Concerns over food safety arising from conventional plastic and resin-based corrosion barriers cannot be underestimated, particularly in light of the potential for plasticizer migration. We introduce an environmental-friendly and sustainable approach to develop superhydrophobic and anticorrosion coatings. This involved a unique process where glutenin, post-reduction with tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine, underwent a phase transition, naturally adhering to diverse surfaces to form a foundational primer. The core mechanism of this adhesion lied the β-sheet stacking configuration, confirmed by grazi

Dengue virus (DENV) is a continuing global threat that puts half of the world's population at risk for infection. This mosquito-transmitted virus is endemic in over 100 countries. When a mosquito takes a bloodmeal, virus is deposited into the epidermal and dermal layers of human skin, infecting a variety of permissive cells, including keratinocytes, Langerhans cells, macrophages, dermal dendritic cells, fibroblasts, and mast cells. In response to infection, the skin deploys an array of defense mechanisms to inhibit viral replication and prevent dissemination. Antimicrobial peptides, pattern re

In recent years, the function of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) as regulatory molecules of cell physiology has begun to be better understood. Advances in viral molecular biology have shown that host ncRNAs, cellular factors, and virus-derived ncRNAs and their interplay are strongly disturbed during viral infections. Nevertheless, the folding of RNA virus genomes has also been identified as a critical factor in regulating canonical and non-canonical functions. Due to the influence of host ncRNAs and the structure of RNA viral genomes, complex molecular and cellular processes in infections are modulate

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) establishes persistent latent infections by effectively evading the host's antiviral innate immune response. PRV has developed sophisticated strategies to bypass immune surveillance through coevolution with its host. Currently, no effective vaccine exists to prevent or treat infections caused by emerging PRV variants, and the interactions between PRV and the host's innate immune defenses remain incompletely understood. Nevertheless, ongoing research is uncovering insights that may lead to novel treatments and preventive approaches for herpesvirus-related diseases. This

INTRODUCTION: Italian Cystic Fibrosis Registry (ICFR) collects data of people with cystic fibrosis through the collaboration with Italian CF referral and support Centres (Italian law 548/93). It aims at analysing medium and long-term clinical and epidemiological trends, identifying healthcare needs at regional and national levels, contributing to healthcare programs and resource allocation (sharing the population of FC centres with the Ministry of Health). Finally, the RIFC shares some of its data with the Italian Medicines Agency (Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco, AIFA) to better define the numbe

Legionella pneumophila is an environmentally acquired pathogen that causes respiratory disease in humans. While the discovery of L. pneumophila is relatively recent compared to other bacterial pathogens, over the past 50 years, L. pneumophila has emerged as a powerhouse for studying host-pathogen interactions. In its natural habitat of fresh water, L. pneumophila interacts with a diverse array of protozoan hosts and readily evolve to expand their host range. This has led to the accumulation of the most extensive arsenal of secreted virulence factors described for a bacterial pathogen and their

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a nematode parasite that resides in the pulmonary arteries of rodents, serving as its definitive hosts. The life cycle involves several species of non-marine gastropods as intermediate hosts, and the African giant snail Achatina fulica is considered one of the most important around the world. Experimental data concerning A. cantonensis infection in the African giant snail remains notably limited. This helminth causes eosinophilic meningitis or meningoencephalitis in humans, representing an emergent zoonosis in Brazil. Understanding the host-parasite relationship

OBJECTIVE: To study the differential expressions of piRNAs in the seminal plasma of men and the role of piRNAs in spermatogenesis.
METHODS: We sequenced the seminal plasma samples collected from 187 male infertility patients and 58 normal healthy men, obtained differentially expressed piRNAs, and detected the relative expressions of piRNAs in different types of sperm by RT-qPCR to explore their significance in the diagnosis of male infertility. Using histopathology, RNA-protein pull-down and Western blot, we investigated the action mechanism of piRNAs in spermatogenesis in the mouse model.

