A prospective study of faecal colonization with P-fimbriated Escherichia coli between 0 and 18 months of age was conducted in 751 healthy infants. The influence of breast-feeding and treatment with antibiotics on this colonization was studied. Colonization with P-fimbriated E. coli increased with age from 10% at 6 days to 30% at 18 months of age (P less than 0.01). Breast-feeding influenced colonization at 6 weeks of age when breast-fed children harboured fewer bacterial species (P less than 0.001) and fewer P-fimbriated E. coli (P = 0.06) than bottle-fed infants. To determine whether antimicrobial synergism affects the outcome of gram-negative bacteremia among profoundly (less than 100/microliter) neutropenic cancer patients, the clinical courses of 75 such patients who received empiric therapy with combination, broad-spectrum antibiotics were analyzed. We studied 192 recent clinical isolates, comprising six species of Gram-negative bacilli resistant either to cefotaxime or latamoxef (Moxalactam), from several hospitals. All isolates were resistant to several other third-generation cephalosporins or a monobactam. Anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections usually arise from aspiration of oral bacteria. The degree of virulence depends on host factors, especially state of tissue oxygenation, and on size of inoculum. Fetid sputum, if present, frequently is diagnostic. Use of penicillin G is preferred therapy for all forms of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infection.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus that colonizes the aerodigestive tracts of cats, dogs, birds, and wild animals. This veterinary pathogen spreads to humans via licking, biting, or scratching. Pekin ducks are known carriers of multiple strains of Pasteurella bacteria that can manifest as fowl cholera, eye infection, or duck septicemia. This bacterium is a farmer's nightmare, as it is associated with high mortality rates. Herein, we report a unique case of P. multocida bacteremia in an immunocompetent host that shared a house with adopted Pekin ducks.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a pathogenic species of bacteria, identified as an aerobic gram-negative bacterium, that is resistant to most antibiotics. In this study, the MDR-TJ strain was isolated at the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, China, and was found to be resistant to penicillin, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, quinolones, and also imipenem. The genome sequence of Acinetobacter baumannii strain MDR-TJ was determined by using a combination of 454 pyrosequencing and paired-end sequencing performed with the Roche Genome Sequencer FLX system to generate a scaffolded assembly.

During the years 1978 and 1979 there has been a marked change in the proportion of bacteria isolated from dental infections compared with the ten year period to 1978. There has been a reduction in the proportion of streptococci found and an increase in the proportion of the Gram negative species encountered. There has been a steady decline in the effectiveness of penicillin although this has to some extent been offset by the introduction and widespread use of amoxycillin. The greatest change in antibiotic sensitivity has been the reduction in sensitivity to the tetracyclines.
