Parent versus child report of children's sexual orientation: associations with psychiatric morbidity in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

PURPOSE: We sought to document the association between parent's report and their child's report of the child's sexual orientation and associations between this agreement/disagreement and the child's psychiatric morbidity. METHODS: Data were drawn from 11,565 parent-child dyads who completed the baseline assessment of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (2016-2018; children ages 9-10 years). Whether the child was "gay or bisexual" was asked separately of parent and child. We created four categories: (1) Concordant No; (2) Discordant: Parent Yes/Maybe, Child No/Unclear; (3) Discord

How Doctors' Beliefs Influence Gynecological Health Care for Women Who Have Sex with Other Women.

Background: Women who occasionally or regularly have sex with other women (WSW) are rarely identified in primary care. Although we know about their specific health needs, health care professionals still find it difficult to ask questions about sexual orientation (SO) and behaviors, and sometimes, patients may find them difficult to answer. The presumption of heterosexuality still remains a widespread attitude in health care. This study took place in a primary care setting, and aimed to identify differences in gynecological health care and clinical practice for women, according to what their pr

Mixing and Matching: Sperm Donor Selection for Interracial Lesbian Couples.

The widespread use of assisted reproductive technologies, coupled with processes of demographic and social change, are contributing to the normalization of new family configurations that extend beyond biological kinship. Non-traditional families, increasingly prevalent due to interracial and same-sex marriages, challenge normative expectations of family resemblance between siblings, parents and children. Interviews with interracial lesbian couples about their selection of a sperm donor reveal that despite the new forms of relatedness that non-traditional families enable, within the use of repr

Contextualizing Competence: Language and LGBT-Based Competency in Health Care.

Changes in the language and terminology used to refer to individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), as well as how best to discuss issues of sexual and gender identity, can prove challenging for health care providers due to (1) lack of training; (2) interdisciplinary issues; and (3) prejudices on personal and institutional levels. Given the importance of language in the relationship between health care provider and patient as well as the myriad ways in which language can reflect knowledge, skills, and attitudes, we contend that language is both a facilitator and

[Requests for assisted reproduction formulated by same-sex couples consulting physicians in France].

BACKGROUND, MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to determine the characteristic features of requests for assisted reproduction formulated by same-sex couples consulting physicians in France, we conducted a study in collaboration with professional organizations, general practitioners, gynecologists and obstetricians who distributed an email questionnaire among their recruitment. RESULTS: In our sample, 191 physicians (71% of responders) reported that 1040 homosexual couples expressed desire to become parents in 2011-2012. Nearly all of the physicians (94%) reported that the couples sought assistanc

Substance use in lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations: an update on empirical research and implications for treatment.

Historically, substance use problems were thought to be more prevalent in lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations, and correcting skewed perceptions about substance abuse among LGB individuals is critically important. This review provides an update on empirical evidence on LGB substance use patterns and treatment outcome, with specific focus on clinical implications of findings. Compared to earlier studies, the recent research included in this review has used more sophisticated methodologies and more representative samples, and also has investigated multiple dimensions of sexual orientati

Anal sexually transmitted infections and risk of HIV infection in homosexual men.

BACKGROUND: We examined a range of common bacterial and viral sexually transmitted infections as risk factors for HIV seroconversion in a community-based cohort of HIV-negative homosexual men in Sydney, Australia. METHODS: Detailed information about HIV risk behaviors was collected by interview twice yearly. Participants were tested annually for HIV, anal and urethral gonorrhea and chlamydia, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and syphilis. In addition, they reported annual diagnoses of these conditions and of genital and anal warts. RESULTS: Among 1427 enrolled participants, 53 HIV serocon

HIV epidemiology and the effects of antiviral therapy on long-term consequences.

Twenty-seven years have now elapsed since the first description of AIDS in homosexual men in San Francisco, USA. Since those early reports in 1981, millions of people have died from this disease and millions are living with HIV infection worldwide. The rate of new cases of HIV infection has stabilized in some parts of the developed world, but in other areas of the world, especially in Africa, south-east Asia and eastern Europe, the number of newly infected individuals continues to rise alarmingly. Despite international commitment, there is still much to be done to improve access to antiretrovi

Research, curricula, and resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health in US schools of public health.

