In the United States, suicide is a leading cause of death in prisons and jails, with incarcerated individuals being nine times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Identifying vulnerabilities at each stage of custody (prebooking, jail, prison) and factors that increase suicide risk can improve prevention efforts. A hierarchical binary logistic regression was conducted on data from the Texas Justice Initiative's Deaths in Custody Report. Variables included race/ethnicity, sex, age at death, days in custody, classification of crime as violent or nonviolent, and custody type

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated mothers are a marginalised group who experience substantial health and social disadvantage and routinely face disruption of family relationships, including loss of custody of their children. To support the parenting role, mothers and children's units (M&Cs) operate in 97 jurisdictions internationally with approximately 19 000 children reported to be residing with their mothers in custody-based settings.
AIM: This rapid review aims to describe the existing evidence regarding the models of service delivery for, and key components of, custodial M&Cs.

Working in prisons can be a challenging job, managing a population of incarcerated people while keeping oneself, one's colleagues, and the people themselves safe. Some corrections officers may expect violence in the workplace, yet being a victim of violence is no trivial experience. In prison, violent incidents are categorized according to the severity of the violence perpetrated. However, we do not know how characteristics of a violent incident may contribute to the severity of violence perpetrated toward corrections staff. To begin to address this gap, we examined characteristics of physical

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a prevalent complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), arising from chronic renal insufficiency leading to disturbed calcium metabolism. This disruption triggers hypersecretion of the parathyroid gland, characterizing the condition. Osteitis fibrosa cystica (OFC), a rare complication of untreated secondary hyperparathyroidism, results in benign resorptive bone lesions and the formation of cystic cavities within bones. Our case report describes a 46-year-old incarcerated Hispanic male with a 17-year history of end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperpara

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Abdominal wall hernia is a protrusion of abdominal contents through an acquired or congenital weakness or wall defect. A ventral hernia, including an appendix, is a rare condition. The appendix in the hernial sac is already known as inguinal and femoral hernia and has been named Amyand hernia and De Garengeot hernia, respectively.
CASE PRESENTATION: We have presented a 74-year-old woman with complaints of point tenderness in the right lower abdomen and para-umbilical and a palpable non-reducible mass over the para-umbilicus with some erythema on the skin, which st

BACKGROUND: Children are less susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2 and subsequent severe disease, yet especially vulnerable to the indirect effects of the pandemic. A constrained healthcare service, combined with the societal and behavioural changes observed during the pandemic, is likely to have altered the presentation of paediatric surgical disease. The objective was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volume of paediatric surgical admissions, the severity of disease and the type of surgical pathology treated at our centre.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study co

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH) affect variable portions of diaphragm, resulting in herniation of abdominal contents into the chest. CDH typically is diagnosed prenatally or presents soon after birth with respiratory distress and abnormal chest X-ray (CXR) findings. Presentation after infancy is rare but well described. We present a case of delayed presentation of a right CDH following left CDH repair.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-month-old boy with a history of a left CDH repaired in the newborn period presented with a newly elevated right hemidiaphragm presum

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, almost every type of abdominal surgery has been performed and refined using the laparoscopic technique. Surgeons are applying it for more procedures, which not so long ago were performed only in the classical way. The position of laparoscopic surgery is therefore well established, and in many operations it is currently the recommended and dominant method.
AIM: The aim of the preparation of these guidelines was to concisely summarize the current knowledge on laparoscopy in acute abdominal diseases for the purposes of the continuous training of surgeon

The aim of the study was to explore women's experience of Icelandic prisons and of the interconnectedness of trauma, substance use, and prison. Nine incarcerated women, 20-45 years old, participated in this phenomenological study. One or two in-depth interviews were conducted with each participant, in all 16 interviews. The interconnectedness of trauma, substance use, and prison was evident in the participants' accounts. The participants had experienced severe traumas, in childhood and/or in adult life, most of it caused by recurrent experience of violence, bullying, neglect, and beatings and

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) remains unclear but might involve genes participating in neural crest development. Gene methylation controls the expression of many genes and is involved in the development and migration of neural crest cells, but the involvement of demethylation in HSCR is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the expression of ten-eleven translocation methylcytosine dioxygenase 1 (TET1) (a demethylation protein) in patients with HSCR.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of surgical specimens from paediatric patients with and without HSCR (e

Medial humeral epicondyle fractures account for 10% to 20% of elbow injuries in children. We hypothesized that in the fixation of medial humeral epicondyle fractures, safety and efficiency of bioabsorbable poly(l-lactide-co-glycolic acid) implant are comparable to traditional metallic and other novel approaches. A retrospective cohort study was performed between 2016 and 2019, analyzing 24 children who had medial humeral epicondyle fractures. Every fracture was stabilized with biodegradable poly(l-lactide-co-glycolic acid) implants (Bioretec® ActivaPin®) and tension band polydioxanone sutures.

Acquired diaphragmatic hernia (ADH) is a rare complication after liver surgery in adult and pediatric patients. In the literature, a few low case series have been reported. Its incidence is estimated to be between 0.74% and 2.9%. Main descriptions of ADH concern liver resection for tumors, living donor hepatic donation in adult patients, and partial liver graft transplant in children [1,2]. We encountered a rare case of ADH in the postoperative time of a liver transplant with thrombosis of hepatic artery due to median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS). The patient was a 65-year-old woman diagno

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Incisional hernia appendicitis is very rare. Very few papers have been published reporting about Pfannenstiel incision hernia with appendicitis. Here we report one such case of Pfannenstiel hernia with appendicitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20 years old lady presented with a tender mass in the right iliac fossa after Pfannenstiel incision. Ultra-sonography showed an incisional hernia with a 12.1 mm defect at the site of the incision. A provisional diagnosis of strangulated hernia was made. Acute appendicitis was diagnosed intra-operatively. Appendectomy followed by pr
