Is abandonment of nonoperative management of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis warranted?

AIM: Evaluation of the effectiveness of oral atropine versus surgical therapy for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). METHODOLOGY: A total of 66 consecutive patients with HPS were treated at the University Children's Hospital between January 2006 and December 2011. The diagnosis was initially based on medical history and confirmed by ultrasonography (US). The patients were divided into two groups according to the treatment preferred by their parents. The conservatively treated group, consisting of 33 boys and 7 girls, mean age 22.25 days, was given water-soluble atropine sulfate therapy at a

Evaluation of the long-lasting insecticidal net Interceptor LN: laboratory and experimental hut studies against anopheline and culicine mosquitoes in northeastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Long lasting insecticidal nets (LN) are a primary method of malaria prevention. Before new types of LN are approved they need to meet quality and efficacy standards set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The process of evaluation has three phases. In Phase I the candidate LN must meet threshold bioassay criteria after 20 standardized washes. In Phase II washed and unwashed LNs are evaluated in experimental huts against wild, free flying anopheline mosquitoes. In Phase III the LN are distributed to households in malaria endemic areas, sampled over three years of use and tested

Successful early neonatal repair of cleft lip within first 8 days of life.

OBJECTIVE: In the children born with a cleft lip, surgery is the first step in correcting the inborn anomaly. In comparison with usually made 3-month surgery, benefits of the surgery in neonates have been reported: a very good wound healing, feeding facilitation, and good socialization of a child from neonatal age. The aims of the present study were to perform cheiloplasty in early newborns affected by the total cleft lip and palate (CLP) by the technique modified to search for optimum aesthetic result, and to assess the surgery outcome from qualitative and quantitative aspects. METHODS: The

Complications of radiotherapy in laryngopharyngeal cancer: effects of a prospective smoking cessation program.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (XRT) is effective as the primary treatment modality for laryngopharyngeal cancer; however, complications of XRT can result in significant morbidity. Few previous studies have examined the effect of continued smoking on complications of XRT. The authors of this report hypothesized that patients with laryngopharyngeal cancer who successfully quit smoking would have fewer complications of primary XRT. METHODS: All patients with head and neck cancer who were smokers at the time of diagnosis were referred prospectively to the Tobacco Treatment Program (TTP). From this gro

[Esophageal replacement. 12 years experience].

UNLABELLED: Esophageal replacement is a surgical procedure rarely indicated in children. It is used in esophageal atresia type I and long-gap atresia when anastomosis is not possible, corrosive strictures and other unusual causes. Type and location of the graft depend on etiology and surgeon preferences. We analyse our results of a large series of esophageal replacement. METHODS: . We reviewed esophageal replacements carried out in our department between January-1992 and December-2004. We report 29 patients (15 girls and 14 boys) with ages ranging from 2 months until 14 years old (median 24 m

Role of CHOP in hepatic apoptosis in the murine model of intragastric ethanol feeding.

BACKGROUND: CHOP is a transcriptional regulator involved in apoptosis caused by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. We previously reported that CHOP as well as other ER stress response genes is induced in the liver of a murine model of intragastric ethanol feeding. This study was undertaken to determine the role of CHOP in hepatocellular apoptosis and liver injury in this model. METHODS: CHOP wild-type (+/+) mice and CHOP null (-/-) mice were fed alcohol for four weeks with glucose as control. Hematoxylin-eosin staining, TUNEL, and caspase 3 staining of liver tissues were performed for assessm

Whey predominant, whey modified infant formula with protein/energy ratio of 1.8 g/100 kcal: adequate and safe for term infants from birth to four months.

BACKGROUND: Protein quality of breast milk is superior to that of formula proteins. To ensure that the protein intake is sufficient, starter formulas with conventional protein composition provide a protein/energy ratio of 2.2-2.5 g per 100 kcal to infants, which is much higher than that supplied with breast milk. Several studies have shown that formula-fed infants have higher plasma or serum urea concentrations than breast-fed infants do. We tested if feeding formulas with improved protein quality and a protein content corresponding to the minimum level that is consistent with international re

Electrophysiological analyses of serotonergic actions on neurons in hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus in vitro: receptor subtypes involved and implications for regulation of feeding and lordosis behaviors.

Previously, we have shown that serotonin (5-HT) can inhibit, excite, or biphasically inhibit and excite individual neurons of the ventromedial nucleus (VMN) in hypothalamic slices from female rats. In the present study, similar in vitro methods were used to further characterize VMN neurons responsive to 5-HT, and to identify the receptor subtypes involved in mediating these 5-HT actions. Results from a dose-response experiment indicate that increasing the dose of 5-HT can transform an inhibitory response into a biphasic or even an excitatory response. This indicates that modulation of 5-HT rel

A copula-based geo-additive approach to childhood health outcomes in five West African nations.

BACKGROUND: Anemia and malnutrition are major contributors to child morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in West Africa where their prevalence remains high due to multifaceted socio-economic and environmental factors. Malnutrition, as defined by WHO, includes both undernutrition and overnutrition and is linked to increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Anemia, characterized by low hemoglobin levels, impairs oxygen transport and is associated with developmental delays and increased mortality in children. Given their interrelated nature, a joint modeling approach is e

Parents' perspectives and roles in influencing 10-12-year-old children's fruit and vegetable consumption: a qualitative study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Parents play a central role in shaping children's health behaviours and dietary habits. Previous research has provided insight into parents' feeding practices, especially regarding preschoolers. Less is known about how parents of 10-12-year-old children, whose fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake is particularly low relative to recommendations, perceive F&V and translate their intentions regarding F&V into everyday practices. This study explored parents' perspectives on F&V, their reasons for serving them, and their experiences of influencing their children's intake. METHODS: Fifteen

Phocaeicola dorei YGMCC0564 attenuates HFD-induced glycolipid metabolic disorders in association with remodeling of the gut microbiota and bile acid profiles.

BACKGROUND: Glycolipid Metabolic Disorders (GLMD) are characterized by imbalances in glucose and lipid homeostasis, often presenting with severe clinical symptoms. Current pharmacotherapies such as orlistat and metformin show clear efficacy but are associated with long-term tolerability concerns. This study aimed to evaluate whether the next-generation probiotic candidate Phocaeicola dorei YGMCC0564 attenuates HFD-induced glycolipid metabolic disturbances in mice. We hypothesized that the protective effect of YGMCC0564 would be associated with modulation of bile acid metabolism and may be part

ANXA1-FPR1 signaling in myeloid cells drives MASH by elevating S100A4/A11.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Inflammation plays a central role in the development of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) in myeloid cells emerges as a crucial factor associated with the inflammatory response; however, whether and how FPR1 signaling affects MASH development remain largely unknown. METHODS: Neutrophil-specific Fpr1 knockout mice and macrophage-specific Fpr1 knockout mice were generated, and subjected to high-fat high-cholesterol (HFHC, n = 6-10) or choline-deficient, L-amino acid-defined, high-fat diet (CDAHFD, n = 5-9) feeding. Nutritional Disorders and Their Clinical Impact in Older Adults With COVID-19: A Retrospective Study From Qatar.

Introduction Older adults were at a higher risk of developing nutritional disorders, hospitalization, and death because of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The burden of malnutrition and overnutrition in institutionalized older adults is a critical but under-researched factor of COVID-19 outcomes, particularly in the Middle East, where scarce data are available. The purpose of this study was to find out the prevalence of nutritional disorders among older patients with COVID-19 and to identify risk factors and clinical outcomes in Qatar. Methods A total of 55 adults aged over 60 years
