Dermatophytoses are superficial skin infections due to dermatophytes which are filamentous fungi. Some dermatophytes can be hosted by domestic animals. In Belgium, Microsporum canis, Trichophyton (T.) mentagrophytes variety mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum and T. equinum are zoophilic species capable of infecting humans. Under iron-starvation conditions of growth, Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, a soil isolate involved in phytopathogenic fungi antagonisms, produced, together with pyoverdine, a second iron-chelating compound which was purified and identified by spectroscopy, HPLC and 1H-NMR to be salicylic acid. Twenty children (mean age 9 weeks) with infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis (ISD) were investigated with cultures for bacteria, Pityrosporum ovale and other fungi, and 20 healthy children served as controls. During a retrospective survey of patients with pulmonary shadows and blood eosinophilia between the years 1965 and 1980, 42 patients were found with allergic bronchopulmonary fungal disease. Eleven of these had no clinical evidence of asthma. Three of these 11 had hypersensitivity to fungi other than Aspergillus sp. Review of 3,084 autopsies from 1967 to 1977 at Grady Memorial Hospital Yielded 14 cases of myocardial abscess unassociated with infective endocarditis acceptable for our study. During a two year period, March 1977 to April 1979, a total of 92 bovine abortions were studied. The cause of abortion was determined in 34.8% of the cases examined. Opportunistic bacteria, the most commonly diagnosed cause of abortion, accounted for 31.2% of the cases.
