Chemotherapy treatment and autologous and allogeneic cell transplantations are often complicated by the onset of metabolic and endocrine disorders. Autoimmune disorders, metabolic diseases, and hormonal dysfunctions are some of the endocrine complications observed during or after treatment with immunotherapy (mostly novel agents) and/or chemotherapy conditioning for transplantation. Although successful treatment of the underlying hematological condition often improves the dysfunction, endocrinopathies can have an impact on prognosis and are associated with poor survival; therefore, it is impor

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) supports spermatogenesis acting via its receptor (FSHR), which activates trophic effects in gonadal Sertoli cells. These pathways are targeted by hormonal drugs used for clinical treatment of infertile men, mainly belonging to sub-groups defined as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or idiopathic infertility. While, in the first case, fertility may be efficiently restored by specific treatments, such as pulsatile gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) or choriogonadotropin (hCG) alone or in combination with FSH, less is known about the efficacy of FSH in supporting

Klinefelter syndrome is highly underdiagnosed and diagnosis is often delayed. With the introduction of non-invasive prenatal screening, the diagnostic pattern will require an updated description of the clinical and biochemical presentation of infants with Klinefelter syndrome. In the first months of life, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG)-axis is transiently activated in healthy males during the so-called minipuberty. This period represents a "window of opportunity" for evaluation of the HPG-axis before puberty and without stimulation tests. Infants with Klinefelter syndrome present wit

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 17α-hydroxylase deficiency, a rare CAH syndrome, is characterised by failure to synthetise cortisol, adrenal androgens and gonadal steroids. The partial deficiency is much rarer, presenting with subtler symptoms. Failure to reach a proper diagnosis causes inappropriate hypertension treatment and impairs the development of secondary sexual characteristics. We report a case of a 30-year-old woman transferred to an endocrinology clinic for evaluation of autoimmune thyroiditis. She was started on oral contraceptives at the age of 13 due to oligomenorrhea

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), one of the most common causes of hair loss in men and women, is an infrequent cause of alopecia in children. In AGA, patients generally start noticing hair thinning after the onset of puberty due to progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicle which leads to vellus transformation of terminal hair. However, the occurrence of prepubertal AGA has rarely been reported in the literature. The pathophysiology of AGA is tightly linked to androgen hormones; prepubertal children do not usually produce significant amounts of adrenal or gonadal androgens. When it does occu

Hyperprolactinaemia is one of the most common problems in clinical endocrinology. It relates with various aetiologies (physiological, pharmacological, pathological), the clarification of which requires careful history taking and clinical assessment. Analytical issues (presence of macroprolactin or of the hook effect) need to be taken into account when interpreting the prolactin values. Medications and sellar/parasellar masses (prolactin secreting or acting through "stalk effect") are the most common causes of pathological hyperprolactinaemia. Hypogonadism and galactorrhoea are well-recognized

Cytogenetic examination may be useful in determining the reason for primary amenorrhea in phenotypically female patients. The result 46, XY usually indicates two syndromes: complete androgen insensitivity or pure gonadal dysgenesis. We report a case of a patient, who due to acute lymphoblastic leukemia in childhood was treated with total body irradiation and bone marrow transplantation. Later on the patient presented with symptoms typical for premature ovarian failure and male karyotype in peripheral lymphocytes. The cytogenetic examination for peripheral cells showed normal female karyotype.

The data presented here are related to the research article entitled "Overexpression of Perilipin1 protects against atheroma progression in apolipoprotein E knockout mice" [1]. This paper describes data that were obtained from perilipin 1 (PLIN1) transgenic mice (Plin1Tg) regarding atherosclerosis. The main aim of collecting the data was to clarify the role of PLIN1 in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. The data were collected from C57BL/6J mice, apolipoprotein E knockout mice (ApoeKO) and Plin1Tg/ApoeKO. The atherosclerotic lesion areas of aorta were 3.3 ± 1.2% in C57BL/6J mice, 14.2 ± 3

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogenous endocrine disorder with typical symptoms of oligomenorrhoea, hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, obesity, insulin resistance and increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Extensive evidence indicates that PCOS is a genetic disease and numerous biochemical pathways have been linked with its pathogenesis. A number of genes from these pathways have been investigated, which include those involved with steroid hormone biosynthesis and metabolism, action of gonadotropin and gonadal hormones, folliculogenesis, obesity and energy regulation, insulin secret

Apoptosis is widely known to play a major role on diseases related to male infertility. Diseases of the male genital tract as defective spermatogenesis, decreased sperm motility, sperm DNA fragmentation, testicular torsion, varicocele and immunological infertility are strongly related to apoptotic cell death. Apoptosis must not be considered only as a fail on germ cell physiology or a secondary effect of certain pathologies and exogenous hazardous agents. Apoptosis orchestrates correct function and development of the male germ cell from the early embryonic stages of gonadal differentiation to

