Background/Objectives: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a common complication in patients with colorectal cancer presenting for surgery. Perioperative IDA is associated with increased post-operative mortality and morbidity. The impact on clinical outcomes for the active management of anaemia before surgery, with treatments such as intravenous (IV) iron, is uncertain. Methods: We performed a single-centre nested cohort study, analysing prospectively collected data from patients with colorectal cancer who were treated with IV iron prior to elective major abdominal surgery. Collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare histopathological finding on gastric biopsies in children. It is associated with abdominal pain and iron deficiency anemia, usually not respondent to oral iron supplements. The aim of this study was to describe our experience in the management of pediatric patients with CG. Moreover, we propose to review the literature on this topic. We retrospectively reviewed all pediatric patients diagnosed with CG at our centre from January 2014 to January 2019. Three pediatric patients (2 F, mean age 12.3) were diagnosed with CG during the study period. Two presented w

Cadmium (Cd) contamination occurs in paddy soils; hence it is necessary to reduce Cd content of rice. Application and mode of action of ferrous sulphate in minimizing Cd in rice was monitored in the present study. Pot culture with Indian rice variety Swarna (MTU 7029) was maintained in Cd-spiked soil containing ferrous sulphates, which is expected to reduce Cd accumulation in rice. Responses in rhizosphere pH, root surface, metal accumulation in plant and molecular physiological processes were monitored. Iron plaque was induced on root surfaces after FeSO4 application and the amount of Fe in p

The neurodegenerative disorder Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is caused by mutations in frataxin, a mitochondrial protein whose function remains controversial. Using co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry we identified multiple interactors of mitochondrial frataxin in mammalian cells. One interactor was mortalin/GRP75, a homolog of the yeast ssq1 chaperone that integrates iron-sulfur clusters into imported mitochondrial proteins. Another interactor was ISD11, recently identified as a component of the eukaryotic complex Nfs1/ISCU, an essential component of iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis. Inte

The cytoplasmic membrane protein CcmC is, together with other Ccm proteins, a component for the maturation of c-type cytochromes in Gram-negative bacteria. A Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17400 ccmC mutant is cytochrome c-deficient and shows considerably reduced production of the two siderophores pyoverdine and quinolobactin, paralleled by a general inability to utilize various iron sources, with the exception of haem. The ccmC mutant accumulates in a 5-aminolevulinic acid-dependent synthesis a reddish, fluorescent pigment identified as protoporphyrin IX. As a consequence a visA phenotype simil

The diagnosis of iron disturbances usually includes the evaluation of serum parameters. Serum iron is assumed to be entirely bound to transferrin, and transferrin saturation-the ratio between the serum iron concentration and serum transferrin-usually reflects iron availability. Additionally, serum ferritin is commonly used as a surrogate of tissue iron levels. Low serum ferritin values are interpreted as a sign of iron deficiency, and high values are the main indicator of pathological iron overload. However, in situations of inflammation, serum ferritin levels may be very high, independently o

Population studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses have revealed no relationship between iron status and breast cancer, a weak positive association, or a small protective effect of low iron status. However, in those studies, the authors concluded that further investigation was merited. The set of experiments reported here used preclinical models to assess the likely value of further investigation. The effects of iron status on the initiation and promotion stage of mammary carcinogenesis are reported. Using the classical model of cancer initiation in the mammary gland, 7,12 dimethyl-benz

Impaired utilization of iron by the heme synthesizing red cell precursors was investigated in 258 patients with malignant tumors of different histological types and different tumor spread. There was evidence, that impaired iron uptake by the erythropoietic cells results in an increased flow of iron to the reticuloendothelial iron stores. Investigations on bone marrow smears showed that sideroblast counts were significant lower than in healthy controls reflecting a deficient iron supply to the erythropoietic cells. In contrast, reticuloendothelial storage iron was increased paralleled by an inc

In order to estimate the possible influence of pancreatic disease upon iron absorption, fecal analysis was carried out after administration of 5 mg iron labeled with 59Fe. Twelve cases of pancreatic calcification, 7 cases of chronic pancreatitis, 3 cases each of pancreatectomy and miscellaneous diseases, and 52 cases for control were studied. Significant elevation of iron absorption was observed in 4 or 21 patients with pancreatic diseases. Two of the 4 cases were also found to have low transferrin saturation and the other two have had a long history of heavy alcoholic intake. There was no def

Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is a cornerstone in the management of iron deficiency anemia, yet its administration is associated with significant side effects, most notably hypophosphatemia. This adverse event is not a class effect but is disproportionately linked to specific formulations, particularly ferric carboxymaltose (FCM). This review synthesizes the current clinical evidence, elucidates the central pathophysiological role of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), and explores a potential pharmacogenomic basis for individual susceptibility. Clinical data from numerous randomized controll

Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA) is an autosomal recessive inherited form of iron deficiency anemia characterized by discrepantly high hepcidin levels relative to body iron status. However, patients with monoallelic exonic TMPRSS6 variants have also been reported to express the IRIDA phenotype. The pathogenesis of an IRIDA phenotype in these patients is unknown and causes diagnostic uncertainty. Therefore, we retrospectively summarized the data of 16 patients (4 men, 12 women) who expressed the IRIDA phenotype in the presence of only a monoallelic TMPRSS6 variant. Eight unaffecte

Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) can be used in Patient Blood Management (PBM) to promote the optimization of preoperative haemoglobin (Hb), which aims to minimise the use of allogeneic blood components and improve clinical outcomes, with better cost-effectiveness. This was an observational study conducted in a retrospective and multicentre cohort with adults from elective orthopaedic, cardiac and colorectal surgeries, treated according to local standards of PBM with allogeneic blood product transfusions (ABTs) on demand and with FCM to correct iron deficiency with or without anaemia. BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is common during infancy and therefore iron supplementation is recommended. Recent reports suggest that iron supplementation in already iron replete infants may adversely affect growth, cognitive development, and morbidity.
METHODS: Normal and growth restricted rat pups were given iron daily (30 or 150 μg/d) from birth to postnatal day (PD) 20, and followed to PD56. At PD20, hematology, tissue iron, and the hepatic metabolome were measured. The plasma metabolome and colonic microbial ecology were assessed at PD20 and PD56. T-maze (PD35) and passive avoidance (PD40)

Iron is an essential cofactor in numerous cellular processes. The iron deficiency in the oceans affects the primary productivity of phytoplankton including cyanobacteria. In this study, we examined the function of PfsR, a TetR family transcriptional regulator, in iron homeostasis of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803. Compared with the wild type, the pfsR deletion mutant displayed stronger tolerance to iron limitation and accumulated significantly more chlorophyll a, carotenoid, and phycocyanin under iron-limiting conditions. The mutant also maintained more photosystem I and photosystem

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) are a major global health threat. Given their multifactorial pathogenesis, understanding the interconnected mechanisms driving disease progression is essential. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and compromised antioxidant defenses, is emerging as a promising target for therapeutic intervention in CMD. Growing evidence underscores the intricate interplay among iron metabolism, redox homeostasis, and lipid metabolism in regulating ferroptosis and CMD. Notably, we propose the concept

Natural killer (NK) cells are innate immune cells that play a crucial role as a first line of defense against viral infections and tumor development. Iron is an essential nutrient for immune cells, but it can also pose biochemical risks such as the production of reactive oxygen species. The importance of iron for the NK cell function has gained increasing recognition. We have previously shown that NK cells require iron to efficiently eliminate virus-infected target cells; however, the impact of nutritional iron deficiency on NK cell function and the therapeutic benefits of iron supplementation

Iron is indispensable for almost all forms of life but toxic at elevated levels1-4. To survive within their hosts, bacterial pathogens have evolved iron uptake, storage and detoxification strategies to maintain iron homeostasis1,5,6. Recent studies showed that three Gram-negative environmental anaerobes produce iron-containing ferrosome granules7,8. However, it remains unclear whether ferrosomes are generated exclusively by Gram-negative bacteria. The Gram-positive bacterium Clostridioides difficile is the leading cause of nosocomial and antibiotic-associated infections in the USA9. Here we re

Nutritional deficiencies and parasitic infections continue to undermine immune defenses and drive anemia rates among adolescents, creating a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Although multiple factors contribute to this burden, the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency (ID) remain the most critical levers for progress. The longer-term effects of weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFAS) on morbidity symptoms and growth outcomes remain unclear. A cluster randomized controlled trial was implemented within a school setting involving a cohort of 306 adolescent g

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is a frequent cause of anaemia in pregnancy and often results in fatigue and malaise. To prevent complications during labour, timely iron suppletion is important.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old multiparous female presented at the outpatient clinic in her 38th week of this pregnancy because of fatigue and lightheadedness. She had been prescribed oral iron suppletion a month earlier but had not taken the tablets. Because her haemoglobin level had decreased to 6.3 mmol/l, it was decided to start her on intravenous iron dextran treatment. During administration of the
