Human monkeypox: confusion with chickenpox.

Human monkeypox is a zoonosis occurring sporadically in the tropical rain forest of western and central Africa. The exact incidence and geographical distribution are unknown, since many cases are not recognized. Special surveillance was established in three regions in Zaire in 1981 that led to a substantial increase in reported cases. The question arose as to the possibility that clinical diagnostic errors cause some cases of monkeypox to be misdiagnosed as other eruptive diseases. This paper presents the results of a study assessing the extent of and reasons for these clinical diagnostic erro

Expression of major histocompatibility complex class I and class II antigens in human Schwann cell cultures and effects of infection with Mycobacterium leprae.

Recent experiments on rats have raised the possibility that Schwann cells can present antigens to T lymphocytes. We have investigated whether this mechanism might be relevant in leprosy by determining under what conditions human Schwann cells express class I and class II antigens, and whether infection with Mycobacterium leprae affects this expression. The distribution of these antigens was examined on human Schwann cells in dissociated cell cultures derived from human fetal peripheral nerves. We find that both Schwann cells and fibroblastic cells in these cultures normally express class I ant

Postprandial lipemia induces pancreatic α cell dysfunction characteristic of type 2 diabetes: studies in healthy subjects, mouse pancreatic islets, and cultured pancreatic α cells.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is associated with pancreatic α cell dysfunction, characterized by elevated fasting plasma glucagon concentrations and inadequate postprandial glucose- and insulin-induced suppression of glucagon secretion. The cause and the underlying mechanisms of α cell dysfunction are unknown. OBJECTIVE: Because Western dietary habits cause postprandial lipemia for a major part of a day and, moreover, increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, we tested the hypothesis that postprandial lipemia with its characteristic elevation of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TGRLs) mig

Trophoblastic cells of the hydatidiform mole contain a beta 1-subtype adrenergic receptor.

Both beta 1- and beta 2-adrenergic receptors have been previously described in normal human placental homogenates; the cells upon whose surface membranes these receptors reside have not been identified. In order to show that a beta 1-adrenergic receptor is present on trophoblastic cells, the cells which mediate maternal-fetal transport and produce placental hormones, beta-adrenergic receptors were demonstrated in membrane fractions of human hydatidiform mole. Microscopic sections of the mole samples used demonstrated edematous villi lined by trophoblastic cells with minimal nontrophoblastic (s

Assist-as-Needed Hip Exoskeleton Control for Gait Asymmetry Correction via Human-in-the-Loop Optimization.

Gait asymmetry is a significant clinical characteristic of hemiplegic gait that most stroke survivors suffer, leading to limited mobility and long-term negative impacts on their quality of life. Although a variety of exoskeleton controls have been developed for robot-aided gait rehabilitation, little attention has been paid to correcting the gait asymmetry of stroke patients, and it remains challenging to properly share control between the exoskeleton and patients with partial motor control. In view of this, an assist-as-needed (AAN) hip exoskeleton control with human-in-the-loop optimization

A thiosemicarbazone-based dinuclear copper(II) complex: potent antiproliferative activity, distinct cell-type-specific anticancer mechanisms and robust in vivo antitumor efficacy.

A feasible way to avoid chemoresistance in cancer therapy is to endow a single drug with multiple anticancer mechanisms. In this work, we propose that a multinuclear metal complex may be a promising drug candidate when its metal centers possess different coordination environments. Our proposal has been demonstrated by our studies on a dinuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu2LCl2(H2O)] (1, H2L = 2,2'-Bis[1-(2-pyrazinyl)ethylidene]carbonothioic dihydrazide), in which the two Cu centers adopt square planar tetracoordination and square pyramidal pentacoordination, respectively. Such a characteristic structur

The Porcine Colitis Model Recapitulates the Visceral Adipose Metabolic Reprogramming of Human Ulcerative Colitis.

Adipose tissue dysfunction is integral to the pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis (UC), yet the conservation of adipose immunometabolic responses across species remains unclear. Here, we employed a comparative transcriptomic approach to analyze adipose remodeling in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced porcine and murine colitis models alongside human UC datasets. We report that intestinal inflammation induced widespread adipocyte atrophy and triggered a convergent inflammatory response across physiologically distinct visceral and subcutaneous depots. Mechanistically, this remodeling was def

Psychedelic studies in nonhuman primates: Past and future.

Studies of serotonergic or 'classic' psychedelics in nonhuman primates (NHPs) have provided valuable information about the drugs' effects on the brain and behavior in closely related species to humans. Psychedelics induce characteristic changes to both spontaneous and operant behaviors in NHPs, though variability exists in the different effects reported by different studies; this variability could be due to factors like differences across drugs, differences in dose ranges across studies, and inter-individual variability in drug responsiveness. Several effects of psychedelics in NHPs mirror tho

A review of emerging health threats from zoonotic New World mammarenaviruses.

Despite repeated spillover transmission and their potential to cause significant morbidity and mortality in human hosts, the New World mammarenaviruses remain largely understudied. These viruses are endemic to South America, with animal reservoir hosts covering large geographic areas and whose transmission ecology and spillover potential are driven in part by land use change and agriculture that put humans in regular contact with zoonotic hosts. We compiled published studies about Guanarito virus, Junin virus, Machupo virus, Chapare virus, Sabia virus, and Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis virus to

Glenohumeral joint trajectory tracking for improving the shoulder compliance of the upper limb rehabilitation robot.

