Early-maturing girls are at risk for internalizing and externalizing problems. Research concerning pubertal timing and mental health among Mexican Americans or the influence of parenting behaviors on these relations has been scarce. This study addressed these gaps. This was a prospective examination of 362 Mexican-origin girls and their mothers in 3 waves of data. Measures included girls' self-report of pubertal development and girls' and mothers' report of maternal harsh parenting and daughters' mental health. Using structural equation modeling, we examined whether pubertal timing in 5th grad

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of massage on infant weight gain and exclusive maternal breast-feeding of an intervention that involved teaching mothers to massage their full-term infants. The sample included 100 healthy newborn infants who were receiving primary healthcare at 3 health centers in a low-income neighborhood of Santiago, Chile. The control group included 65 infants and the massage group included 35 infants. During their second well-child clinic visit, clinic nurses provided instruction to massage-group mothers about how to massage their infants, based on the

BACKGROUND: As part of the reproductive health quality assurance programme, the Ministry of Health sought to review maternal deaths in public hospitals. These hospitals attend 95% of institutional births and 82% of all births.
METHODS: Deaths among females 10-50 years in public hospitals during 1993-1995 were reviewed to identify pregnancy-related deaths. Cause of death and access to care were compared with previous studies (1981-1983 and 1986-1987 [12 months]).
RESULTS: The maternal mortality ratio of 106.2 per 100 000 live births, was no different than the 119.7 observed in 1986-1987 and 1

INTRODUCTION: This study describes the prevalence of and factors associated with obesity during pregnancy (body mass index (BMI) ≥30.0 kg/m²) among women attending a tertiary maternity hospital in Dublin, Ireland, where 1 in 8 deliveries occur nationally.
METHODS: The study involved secondary analysis of electronic health records from The Coombe Hospital from 2013 to 2022. BMI was calculated using objective measurement of maternal height and weight in early pregnancy. Descriptive estimates of obesity prevalence during pregnancy were calculated by year. Linear mixed effects regression was used

INTRODUCTION: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy that poses significant risks during pregnancy, leading to increased maternal complications such as Vaso-occlusive crises, acute chest syndrome, preeclampsia, preterm labor, and perinatal complications such as preterm births, low birthweights and mortality. The complexities surrounding the management of SCD extend beyond the clinical symptoms and require a comprehensive understanding of the social, emotional, and systemic factors that influence patient outcomes. While existing research has largely focused on the epidemiolo

OBJECTIVE: To describe, for the 2016-2018 period, the frequency, causes and risk factors of maternal deaths in France.
METHOD: Data from the National Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths for 2016-2018.
RESULTS: For 2016-2018, 272 maternal deaths occurred in France up to 1 year after the end of pregnancy, i.e a maternal mortality ratio of 11.8 per 100,000 live births (95 % CI 10.4-13.3), and 8.5 (IC 95 % 7.4-9.8) for maternal mortality up to 42 days. Compared to women aged 20-24, the risk of maternal death is multiplied by 2.6 for women aged 35-39, by 5 for women aged 40 and over. Obese

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), affect a significant proportion of women in Australia, with long-term implications for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Despite existing preventive measures, participation in ongoing health monitoring remains low. This study aims to explore women's preferences and experiences regarding preventive healthcare after GDM and HDP, and to identify their unanswered questions about the association between these conditions and future CVD risk.
METHODS: A participatory, qual

IN BRIEF: Maternal morbidities both unmodifiable (genetics and prior history) and modifiable (insulin resistance and obesity) are associated with gestational diabetes. This review discusses common risk factors and postpartum consequences.
ABSTRACT: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as glucose intolerance of varying severity with first recognition or onset during pregnancy. It can be caused by excess insulin resistance, a failure to augment insulin secretion in response to pregnancy, or both. The risk of developing GDM is affected by several

BACKGROUND: Studies show that youth in low socioeconomic communities suffer significant disturbances in mental and emotional health because of exposure to violence and peer victimisation, manifesting in internalising disorders such as depression, anxiety and traumatic stress.
AIM: To examine the relation between risks and exposure to community violence and peer victimisation.
SETTING: Low socioeconomic communities in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
METHODS: Data were collected via school and home interviews with youth and maternal caregivers using standardised schedules and instruments. These includ

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are common complications associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Insights gained from long-term cohort studies have revealed that women with a history of HDP are predisposed to recurrent HDP in subsequent pregnancies and face heightened risks for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases later in life. Pregnancy is a unique condition that overloads maternal cardiac and metabolic functions, and is recognized as a "maternal stress test" for future cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Pregnancy and postpartum period provide

Maternal and child health remains an enduring global challenge, having occupied a prominent position on international agendas since the dawn of the 21st century. During pregnancy, syphilis emerges as the second most prevalent cause of stillbirth on a global scale, potentially leading to a range of adverse outcomes. This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of cases of gestational and congenital syphilis and the hospital care provided for newborns in Campo Grande municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, from 2013 to 2018. This is a cross-sectional study based

BACKGROUND: Compared to the exhaustive study of transgenerational programming of obesity and diabetes through exposures in the prenatal period, postnatal programming mechanisms are understudied, including the potential role of breast milk composition linking maternal metabolic status (body mass index and diabetes) and offspring growth, metabolic health and future disease risk.
METHODS: This narrative review will principally focus on four emergent bioactive compounds [microRNA's (miRNA), lipokines/signalling lipids, small molecules/metabolites and fructose] that, until recently were not known

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic advances have markedly increased life expectancy for those with cystic fibrosis (CF), resulting in a median predicted survival over 50 years. Consequently, people with CF (pwCF) are living through their reproductive years and the rate of pregnancy is rapidly rising. Despite the increased relevance of this topic, multicentre studies investigating the association between maternal health and choices made during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcomes do not exist. Furthermore, there are very limited data on the outcomes following CF transmembrane conductance regulator (…

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is uniquely designed for the infant and contains the key nutrients and bioactive factors required to support optimal infant health and development. While previous studies have reported that maternal obesity can influence milk composition, whether this relationship is driven by maternal or dietary factors remains unclear.
AIM: The aim of this study is to assess the impact of test meals varying in fat and sugar content on post-prandial concentrations of macronutrients and metabolic hormones in the breast milk.
METHODS: This open label crossover study will include 25 lac