To assess the extent to which public health schools conduct research, offer planned curricula, and provide resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health, we mailed a self-administered questionnaire to individual department chairpersons at each school. Survey results suggested that departmental lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender research and curricular activities extending beyond HIV and AIDS were uncommon in most public health school programs. Expanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health research and curricula may help health professionals improve their r

AIDS-related illness trajectories in Mexico: findings from a qualitative study in two marginalized communities.

This paper describes findings from a recent study examining how people affected directly and indirectly by the HIV/AIDS epidemic cope with HIV-related illness in Mexico. One-hundred-and-thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants in two contrasting communities: Ciudad Netzahualcóyotl (an economically marginalized community) and the gay community in Mexico City (a sexually marginalized community). This paper describes the AIDS-related wellness/illness careers or trajectories followed by individuals in both communities, and identifies critical points for material and emotiona

Lesbian battering: the relationship between personality and the perpetration of violence.

The occurrence of violence in lesbian relationships challenges societal stereotypes of women and traditional, sociopolitical theories of domestic violence. This article proposes that a multidimensional theory of partner abuse, which incorporates an emphasis on individual personality dynamics, is needed to more fully understand the heterogeneity of batterers. The relationship between psychopathology, sociocultural factors, and battering in lesbian relationships is examined and dynamics related to the borderline and narcissistic disorders are highlighted. In order to improve our understanding of

Duration of illness and neuropsychological performance in asymptomatic HIV infection.

The relationship between duration of illness and neuropsychological performance was examined in 25 asymptomatic HIV-infected men with an estimated date of seroconversion. Mean duration of illness was approximately 2 years. After controlling for CD4 level at the time of neuropsychological examination, duration of illness was correlated with measures of visual attention, mental flexibility, dexterity, auditory information processing, and response fluency, as well as an overall measure of neuropsychological performance. Although these patients performed within normal limits, these data suggest th

Coming out and AIDS-related high-risk sexual behavior.

How the withdrawal of social support associated with the coming out of gay men influences AIDS-related sexual risk-taking among Flemish (Belgian) gay men is analyzed. Recruited via key persons, the 379 gay men in this nonclinical cohort completed a lengthy, computerized questionnaire dealing with diverse aspects of gay life and culture. Independent variables include demographic characteristics, AIDS knowledge, coming-out histories, six social support dimensions, and personal resources. The dependent variables were insertive and receptive anal intercourse with and without a condom. Stepwise reg

Graduate nursing students' attitudes toward gay and hemophiliac men with AIDS.

Subjects were 180 registered nurses enrolled in a master's nursing program. By random assignment, each read one of six versions of a vignette about a male patient. Vignettes differed in terms of patient's diagnosis (AIDS of unspecified origin, AIDS in a hemophiliac infected by blood transfusion, and leukemia) and sexual preference (gay or heterosexual). Nurses evaluated the patient on two scales, one involving judgments of patients and the other concerning willingness to interact socially with them. The hemophiliac/AIDS and leukemia patients were judged significantly less responsible for and l

Behavioral characteristics and laboratory parameters in homo- and bisexual men in West Berlin: an evaluation of five years of testing and counselling on AIDS.

Sera of 1980 homo- and bisexual men who visited the Landesinstitut für Tropenmedizin Berlin (West) between April 1983 and December 1987 were tested for HIV antibodies; 24.3% were positive. Of HIV-antibody-positive men, 78.9% reported both active and passive anal intercourse, 58.8%, rectal enemas, and 53.3%, use of butyl nitrite. There was a sexual partner with known positive HIV-antibody status or AIDS in 33.9%, and in 32.4% there was a history of sexual activity in the USA. In the year before the test, 18.8% had had more than 50 partners. All these behavioral characteristics were found to be
