parasympatholytic (scopolamine) and adrenergic (epinephrine-neosynephrine) drugs used on the spiking activity are obtained with the two technics.

beta-Endorphin-like immunoreactivity in human ventricular cerebrospinal fluid was measured with a specific radioimmunoassay. The subjects were undergoing a surgical procedure for relief of chronic intractable pain. The median eminence (ME) region of the hypothalamus was electrically stimulated through permanently implanted electrodes in 1 unanesthetized sheep. Plasma concentrations of GH and prolactin (PRL) were measured at 10-min intervals before, during and after 30-min periods of electrical stimulation or sham procedures. Serious questions are raised as to whether electrical control of pain is related to stimulation of the dorsal columns per se or the conduction of the electrical impulse via the cerebrospinal fluid to the ventrolateral columns.
