Public Health Responses to Reemergence of Animal Rabies, Taiwan, July 16-December 28, 2013.

Taiwan had been free of indigenous human and animal rabies case since canine rabies was eliminated in 1961. In July 2013, rabies was confirmed among three wild ferret-badgers, prompting public health response to prevent human rabies cases. This descriptive study reports the immediate response to the reemergence of rabies in Taiwan. Response included enhanced surveillance for human rabies cases by testing stored cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from patients with encephalitides of unknown cause by RT-PCR, prioritizing vaccine use for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) during periods of vaccine shortage a

An Outbreak of Lymphocutaneous Sporotrichosis among Mine-Workers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The largest outbreak of sporotrichosis occurred between 1938 and 1947 in the gold mines of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Here, we describe an outbreak of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis that was investigated in a South African gold mine in 2011. METHODOLOGY: Employees working at a reopened section of the mine were recruited for a descriptive cross-sectional study. Informed consent was sought for interview, clinical examination and medical record review. Specimens were collected from participants with active or partially-healed lymphocutaneous lesions. Environmental samples were co

Risk Factors for Acquired Rifamycin and Isoniazid Resistance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies looking at acquired drug resistance (ADR) are diverse with respect to geographical distribution, HIV co-infection rates, retreatment status and programmatic factors such as regimens administered and directly observed therapy. Our objective was to examine and consolidate evidence from clinical studies of the multifactorial aetiology of acquired rifamycin and/or isoniazid resistance within the scope of a single systematic review. This is important to inform policy and identify key areas for further studies. METHODS: Case-control and cohort studies and randomised controlled t

Causality assessment of serious neurologic adverse events following 2009 H1N1 vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events occurring after vaccination are routinely reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). We studied serious adverse events (SAEs) of a neurologic nature reported after receipt of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine during the 2009-2010 influenza season. Investigators in the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) network sought to characterize these SAEs and to assess their possible causal relationship to vaccination. METHODS: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) physicians reviewed al

Food choices and practices during pregnancy of immigrant and Aboriginal women in Canada: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Facilitating the provision of appropriate health care for immigrant and Aboriginal populations in Canada is critical for maximizing health potential and well-being. Numerous reports describe heightened risks of poor maternal and birth outcomes for immigrant and Aboriginal women. Many of these outcomes may relate to food consumption/practices and thus may be obviated through provision of resources which suit the women's ethnocultural preferences. This project aims to understand ethnocultural food and health practices of Aboriginal and immigrant women, and how these intersect with re

Does respondent driven sampling alter the social network composition and health-seeking behaviors of illicit drug users followed prospectively?

Respondent driven sampling (RDS) was originally developed to sample and provide peer education to injection drug users at risk for HIV. Based on the premise that drug users' social networks were maintained through sharing rituals, this peer-driven approach to disseminate educational information and reduce risk behaviors capitalizes and expands upon the norms that sustain these relationships. Compared with traditional outreach interventions, peer-driven interventions produce greater reductions in HIV risk behaviors and adoption of safer behaviors over time, however, control and intervention gro

[Causes and diagnostic procedure of diffuse lung disease in 28 children].

OBJECTIVE: Diffuse lung disease comprises a large, heterogeneous group of pulmonary interstitial and parenchymal disease. It is therefore difficult to some extent to make etiologic diagnosis. Little information on clinical spectrum and diagnostic evaluation of pediatric diffuse lung disease is available in our country. The purpose of this study was to explore the causes of and diagnostic approach to diffuse lung disease in children. METHODS: Twenty-eight children with diffuse lung disease aged 2 months to 14 years were studied retrospectively. Their history, physical examination, radiographic

[Vibrio vulnificus infection: clinical and bacteriological analysis of four cases].

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) infection has recently been drawing attention as a high mortality disease especially in a patient with the preexisting chronic liver disease. The illness caused by V. vulnificus is divided into three groups such as primary septicemia, wound infection and gastrointestinal illness. Primary septicemia, which is the most common in Japan, is defined as a systemic illness presenting fever or hypotension with recovery of V. vulnificus from blood or tissue without the apparent primary focus of infection. We diagnosed four cases as infectious diseases of V. vulnificus

New and unusual aspects of ovarian germ cell tumors.