Brewed green tea, green tea extract, and its primary active compound, epigallocatechin gallate, may interact with drugs and alter the drug's therapeutic effectiveness, ultimately leading to therapeutic failure or drug overdose. Several isolated reports have claimed that epigallocatechin gallate is the main active ingredient that causes these effects. While a few studies aimed to uncover evidence of epigallocatechin gallate-drug interactions, no study has thoroughly and collectively reviewed them. Epigallocatechin gallate is a potential cardioprotective agent used by many patients with cardiova

Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) is a fish-borne trematode that inhabits the bile duct of mammals including humans, cats, dogs, rats, and so on. In the complex life cycle of C. sinensis, the worm develops successively in two intermediate hosts in fresh water and one definitive host. What's more, it undergoes eight developmental stages with a distinct morphology. Clonorchiasis, caused by C. sinensis infection, is an important food-borne parasitic disease and one of the most common zoonoses. C. sinensis infection could result in hyperplasia of the bile duct epithelium, obstructive jaundice, gal

Some snails act as intermediate hosts (vectors) for parasitic flatworms (flukes) that cause neglected tropical diseases, such as schistosomiases. Schistosoma haematobium is a blood fluke that causes urogenital schistosomiasis and induces bladder cancer and increased risk of HIV infection. Understanding the molecular biology of the snail and its relationship with the parasite could guide development of an intervention approach that interrupts transmission. Here, we define the genome for a key intermediate host of S. haematobium-called Bulinus truncatus-and explore protein groups inferred to pla

Type 3 Innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) have been described as tissue-resident cells and characterized throughout the body, especially in mucosal sites and classical first barrier organs such as skin, gut and lungs, among others. A significant part of the research has focused on their role in combating pathogens, mainly extracellular pathogens, with the gut as the principal organ. However, some recent discoveries in the field have unveiled their activity in other organs, combating intracellular pathogens and as part of the response to viruses. In this review we have compiled the latest studies on

Iron deficiency is the most frequent nutritional deficiency in the world with an estimated 1.4 billion people affected. The usual way to fight iron deficiency is iron fortification, but this approach is not always effective and can have undesirable side effects including an increase in the growth and virulence of gut bacterial pathogens responsible for diarrhea and gut inflammation. Iron is mainly absorbed in the duodenum and is tightly regulated in mammals. Unabsorbed iron enters the colonic lumen where many microorganisms, referred to as gut microbiota, reside. Iron is essential for these ba

In December of 2019, several cases of unknown atypical respiratory diseases emerged in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China. After preliminary research, it was stated that the disease is transmittable between humans and was named COVID-19. Over the course of next months, it spread all over the world by air and sea transport and caused a global pandemic which affects life of everyone now-a-days. A large number of countries, have since been forced to take precautions such as curfews, lockdowns, wearing facemasks etc. Even with vaccines being produced in mass numbers, lack of targeted therapy continues

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is best known as an essential neurotransmitter in the evolved central nervous system (CNS) of vertebrates. However, GABA antedates the development of the CNS as a bioactive molecule in metabolism and stress-coupled responses of prokaryotes, invertebrates and plants. Here, we focus on the emerging findings of GABA signaling in the mammalian immune system. Recent reports show that mononuclear phagocytes and lymphocytes, for instance dendritic cells, microglia, T cells and NK cells, express a GABAergic signaling machinery. Mounting evidence shows that GABA receptor

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of neurodegenerative disease in the world. Genetic evidence strongly suggests that aberrant generation, aggregation, and/or clearance of neurotoxic amyloid-β peptides (Aβ) triggers the disease. Aβ accumulates at the points of contact of neurons in ordered cords and fibrils, forming the so-called senile plaques. Aβ isoforms of different lengths are found in healthy human brains regardless of age and appear to play a role in signaling pathways in the brain and to have neuroprotective properties at low concentrations. In recent years, different substanc

Understanding mechanisms by which parasitic worms (helminths) control their hosts' immune responses is critical to the development of effective new disease interventions. Fasciola hepatica, a global scourge of humans and their livestock, suppresses host innate immune responses within hours of infection, ensuring that host protective responses are quickly incapacitated. This allows the parasite to freely migrate from the intestine, through the liver to ultimately reside in the bile duct, where the parasite establishes a chronic infection that is largely tolerated by the host. The recent identif

Bacteria, archaeae, fungi and viruses of the intestinal microbiome play an important role as symbionts in the complex human ecosystem. Parasites, which account for about 40 % of the earth's biodiversity, depend on hosts to complete their life cycle. This article explains how they use them and which signalling pathways play a role in this, using toxoplasmosis and malaria as examples. The parasitic manipulation hypothesis is based on impressive observations in the wild and under laboratory conditions, especially in invertebrates. For the assumption of an adaptive manipulation, every step from th

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease caused by various Leishmania spp., which are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Algeria is one of the most affected countries, with thousands of cutaneous leishmaniasis cases registered every year. From March to November of 2016 and 2017, sand flies were collected in 12 municipalities in Setif province, North-Eastern Algeria. Sand flies were identified and females were tested by PCR for detecting Leishmania DNA. Additionally, cutaneous leishmaniasis cases notified during the study period were analysed. Out of 1804 sand flies collected, 1737 were identi