X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) is a rare disorder that usually presents clinically as adrenal insufficiency in early infancy. It is caused by mutations in the NR0B1 gene which is located on the short arm of chromosome X (Xp21). The NR0B1 gene plays an important role in normal development and function of both the adrenal and gonadal axes and some patients with the disease can present in adolescence with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Testicular microlithiasis is an ultrasonographic finding of unknown etiology that has been associated with several benign conditions such as cryptorch

Carney complex is a rare, autosomal dominant, multiple endocrine neoplasia and lentiginosis syndrome, caused in most patients by defects in the PRKAR1A gene, which encodes the regulatory subunit type 1α of protein kinase A. Inactivating defects of PRKAR1A lead to aberrant cyclic-AMP-protein kinase A signaling. Patients may develop multiple skin abnormalities and a variety of endocrine and non-endocrine tumors. Endocrine manifestations include primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease, that may cause Cushing syndrome, growth-hormone secreting pituitary adenoma or pituitary somatotropic h

The presence of endocrine-derived compounds in the environment occurs due to a myriad of human or industrial activity and can disrupt the endocrine system of animals, including fish. One important group of endocrine disruptors are the estrogens, such as 17-β estradiol (E2, estradiol). Estrogens are gonadal steroid hormones, able to be influential even in small concentrations. Here, we demonstrate that E2 is linked to female' decisions made by an important coral reef species, the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus, during interactions with other reef fishes (known as clients). Thanks to the advances in cancer treatment, the five-year survival rate after childhood cancer has increased up to 80%. Therefore 1/500 young adults will be a survivor. Endocrine sequelae are most common, affecting 40-60% of survivors. The most frequent sequelae include growth failure and gonadal and thyroid diseases. Sequelae occur more frequently in survivors from central nervous system tumors, leukemia, and lymphoma. Their development will depend on the type of cancer, its location, age at diagnosis, and treatment administered. Treatments associated to more endocrine sequels are cranial rad

Disorders/differences of sex development (DSD) comprise multiple congenital conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, and/or anatomical sex are discordant. The prediction of future gender identity (i.e., self-identifying as male, female, or other) in children with DSD can be imprecise, and current knowledge about the development of gender identity in people with, and without DSD, is limited. However, sex of rearing is the strongest predictor of gender identity for the majority of individuals with various DSD conditions. When making decisions regarding sex of rearing biological factors (e.g., p

Congenital cataract disease is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous lens disorder. The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic defects and to investigate the relationships between disease-causing genes and lens morphology in congenital cataracts. Patients were given a physical examination, and their blood samples were collected for DNA extraction. Mutation analysis was performed by direct sequencing of the following candidate genes: CRYGC, CRYGD, CRYGS, GJA8, GJA3 and CRYAA. Mutational analysis of CRYGD identified a recurrent (p.P24T) mutation in two unrelated families with con

Adipokines are cytokines produced mainly by adipose tissue, besides many other tissues such as placenta, ovaries, peripheral-blood mononuclear cells, liver, muscle, kidney, heart, and bone marrow. Adipokines play a significant role in the metabolic syndrome and in cardiovascular diseases, have implications in regulating insulin sensitivity and inflammation, and have significant effects on growth and reproductive function. The objective of this review was to analyze the functions known today of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, and visfatin from placenta throughout childhood and adolescence. It is

TSH, FSH and LH share the same glycoprotein alpha chain (CGA) as part of their protein structure. Therefore, it is possible that thyroid and gonadal dysfunction may affect the CGA expression. This study evaluated several steps of CGA synthesis and secretion in thyrotrophs and gonadotrophs of control and hypothyroid rats, acutely or chronically-treated with T3. Hypothyroidism increased the Cga mRNA expression and its association to ribosome, but decreased intracellular CGA content. These parameters were reversed after acute or chronic T3 treatment. We conclude that T3 not only down-regulates Cg

Double inferior vena cava (d-IVC) is a subtype of vascular anomaly that rarely needs treatment. Here, we present a rare case of d-IVC accompanied with concurrent renal pelvis and bladder carcinoma. Due to misdiagnosis, the anomalous left inferior vena cava (IVC) entering the left renal vein was mistaken as the gonadal vein and was then severed during the radical nephroureterectomy. Fortunately, the injured left IVC was recognized correctly during the following cystectomy. The vascular reconstruction operation was performed to recanalize the left iliac veins by anastomosing the ligated vascular

Testicular torsion is a urological emergency most commonly seen in adolescence, involving a decrease in blood flow in the testis resulting from torsion of the spermatic cord that can result in gonad injury or even loss if not treated in time. Testicular ischaemia-reperfusion injury represents the principle pathophysiology of testicular torsion, with ischaemia caused by twisting of the spermatic cord, and reperfusion on its subsequent release. Many cellular and molecular mechanisms are involved in ischaemia-reperfusion injury following testicular torsion. Studies have investigated the use of ph
