Rectal foreign body and its association with social stigma and mental health: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rectal foreign bodies (FB), as a cause of surgical emergency are on the rise. The management is usually uneventful but delays in presentation are associated with complications and morbidity. Psychiatric illnesses account for a vast majority of FB insertion cases which is usually overlooked. CASE PRESENTATION: 56 year male with alleged history of insertion of a discarded bottle of insecticide into his rectum 6 weeks ago. He presented late, in sepsis due to lack of family support and social taboo, in sepsis. The foreign body was extracted by trans-anal approach with no evidence of

Therapeutic potential of natural products in schistosomiasis-associated liver fibrosis.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that endangers human health and social development. The granulomatous reaction of Schistosoma eggs in the liver is the main cause of hepatosplenomegaly and fibrotic lesions. Anti liver fibrosis therapy is crucial for patients with chronic schistosomiasis. Although Praziquantel is the only clinical drug used, it is limited in insecticide treatment and has a long-term large-scale use, which is forcing the search for cost-effective alternatives. Previous research has demonstrated that plant metabolites and extracts have effective therapeutic effects on liver

Embryonic Flubendiamide Exposure Alters Expression of OTX2 and Other Early Regulators in Domestic Chick Leading to Congenital Eye Defects.

Flubendiamide, a phthalic acid diamide insecticide, has been implicated in potential teratogenic effects on non-target organisms, especially during embryonic development. This study examines the impact of flubendiamide on eye development in chick embryos, a well-established model for vertebrate development. Exposure to 0.5 µg/µL of flubendiamide significantly impaired early ocular morphogenesis, resulting in severe defects such as underdeveloped optic cups and the absence of lens and corneal structures. Histopathological analysis demonstrated disrupted optic cup differentiation, while in silic

A masked gene concealed hand in glove in the forkhead protein crocodile regulates the predominant detoxification CYP6DA1 in Aphis gossypii Glover.

Cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism is an important mechanism of insecticide resistance, most studies show upregulated transcript levels of P450s in resistant insect strains. Our previous studies illustrated that some upregulated P450s were associated with cyantraniliprole resistance, and it is more comprehensive to use the tissue specificity of transcriptomes to compare resistant (CyR) and susceptible (SS) strains. In this study, the expression profiles of P450s in a CyR strain compared with a SS strain in remaining carcass or midgut were investigated by RNA sequencing, and candidate genes we

Advanced nanopesticides: Advantage and action mechanisms.

The use of various chemical substances to control pests, diseases, and weeds in the field is a necessary part of the agricultural development process in every country. While the application of pesticides can improve the quality and yield of crops, plant resistance and the harm caused by pesticide residues to the environment and humans have led to the search for greener and safer pesticide formulations to improve the current situation. In recent years, nanopesticides (NPts) have shown great potential in agriculture due to their high efficiency, low toxicity, targeting, resistance, and controlle

Behavioral effects induced by the oral administration of acetamiprid in male mice during the postnatal lactation period or adulthood.

Acetamiprid (ACE), a neonicotinoid chemical, is widely used as a pesticide due to its rapid insecticidal activity. Although neonicotinoids exert very low toxicity in mammals, the effects of early exposure to neonicotinoids on the adult central nervous system are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of ACE exposure in early life on brain function in adult mice. We exposed male C57BL/6N mice to ACE (10 mg/kg) orally when they were two (postnatal lactation) or 11 weeks old (adult). We examined the effects of ACE on the central nervous system using the mouse behavioral test batte

Application of passive sampling device for exploring the occurrence, distribution, and risk of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in surface water.

Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are compounds of high concern in surface waters around the world. However, few studies have used passive sampling methods to screen and detect these compounds in natural waters. In this study, a self-developed passive sampler was employed to measure pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the rivers of Nanjing, China. A total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 11 pesticides were detected, among which antibiotic and insecticide were the predominant classes, respectively. Valproic acid, caffeine and triclosan from the pharmaceuticals, and isoprocarb and imidacloprid from the pest

Impact of endocrine disruptors on peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro: role of gender.

Humans can be exposed to endocrine disruptors (EDs) in numerous ways. EDs can interfere with endogenous hormones at different levels, resulting in numerous adverse human health outcomes, including immunotoxicity. In this regard, this study aimed to investigate in vitro the possible effects of EDs on immune cells and possible gender differences. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy humans, both males and females, were exposed to 6 different EDs, namely atrazine (herbicide), cypermethrin (insecticide), diethyl phthalate (plasticizer), 17α-ethynylestradiol (contraceptive drug), perfluo

Avermectin reduces bone mineralization via the TGF-β signaling pathway in zebrafish.

