[Schizophrenic patients and the emotional climate in the family. Causes, consequences and treatment of intensely expressed emotions of close relatives].

In recent years it has been shown that the course of schizophrenia is influenced by the attitudes and behaviour of the close relatives with whom the schizophrenic person lives. In particular, there is greater risk of relapse if family members show a high degree of criticism, hostility, or emotional over-involvement in relation to the schizophrenic; these attitudes have been described as high expressed emotion (High EE) and are usually assessed by means of the Camberwell family interview. However, as discussed in this paper, there are still many unsettled questions regarding content, validity,

Benign essential tremor. A clinical survey of 82 patients from Campania, a region of southern Italy.

We report a clinical survey of 82 patients with benign essential tremor (ET). Sixty five patients had a positive family history. Onset age showed two peaks before 20 years and in the sixth decade. Segregation analysis confirmed an autosomal dominant inheritance. Head tremor occurred mainly in aged women, mental symptoms occurred mainly in subjects with a low onset age and a disabling tremor. An early onset age was not related to paternal or maternal transmission. In one family ET was associated with retinitis pigmentosa and ichthyosis.

A kindred with alopecia, keratosis, pilaris, cataracts, and psoriasis.

Three members of a family with numerous ectodermal abnormalities are described. These anomalies primarily include patchy alopecia beginning in childhood, premature cataracts, widespread keratosis pilaris, and psoriasis. The alopecia and premature cataracts appear to follow an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with incomplete penetrance and appear to be linked. Psoriasis also occurs in several members of this family and probably represents a separate but possibly related genodermatosis. This kindred has features of both keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans and ichthyosis follicularis

Navigating the delicate balance of autonomy and harmony: a case study on the cultural adaptation of palliative care interventions in China.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of palliative care in China faces distinct challenges influenced by cultural and societal factors that significantly affect terminally ill patients and their families. This case study examines how palliative care interventions adapted to Chinese cultural factors such as death taboos, indirect communication styles, family-centered decision-making, and relational harmony helped empower a patient's autonomy, facilitate self-expression, and support personal transformation while aligning with Chinese cultural norms. METHODS: This retrospective study utilized Interpre

Nucleotide sequence of XhoI O fragment of ectromelia virus DNA reveals significant differences from vaccinia virus.

The nucleotide sequence of the 3913 base pair XhoI O fragment located in an evolutionary variable region adjacent to the right end of the genome of ectromelia virus (EMV) was determined. The sequence contains two long open reading frames coding for putative proteins of 559 amino acid residues (p65) and 344 amino acid residues (p39). Amino acid database searches showed that p39 is closely related to vaccinia virus (VV), strain WR, B22R gene product (C12L gene product of strain Copenhagen), which belongs to the family of serine protease inhibitors (serpins). Despite the overall high conservation

Experiences of Distress Among Mothers of Children with Single-Ventricle Hearts: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with single-ventricle hearts (SVHs) experience high levels of distress associated with the illness. The treatment course for SVH often places a significant burden on family caregivers due to the complex nature of the disease, and the stress of this experience is moderated by the family's available emotional, social, and material resources to cope. OBJECTIVE: Given the high level of involvement of the family in the treatment course, viewing the entire family as the unit of care is likely an important component of effective care provision. Accordingly, the obj

Family-based genome-wide association analysis of novelty seeking in a Korean schizophrenic population: A pilot study.

Schizophrenia (SPR) is the most devastating mental illness that causes severe deterioration in social and occupational functioning, but, the etiology remains unknown. The objective of this study is to explore the genetic underpinnings of novelty seeking behavior in schizophrenic family within the Korean population. By conducting a family-based genome-wide association study, we aim to identify potential genetic markers and variations associated with novelty seeking traits in the context of SPR. We have recruited 27 probands (with SPR) with their parents and siblings whenever possible. DNA was e

Whole Exome Sequencing Identifies Three Novel Mutations in the ASPM Gene From Saudi Families Leading to Primary Microcephaly.

Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) is a neurodevelopmental defect that is characterized by reduced head circumference at birth along with non-progressive intellectual disability. Till date, 25 genes related to MCPH have been reported so far in humans. The ASPM (abnormal spindle-like, microcephaly-associated) gene is among the most frequently mutated MCPH gene. We studied three different families having primary microcephaly from different regions of Saudi Arabia. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing were done to identify the genetic defect. Collectively, three novel v

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and Epstein-Barr virus: a complex relationship with diverse origins, expression and outcomes.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus with rare but severe potential for lymphoproliferative complications. EBV is associated with a variety of presentations of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). HLH is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome that can occur in patients with genetic defects associated with dysregulation of the immune response (familial HLH) or arise in patients with underlying infection or malignancy (non-familial or secondary HLH). EBV can both serve as the incidental trigger of familial HLH or as the driving factor in patients with selective inher

Genomic Landscape and Mutational Spectrum of ADAMTS Family Genes in Mendelian Disorders Based on Gene Evidence Review for Variant Interpretation.

ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs) are a family of multidomain extracellular protease enzymes with 19 members. A growing number of ADAMTS family gene variants have been identified in patients with various hereditary diseases. To understand the genomic landscape and mutational spectrum of ADAMTS family genes, we evaluated all reported variants in the ClinVar database and Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD), as well as recent literature on Mendelian hereditary disorders associated with ADAMTS family genes. Among 1089 variants in 14 genes reported in public da

A founder EIF2AK4 mutation causes an aggressive form of pulmonary arterial hypertension in Iberian Gypsies.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a pathological condition characterized by a persistent and progressive elevation of pulmonary vascular resistance with devastating consequences if untreated. In the past recent years, several genes have been related to PAH, however, the molecular defect remains unknown in a significant proportion of patients with familial PAH (∼20%). During the past few years, we have observed that PAH shows a particular behavior in Iberian Gypsies, with more aggressive course and frequently affecting multiple members of the same family. We studied five Gypsy families i

Factors associated with parents' decisions to tell their adult offspring about the offspring's donor conception.

BACKGROUND: Tensions and anxieties surround secrecy within families in the context of gamete donation and family building. This paper presents the views of parents who had kept their use of donor insemination a secret from their offspring. A sub-set of these parents said that they wished to tell their now-adult offspring, and discussed the questions and issues this secrecy raised to them. METHODS: In-depth interviews were undertaken with heterosexual parents (of 44 families) who had given birth to children conceived via donor insemination between 1983 and 1987. These interviews comprised a fo
