Sodium bentonite and monensin under chronic aflatoxicosis in broiler chickens.

Clay feed additives have been increasingly incorporated into animal diets to prevent aflatoxicosis. Due to the nonselective nature of the binding interaction, many important components of the diets could also be made unavailable because of these feed additives. The anticoccidial monensin (MON) could also be sequestered by these clays. The use of sodium bentonite (Na-B) from a mine in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, was investigated as a sequestering agent to prevent the effects of 100 µg/kg of dietary aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)). In vitro studies demonstrated that the above Na-B was a good can

Infant-feeding methods and childhood sleep-disordered breathing.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sleep-disordered breathing has an adverse impact on cognitive development, behavior, quality of life, and use of health care resources. Early viral infections and other immune-mediated responses may contribute to development of the chronic inflammation of the upper airway and hypertrophic upper airway lymphadenoid tissues underlying childhood sleep-disordered breathing. Breastfeeding provides immunologic protection against such early exposures. Therefore, we sought to explore whether sleep-disordered breathing severity would differ for children who were breastfed as infant

Survival-determining factors in patients with neurologic impairments who received home health care in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The Japanese have become the longest-lived nation population in the world, and numbers of elderly who require medical and nursing care are increasing. The capacity of nursing homes and nursing institutions is sharply limited in Japan; further, as a group, elderly Japanese patients prefer home care to institutional care. For these reasons, the home health care system in Japan has been increasingly important. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify factors determining long-term survival in Japanese patients receiving home health care for neurologic disorders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retr

Learning to fear and cope with a natural stressor: individually and socially acquired corticosterone and avoidance responses to biting flies.

Animals learn to recognize and respond to a variety of dangerous factors, with biting and blood-feeding flies being among the most prevalent of natural stressors. Here we describe the behavioral avoidance and hormonal (corticosterone) stress responses to biting fly exposure and the roles of individual and social learning in the acquisition of these fear-associated responses. Male mice exposed to a single 30-min session of attack by intact biting flies (stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L.) exhibited increased plasma corticosterone levels and active self-burying responses to avoid the flies. When

A primary care approach to treating women without homes.

A high prevalence of psychiatric illness has been noted in the postpartum period. Recent research looks to the potential effects of maternal illness during this period on child development. With the promotion of breast feeding for well-documented medical benefits, there has been increasing attention to the potential effects on the infant of exposure to medication via breast milk. This article reviews the current literature on the secretion of psychotropic medication into breast milk, and any known negative effects. The shortcomings of these studies are highlighted, and recommendations to the c

Short- and long-periods of neonatal maternal separation differentially affect anxiety and feeding in adult rats: gender-dependent effects.

Environmental manipulations during early development can induce permanent alterations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and behavioral responses to stressors. However, little is known about the impact of early life experiences on appetitive responses. The present investigation assessed the effects of brief handling/separation or protracted separation from the dams, on feeding and anxiety responses during development. During the first 3 weeks post-partum, Sprague-Dawley rat pups were exposed daily to either brief (15 min) handling/isolation (H), a more protracted (3 h) period of maternal

Vaccination against Lawsonia intracellularis reduced tail-biting related behaviors in a commercial pig herd.

BACKGROUND: Lawsonia intracellularis is the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy, a common enteric disease in pigs that compromises intestinal integrity and may influence behavior through inflammation and immune activation. Its potential link to tail biting, an abnormal behavior that causes stress, injury and pain, remains unexplored. This study evaluated the effect of vaccination against L. intracellularis on tail-biting related behaviors, tail lesions, active behaviors, and postures in pigs reared under commercial conditions. METHODS: The study compared two groups in a commercial he

Orthorexia nervosa prevalence and associated factors in individuals attending a diet outpatient clinic: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with consuming healthy foods, which may lead to dietary restrictions, psychological distress, and social isolation. Despite its increasing recognition, ON is not yet formally classified in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM), and its prevalence among individuals seeking dietary guidance remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of orthorexic tendencies and their associated factors among individuals attending a diet outpatient clinic. METHODS: A cross-sectional

Infant feeding practice and associated factors among hiv-positive mothers attending anti-retroviral therapy services in health facilities of Bahir Dar City.

Infant feeding practices among Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-positive mothers are vital for child survival, nutrition, and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission. Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines promoting optimal infant feeding practices, adherence remains inconsistent in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess infant feeding practices and associated factors among HIV-positive mothers attending ART services in health facilities of Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia, 2023. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 15, 2023, to April 15, 2023. A s

Tracking Glucose Trends, Unveiling Clinical Patterns: Insights From Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Patients at the Extreme of BMI and Eating Disorders Psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances of glucose homoeostasis are claimed to act as both a consequence and maintaining factor in eating disorders (EDs). This study explored glucose trends and their association with real-time food intake and self-report eating psychopathology in a sample of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and binge-eating disorder (BED). METHOD: 30 patients (AN, 15; BED, 15) wore continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors while synchronously collecting data on daily food intake. CGM outputs were extracted and correlated with nutritional intake, daily meals composition and self-report e

Changes in diet from pregnancy to one year after birth: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and the first year after giving birth are marked by physiological and psychological changes. While it is well known that energy requirements change during this time, the question of how a woman's diet actually changes from pregnancy until 1 year postpartum has been left virtually unexplored. The present study employs a longitudinal design to investigate these changes. METHODS: Data were collected within the framework of the LIFE Child study (Leipzig, Germany). The diet composition and culture of eating of 110 women were assessed at 3 time points: in the 24th week of preg

The association between childhood maltreatment and eating disorder psychopathology: A mixed-model investigation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is recognized as a non-specific risk factor for Eating Disorders (EDs), but the mechanisms explaining this association have been insufficiently assessed. We aim to explore the psychological pathways through which CM experiences promote ED core symptoms. METHODS: Two-hundred-twenty-eight people with EDs, 94 with anorexia nervosa restricting (ANR) type and 134 with binge-purging (BP) symptoms (including 23 with AN purging type and 111 with bulimia nervosa), completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Childhood Trau

Effect of consecutive intragastric balloon (BIB®) plus diet versus single BIB® plus diet on eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) in obese patients.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterised by abnormal eating habits. Greater than 50 % of patients with eating disorders have an 'eating disorder not otherwise specified' (EDNOS). No specific tools exist to evaluate EDNOS, and patients are identified only with a diagnosis of exclusion from the other eating disorders. The BioEnterics® Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) is used worldwide as a short-term treatment option in obese patients. A new frequency score was used to evaluate the influence of double consecutive BIB® treatment compared with single BIB® treatment followed