Ovarian germ cell tumors are reviewed with emphasis on recent developments. In the primitive germ cell tumor group the recently recognized subtypes of yolk sac tumor, the hepatoid and glandular variants are described. Hepatoid tumors, which resemble hepatocellular carcinomas, are usually admixed with other patterns of yolk sac neoplasia but when the hepatoid component predominates, distinction from metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma may be difficult. Glandular yolk sac tumors include those with a cribriform pattern as well as tumors that may be confused with endometrioid carcinoma. Within the

Equitable Patient and Public Involvement Strategies for Scaling Health and Social Care Interventions: A Consensus Study Inspired by Delphi Methods.

BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement (PPI) is recognized as essential for scaling interventions in health and social services, but there are few guidelines to support it. We sought consensus on strategies for involving patients and the public in scaling in an equitable and meaningful way. METHODS: We conducted a participatory consensus study inspired by Delphi techniques. We used as a starting point 23 PPI strategies for scaling (on the involvement continuum, from providing information to full co-production) as identified in a 2024 scoping review. First, we established a steering commit

Evaluating Experiences With the Newly Enacted Law on Assisted Suicide in Austria: Protocol for an Interdisciplinary Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Austria has only recently established a legal framework for assisted dying. Individuals seeking assistance in suicide must navigate a multistage process that has been criticized for its complexity both for the individuals seeking assistance and for the health care and legal professionals involved in the procedure. OBJECTIVE: To address the critical gap in empirical research that sheds light on the law's implementation and its impact on the lived experiences of those involved, as well as on the broader health care sector, we have designed an evaluation that examines the various per

Antimicrobial resistance within the one health lens: global drivers, mechanisms and public health policy gaps in low resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global healthcare systems in terms of poor clinical outcomes, reduced quality of life and economic burdens. It is therefore imperative to comprehend the impact of all One Health domains, such as humans, livestock, agriculture and ecosystems in the fight against AMR. This narrative review therefore aims to highlight the resistance mechanisms, AMR global burden and its contributing factors. Additionally, this review identifies currently existing information gaps, monitoring parameters and global AMR mitigation strategies.

Effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation on perioperative neurocognitive dysfunction: study protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs), a common postoperative complication associated with anaesthesia and surgical procedures, are characterised by impairments in memory, attention, language comprehension and social functioning. Accumulating evidence from clinical studies indicates that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-a non-invasive neuromodulatory modality capable of targeted cortical stimulation-may offer therapeutic promise for PND management. To comprehensively assess the intervention efficacy and safety parameters of TMS in mitigating postoperative cognitive

Antimicrobial resistance of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from broiler, layer, and breeder chickens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Antimicrobials are extensively used in poultry production for growth promotion as well as for the treatment and control of diseases, including avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). Poor selection, overuse, and misuse of antimicrobial agents may promote the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in APEC. This study aimed to assess antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and detect antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in APEC isolated from clinical cases of colibacillosis in commercial broiler, layer, and breeder chickens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tota

Exploring the resistome, virulome, and mobilome of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates: deciphering the molecular basis of carbapenem resistance.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae, a notorious pathogen for causing nosocomial infections has become a major cause of neonatal septicemia, leading to high morbidity and mortality worldwide. This opportunistic bacterium has become highly resistant to antibiotics due to the widespread acquisition of genes encoding a variety of enzymes such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases. We collected Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from a local tertiary care hospital from February 2019-February 2021. To gain molecular insight into the resistome, virulome, and genetic environment o

WHO Critical Priority Escherichia coli as One Health Challenge for a Post-Pandemic Scenario: Genomic Surveillance and Analysis of Current Trends in Brazil.

The dissemination of carbapenem-resistant and third generation cephalosporin-resistant pathogens is a critical issue that is no longer restricted to hospital settings. The rapid spread of critical priority pathogens in Brazil is notably worrying, considering its continental dimension, the diversity of international trade, livestock production, and human travel. We conducted a nationwide genomic investigation under a One Health perspective that included Escherichia coli strains isolated from humans and nonhuman sources, over 45 years (1974-2019). One hundred sixty-seven genomes were analyzed ex

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS): protocol for a national survey of the prevalence of child abuse and neglect, associated mental disorders and physical health problems, and burden of disease.

INTRODUCTION: Child maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exposure to domestic violence) is widely understood to be associated with multiple mental health disorders, physical health problems and health risk behaviours throughout life. However, Australia lacks fundamental evidence about the prevalence and characteristics of child maltreatment, its associations with mental disorders and physical health, and the associated burden of disease. These evidence gaps impede the development of public health strategies to better prevent and respond to child maltreatment