BACKGROUND: Exoskeletons have become an important tool to help patients with upper extremity motor dysfunction in rehabilitation training and life assistance. In the study of the upper limb exoskeleton, the human glenohumeral joint will produce accompanying movement during the movement of the shoulder joint. This phenomenon causes a positional deviation between the shoulder joint and the exoskeleton, which affects the accuracy of exoskeleton-assisted human movement and the wearing comfort. Spend. METHOD: Taking the coronal adduction and abduction of the shoulder joint as the research object,

In Silico Analysis of a Candidate Multi-epitope Peptide Vaccine Against Human Brucellosis.

Brucellosis is one of the neglected endemic zoonoses in the world. Vaccination appears to be a promising health strategy to prevent it. This study used advanced computational techniques to develop a potent multi-epitope vaccine for human brucellosis. Seven epitopes from four main brucella species that infect humans were selected. They had significant potential to induce cellular and humoral responses. They showed high antigenic ability without the allergenic characteristic. In order to improve its immunogenicity, suitable adjuvants were also added to the structure of the vaccine. The physicoch

The effective factors in human-specific tropism and viral pathogenicity in orthopoxviruses.

The orthopoxvirus (OPV) genus includes several species that infect humans, including variola, monkeypox, vaccinia, and cowpox. Variola and monkeypox are often life-threatening diseases, while vaccinia and cowpox are usually associated with local lesions. The epidemic potential for OPVs may be lower than respiratory-borne viruses or RNA viruses. However, OPVs are notable for their spread and distribution in different environments and among different hosts. The emergence or re-emergence of OPVs in the human population can also occur in wild or domestic animals as intermediate hosts. More effecti

Detection and classification of unilateral cleft alveolus with and without cleft palate on panoramic radiographs using a deep learning system.

Although panoramic radiography has a role in the examination of patients with cleft alveolus (CA), its appearances is sometimes difficult to interpret. The aims of this study were to develop a computer-aided diagnosis system for diagnosing the CA status on panoramic radiographs using a deep learning object detection technique with and without normal data in the learning process, to verify its performance in comparison to human observers, and to clarify some characteristic appearances probably related to the performance. The panoramic radiographs of 383 CA patients with cleft palate (CA with CP

Development of a Subtyping Tool for Zoonotic Pathogen Cryptosporidium canis.

Cryptosporidium canis is an important cause of cryptosporidiosis in canines and humans. Studies of the transmission characteristics of C. canis are currently hampered by the lack of suitable subtyping tools. In this study, we conducted a genomic survey of the pathogen and developed a subtyping tool targeting the partial 60-kDa glycoprotein gene (gp60). Seventy-six isolates previously identified as C. canis were analyzed using the new subtyping tool. Amplicons of the expected size were obtained from 49 isolates, and phylogenetic analysis identified 10 subtypes clustered into five distinct group

Use of Streptozotocin in Rodent Models of Islet Transplantation.

Streptozotocin (STZ) selectively destroys beta cells and is widely used to induce experimental diabetes in rodents. Rodent beta cells are very sensitive to the toxic effects of STZ, while human beta cells are highly resistant to STZ. Taking advantage of this characteristic, here, we describe two protocols for the induction of STZ-diabetes. In the first model, hyperglycemia is induced prior to islet transplantation, whereas in the second model, STZ is injected after islet transplantation. The former model has many applications and thus is the most commonly used method. However, when implanting

Reliable Postmortem Molecular Diagnosis of Anaphylaxis: Co-localization of Mast Cell Degranulation and Immunoglobulin E in Allergic Throat Tissues.

Anaphylaxis is a serious reaction that may cause death in half an hour without diagnostic characteristic in autopsies. Mast cell (MC) degranulation combined with immunoglobulin E (IgE) plays the key roles in anaphylaxis. Unavailability of serum and instability of measured serum in postmortem diagnoses sometimes limit the opinion of medical experts. Allergic tissues are more accessible than serum, and there is a little research on degranulated mast cells and IgE in different human tissues, whereas we hardly know whether the expression will keep stable over the increasing postmortem interval (PM

The chinchilla animal model for hearing science and noise-induced hearing loss.

The chinchilla animal model for noise-induced hearing loss has an extensive history spanning more than 50 years. Many behavioral, anatomical, and physiological characteristics of the chinchilla make it a valuable animal model for hearing science. These include similarities with human hearing frequency and intensity sensitivity, the ability to be trained behaviorally with acoustic stimuli relevant to human hearing, a docile nature that allows many physiological measures to be made in an awake state, physiological robustness that allows for data to be collected from all levels of the auditory sy

Construction of ratiometric hydrogen sulfide probe with two reaction sites and its applications in solution and in live cells.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as the third multifunctional signaling biomolecule, it acts as a neuromodulator in the human brain and is recognized as an important gas transmitter in human physiology. The abnormal concentrations of H2S in human cells can result in several common diseases. Therefore, accurate, fast, and reliable methodologies are required for measuring the in vitro and in vivo concentrations of H2S to further investigate its function. In this study, a novel DR-SO2N3 fluorescent probe containing the fluorophore Disperse Red 277 and a sulfonyl azide group was developed and exploited bas

Radiostrontium transport in plants and phytoremediation.

Radiostrontium is a common product of nuclear fission and was emitted into the environment in the course of nuclear weapon tests as well as from nuclear reactor accidents. The release of 90Sr and 89Sr into the environment can pose health threats due to their characteristics such as high specific activities and easy access in human body due to its chemical analogy to calcium. Radiostrontium enters the human food chain by the consumption of plants grown on sites comprising fission-derived radionuclides. For humans, Sr is not an essential element, but, due to solubility in water and homology with
