To estimate clinical, pathogenic and serological aspects of acute oral candidiasis (AOC) during febril episodes in patients with haematologic malignancies, 23 consecutive patients who developed AOC within 7 days from start of fever were compared with 23 consecutive patients who did not develop AOC. Sensitization trials with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) were performed in 150 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) (24 severe, 86 moderate, and 40 mild cases). The usefulness of telescoping plugged catheter (TPC) together with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in the same bronchoscopic act in the diagnosis of pulmonary infiltrates was studied in 113 fiberoptic bronchoscopic examinations performed on 96 immunocompromised patients. The TPC cultures detected pulmonary bacterial infections in 25 (22 percent) cases but showed a high frequency of false positive results (12 microorganisms, 27 percent). We examined the effect of both CD3-CD16(Leul la)+CD56(NKH1,Leu19)+ non-T lineage natural killer (NK) cells and CD3+CD8+CD16-CD56+ T lineage NK cells on B cell proliferation and differentiation. By using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) responses directed against Strongyloides stercoralis larvae antigens were measured in 104 presumably immunocompetent individuals with chronic uncomplicated strongyloidiasis and in 15 immunocompromised patients with S. stercoralis infection. Fifty healthy North American adults and 18 patients with other helminthic parasites served as controls. We studied the clinical and pathologic features of bacterial esophagitis in three index cases identified by endoscopic biopsy and in 20 autopsy cases. The immune response in leprosy forms a spectrum with lepromatous leprosy patients exhibiting specific unresponsiveness to antigens of Mycobacterium leprae. Studies on a liver transplant recipient with fatal disseminated aspergillosis are described. The concentration of IgG antibodies to Aspergillus rose sharply with the onset of fever and changes in the chest X-ray, reaching a peak on day 10. The families of four patients with herpes gestationis (HG) (pemphigoid gestationis) and five patients with polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP) were HLA typed. Unprimed murine spleen cells, when administered intravenously to irradiated recipients together with antigen for 7 days, are induced to display either DTH reactivity or to mount a humoral (IgM and IgG) response.