Avermectin, a widely used insecticide, is primarily effective against animal parasites and insects. Given its extensive application in agriculture, a large amount of avermectin accumulates in natural water bodies. Studies have shown that avermectin has significant toxic effects on various organisms and on the nervous system, spine, and several other organs in humans. However, the effects of avermectin on bone development have not been reported yet. In this study, zebrafish embryos were treated with different concentrations of avermectin to explore the effects of avermectin on early bone develo

Biocides used as material preservatives modify rates of de novo mutation and horizontal gene transfer in bacteria.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem with the environment being an important compartment for the evolution and transmission of AMR. Previous studies showed that de-novo mutagenesis and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) by conjugation or transformation - important processes underlying resistance evolution and spread - are affected by antibiotics, metals and pesticides. However, natural microbial communities are also frequently exposed to biocides used as material preservatives, but it is unknown if these substances induce mutagenesis and HGT. Here, we show that active substanc

A multiresidue analytical method on air and rainwater for assessing pesticide atmospheric contamination in untreated areas.

The use of pesticides in agriculture to protect crops against pests and diseases generates environmental contamination. The atmospheric compartment contributes to their dispersion at different distances from the application areas and to the exposure of organisms in untreated areas through dry and wet deposition. A multiresidue analytical method using the same TD-GC-MS analytical pipeline to quantify pesticide concentrations in both the atmosphere and rainwater was developed and tested in natura. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to identify the best compromise in extraction conditions

Role of biotransformation in the diazinon-induced toxicity in HepG2 cells and antioxidant protection by tetrahydrocurcumin.

Diazinon (DZN) is an insecticide extensively used to control pests in crops and animals. However, its indicriminated use may lead to liver damage in animals and humans. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of DZN (25-150 µM) on human hepatoblastoma (HepG2) cells after 24 and 48 h of exposure and the role of its biotransformation on the toxicological potential. We also tested the protective effect of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), an antioxidant agent, in the DZN-induced citotoxicity. DZN caused cytotoxicity in the HepG2 cells, inhibiting cell proliferation and reducing cell viability in a dose

Pesticide Importation in Sierra Leone, 2010-2021: Implications for Food Production and Antimicrobial Resistance.

There are no previous studies reporting the type and quantity of pesticides for farming from Sierra Leone and the impact of Ebola or COVID-19 on importation. This study reviewed imported farming pesticides by the Sierra Leone, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), between 2010-2021. It was a descriptive study using routinely collected importation data. We found the MAF imported pesticides for farming only during 2010, 2014 and 2021, in response to growing food insecurity and associated with Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. Results showed insecticide importation increased from 6230 L in 2010

Fighting COVID-19 at the Expense of Malaria in Africa: The Consequences and Policy Options.

Malaria remains a major global health burden, killing hundreds of thousands annually, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In December 2019, a novel illness termed COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, was reported in China. This disease soon spread around the world and was declared a pandemic by the WHO on March 11, 2020. Considering that the malaria burden is high in many low-income tropical countries with little capacity to fund malaria control and eradication programs, the fight against malaria in these regions is likely to be hindered by COVID-19. Indeed, access to health care has generally been l

Prevalence and distribution of lice on sheep and cattle farms in Great Britain.

Lice are common production-limiting ectoparasites affecting livestock. Up-to-date data on their prevalence and spatial distribution on farms in Great Britain is important given that prevalence is believed to be increasing as a result of insecticide resistance. Here the prevalence of farms reporting lice, and factors associated with louse presence, were assessed using a retrospective questionnaire. For sheep and cattle farms, 16.1 % and 15.8 % reported lice on their livestock, respectively. Beef farms were more likely to report lice than dairy farms, with a prevalence of 18.0 % and 7.8 %, respe

A New Family of Diverse Skin Peptides from the Microhylid Frog Genus Phrynomantis.

A wide range of frogs produce skin poisons composed of bioactive peptides for defence against pathogens, parasites and predators. While several frog families have been thoroughly screened for skin-secreted peptides, others, like the Microhylidae, have remained mostly unexplored. Previous studies of microhylids found no evidence of peptide secretion, suggesting that this defence adaptation was evolutionarily lost. We conducted transcriptome analyses of the skins of Phrynomantis bifasciatus and Phrynomantis microps, two African microhylid species long suspected to be poisonous. Our analyses reve
