Development of a selective fluorescent probe for sensitive detection of HSO3- in biological and environmental samples.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a significant atmospheric pollutant and food additive, with excessive sulfite (HSO3-) consumption linked to health risks such as respiratory and cardiovascular disorders. Reliable, sensitive detection of HSO3- is essential for food safety and environmental monitoring. Here, we present a novel fluorescent probe (HMQ) for the selective detection of HSO3- in biological and environmental samples. The probe exhibits a distinct "ON-OFF" fluorescence response due to a nucleophilic addition mechanism, enabling high selectivity for HSO3- over other anions. HMQ was successfully a

Global warming and testis function: A challenging crosstalk in an equally challenging environmental scenario.

Environmental pollution, accounting for both chemical and physical factors, is a major matter of concern due to its health consequences in both humans and animals. The release of greenhouse gases with the consequent increase in environmental temperature is acknowledged to have a major impact on the health of both animals and humans, in current and future generations. A large amount of evidence reports detrimental effects of acute heat stress on testis function, particularly on the spermatogenetic and steroidogenetic process, in both animal and human models, wich is largely related to the testi

The Occurrence of Intersex in Different Populations of the Marine Amphipod Echinogammarus marinus in North-West Brittany - A Longterm-Study.

In the past two decades, an increasing body of studies has been published on the intersex phenomenon in separate-sexed crustaceans from marine and freshwater ecosystems. Various causes are being considered that could have an influence on the occurrence of intersex. Besides genetic factors, environmental conditions such as photoperiodicity, temperature, salinity and parasitism, but also environmental pollution with endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are discussed. As part of a long-term monitoring (2012 - 2020) in north-west Brittany, we recorded the occurrence of intersex in the marine amph

Environmental exposures and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines evidence relating environmental factors to the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). RECENT FINDINGS: The strongest epidemiologic evidence exists for the associations of silica, cigarette smoking, oral contraceptives, postmenopausal hormone therapy and endometriosis, with SLE incidence. Recent studies have also provided robust evidence of the association between alcohol consumption and decreased SLE risk. There are preliminary, conflicting or unsubstantiated data that other factors, including air pollution, ultraviolet light, infections, va

Biomarkers of exposure to carcinogenic PAHs and their relationship with environmental factors.

The EXPAH project is a multicentre European study in which biomarkers of exposure, biomarkers of effect, genetic susceptibility and environmental factors were studied in populations exposed to differing levels of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (c-PAHs). We describe here the relationships between the levels of DNA adducts (as biomarkers of exposure), the exposure to air pollution and smoking status. Lymphocyte bulky DNA adducts were significantly correlated with exposure when subjects were classified either by job description or by personal monitor measurements, and both bulky an

Toxic effects of water eutrophication on pancreatic, hepatic and osteogenic tissues of rats.

Pollution, industrial solvents, concentrations of metals and other environmental agents are widely related to biochemicals values which are used in disease diagnosis of environmental toxicity. A rat bioassay validated for the identification of toxic effects of eutrophication revealed increased serum activities of amylase, alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in rats that received algae, filtered water and nickel or cadmium from drinking water. Serum Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity decreased from its basal level of 40.8 +/- 2.3 to 26.4 U/mg protein, at 7 days of algae a

Trace metals contamination in freshwater fish in Brazil: related factors, environmental impacts, and risks to human health.

Freshwater fish are essential components of the aquatic food chain and an important source of protein and nutrients for various communities, especially riverine populations. However, water pollution is one of the main causes of metal bioaccumulation in the organs of these animals. This study conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature on trace metal contamination in freshwater fish in Brazil. The methodological procedure was structured in three stages: definition of the research problem, application of a relevance test with inclusion and exclusion criteria, and selection of elig

Associations of low-level multi-metal exposure with peripheral blood-based inflammatory indices and the mediating role of gut microbiota: evidence from lifestyle-standardized men.

With improving environmental regulation and pollution control, low-level multi-metal exposure and its potential health impacts have received increasing attention. However, evidence on metal-related immune-inflammatory phenotypes and mechanisms at low-exposure ranges remains limited. We therefore evaluated the associations between low-level multi-metal exposure and peripheral blood-based inflammatory indices and further explored the mediation roles of gut microbiota. We enrolled 98 men from a centrally managed setting with relatively standardized diets and daily routines. After measuring plasma

Impact of different vehicle distances on PM2.5 concentration and population exposure from two electric two-wheelers traveling side-by-side.

As a commuting tool, electric two-wheelers are convenient, fast, and environmentally friendly. Electric two-wheelers accounted for more than 75% of all electric vehicles. However, riding electric two-wheelers may generate resuspension dust pollution, which may pose a risk of dust exposure due to directly exposed to the air environment for riders. So it is necessary to study the road dust generated during the electric two-wheelers traveling, and impact of different vehicle distances on PM2.5 concentration and population. Computational fluid dynamics method and sliding mesh technique were used t

Evaluation of the biotic ligand model for the development of benthic toxicity thresholds and remedial goals for metals at sediment management sites.

A combined risk assessment and risk management framework is proposed for application of a multimetal biotic ligand model (mBLM) to develop bulk sediment remedial goals for metals in sediments. Sediment chemistry and toxicity data from five freshwater sediment study areas were compiled to illustrate how this framework could be applied. Based on these data, the mBLM accurately predicted toxicity to Hyalella azteca in 85.3% of the samples with respect to H. azteca 20% effect concentrations (EC20s) and in 75.1% of the samples with respect to derived final chronic values (FCVs). The sum of porewate

Association of exposure to phthalates and substitutes with infection risk among U.S. children.

Early-life exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been associated with compromised immune outcomes in childhood, while evidence regarding DEHP substitutes, such as di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), di-isononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DiNCH) and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP), remains limited. This study analyzed urinary concentrations of 18 phthalate metabolites, including legacy phthalates and the newer substitutes, and examined their associations with overall infection risk among 1989 U.S. children representative of the US population stratified into three vulnerable age

Associations of serum per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) mixture with the risk of chronic diseases: evidence from single‑ , multi-pollutant, and machine learning models.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals commonly found in consumer products. Despite growing concern over their health effects, their associations with chronic diseases in humans are still unclear. We included 10,093 participants to examine the associations between 8 PFAS and 40 chronic diseases. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were applied to evaluate linear and nonlinear associations, and mixture effects were further assessed using weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), quantile-based g-computation (q g‑comp), and Bayesi

Fluorescent sensor approaches for mercury detection: Chemosensors, carbon dots, MOFs, and nanomaterials.

Mercury (Hg2+) is a highly toxic and bio accumulative environmental pollutant, where even trace concentrations demand rapid, sensitive, and selective detection in complex media. Although traditional analytical methods offer precision, their reliance on costly infrastructure and lengthy protocols limits field deployment. Fluorescent chemo sensors, carbon dots (CDs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and hybrid nanomaterials provide compelling alternatives, leveraging high sensitivity, tunable selectivity, and visual output for real-time analysis. This review critically evaluates recent advances
