Popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm after isolated hyperextension of the knee.

We report an unusual case of a traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery after an isolated blunt hyperextension injury to the knee. A 56-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of left knee pain that occurred after a fall onto his buttocks with hyperextension of the knee while transferring a relative out of a wheelchair. A large pulsatile mass in the posterior aspect of the left knee was palpated on physical examination, although he had warm distal extremities and 2+ distal pulses bilaterally. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a 7.6 × 6.2 × 4.9 cm left popliteral artery pseu

A long-term follow-up study of the cementless THA with anatomic stem/HGPII cup with 22-mm head.

The anatomic femoral component and Harris-Galante porous II (HGPII) cup were developed to provide more reliable bone ingrowth. We performed 20 cementless total hip arthroplasties (THAs) with anatomic stem/HGPII cup with 22-mm head in 14 consecutive patients, and evaluated the clinical and radiological results for a mean follow-up of 12.8 years. The all-anatomically designed stem provided excellent clinical and radiographic results. Four acetabular components underwent revision: three for fracture of the locking mechanism and wear of the polyethylene liner and one for the locking mechanism fail

Femoral cement within cement technique in carefully selected aseptic revision arthroplasties.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological results in a group of patients who underwent aseptic revision hip arthroplasty using the cement within cement (CWC) technique. Between 1999 and 2005, 37 aseptic revision hip operations were performed. There were 30 women and five men, with an average age of 68 years. The reasons for revision were femoral stem fracture, cup failure, acetabular protrusion after hemi-arthroplasty and recurrent dislocation. At an average follow-up of 46 months, none of the patients required further femoral revision. The average post-operative Merl

Comparison of two different posterior approachs for hemiarthroplasty of the hip.

A prospective study was undertaken on 183 patients who had suffered a femoral neck fracture between 1998 and 1999. The aim was to compare the complication rates for the classical posterior approach and the modified posterior approach. The modified posterior approach used was the one described by Williams et al., which preserved the pyriformis, the labrum and the capsule. Group 1 included 95 patients, who were operated on by the posterior approach. Group 2 included 88 patients, who were operated on by the modified posterior approach. The dislocation rate for the posterior approach was 7.4% (7 c

Open posterior dislocation of the lumbosacral junction. A case report.

STUDY DESIGN: A patient with open posterior dislocation of the lumbosacral junction is reported. OBJECTIVES: Treatment with primary anterior open reduction with internal fixation followed by delayed posterior stabilization and fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: This injury has been reported previously on two occasions; however, anterior stabilization was not used. In this case, anterior fixation was necessary because of the posterior soft tissue contamination. METHODS: After an anterior open reduction of L5-S1, stabilization was performed using instrumentation. Posterior wound care was the

Modified technique for tibial tubercle elevation with realignment for patellofemoral pain. A preliminary report.

Malalignment of the quadriceps mechanism was corrected and the tibial tuberosity elevated in 17 knees in 16 patients without the use of a free bone graft. The indications for operation were patellofemoral pain unresponsive to conservative treatment, recurrent subluxation or dislocation of the patella, and patients who had had a previous patellectomy with subsequent lateral subluxation of the patella tendon associated with pain. A bone block including the attachment of the patellar tendon is transposed medially to correct the quadriceps angle (Q-angle), elevate the tibial tuberosity, and thereb

Distraction rod stabilization in the treatment of metastatic carcinoma.

Stabilization of the spinal column with Harrington distraction rods and acrylic fusion was the primary form of treatment in a select group of patients with metastatic carcinoma of the spinal column. Clinical criteria included patients in poor general medical condition with intractable pain originating from metastatic tumor involvement in the ventral components of the thoracic or upper lumbar spinal column and minimal evidence or absence of spinal cord compression. After stabilization, pain relief was almost total and sustained, and neurological status generally remained unchanged from preopera

[Injuries of the posterior and lateral chest wall-importance of an additional clavicular fracture].

BACKGROUND: Flail chest wall injuries (FCI) are common in younger patients due to high-speed trauma and in older patients due to low-energy trauma or falls from a low height. They show a high incidence of concomitant injuries and are therefore associated with high morbidity and mortality. If there is also an ipsilateral clavicular fracture (CF), the outcome is significantly poorer. The skeleton of the shoulder and chest loses stability and can lead to a loss of function of the shoulder and a pronounced deformation of the chest wall. OBJECTIVE: This article shows the origin and clinical import

Intraoperative 3D imaging in the treatment of elbow fractures--a retrospective analysis of indications, intraoperative revision rates, and implications in 36 cases.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) imaging with a mobile C-arm has proven to be a valuable intraoperative tool in trauma surgery. However, little data is available concerning its use in the treatment of elbow fractures. The aim of the current study was to determine the intraoperative findings and consequences of 3D imaging in the treatment of elbow fractures. METHODS: Between 2001 and 2015, prospectively collected data of 36 patients who underwent intraoperative 3D imaging during elbow surgery were recorded. The findings and consequences of the intraoperative 3D scans were analyzed in a retro

Iatrogenic traumatic brain injury: penetration of Kirschner's knitting needle into the middle cranial cavity.

Traumatic penetrations of foreign objects into the craniocerebral cavity are often encountered in the department of emergency and traumatology. A 5-year-old child was brought to the department of pediatric neurosurgery with a severe headache and fatigue. On admission, the patient had initial neurologic examinations and radiologic scans. The consciousness assessment by Glasgow Coma Scale was 13. Neuroradiologic studies revealed a long hyperdense object extending from the extracranial cavity into the middle cranial fossa. A thorough history was obtained with attention to how and when the injury
