The frequency of post-partum hypopituitarism (Sheehan's syndrome) is difficult to assess. It is the purpose of this paper to ascertain the incidence of post-partum hypopituitarism in Okayama Red Cross Hospital. Out of 19,302 women who delivered at the hospital during 10 years from 1961 to 1970, we selected 1.010 women who had a blood loss of 500 ml. or more at delivery. A review of 29 patients with toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis was undertaken to (1) compare the results of medical and surgical treatment; (2) determine the optimal timing for surgical intervention, and (3) identify possible precipitating factors. In 4 patients corticosteroid hypersecretion associated with excessive intake of alcohol led initially to an erroneous diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome. If diagnostic errors are to be avoided, a history of alcohol intake should always be sought in a patient in whom the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome is entertained. The abnormalities of pseudo-Cushing's syndrome revert to normal on ethanol withdrawal.

Pituitary aplasia or hypoplasia occurs in anencephalic and normocephalic infants. Two infants with hypopituitarism are described; in each the diagnosis was made clinically. The infants had frank clinical and histologic evidence of the neonatal hepatitis syndrome. There may be more than a chance relationship between the clinicopathologic findings of neonatal hypopituitarism and hepatitis.

The influence of the newer, non-barbiturate hypnotics Mandrax (diphenhydramine-methaqualone) and nitrazepam on drug-metabolizing capacity was assessed and compared with the effect of amylobarbitone, a known inducer of drug-metabolizing enzymes.
