Risk factors associated with low birth weight.

OBJECTIVES: Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the major factors affecting child morbidity and mortality worldwide. Every day, approximately 800 women die from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth worldwide. Maternal ill health increases the risk of LBW. This study seeks to investigate determinants and incidence of LBW. METHODS: This study was conducted based on the medical records of mothers and their 1,946 infants born in 2016-2019 at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. Data on mothers and newborn infants were obtained from the Re

Postnatal infection surveillance by telephone in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: An observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal and newborn infections are important causes of mortality but morbidity data from low- and middle-income countries is limited. We used telephone surveillance to estimate infection incidence and risk factors in women and newborns following hospital childbirth in Dar es Salaam. METHODS: We recruited postnatal women from two tertiary hospitals and conducted telephone interviews 7 and 28 days after delivery. Maternal infection (endometritis, caesarean or perineal wound, or urinary tract infection) and newborn infection (umbilical cord or possible severe bacterial infection)

Aspirin for the prevention of placenta-mediated complications in pregnant women with chronic hypertension.

Chronic hypertension affects 1-5% of women of childbearing age. During pregnancy, chronic hypertension is associated with an increased risk of vascular disease such as superimposed preeclampsia (PE), intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), placental abruption, and preterm delivery. These serious and frequent pathologies, specific to pregnancy, carry a particularly high risk of maternal complications (HELLP syndrome, eclampsia, maternal death) and perinatal complications (perinatal death, neurological disorders). To date, there is no curative treatment of vascular complications of chronic hyper

Impact of HIV-1 infection on the IGF-1 axis and angiogenic factors in pregnant Cameroonian women receiving antiretroviral therapy.

Although mother-to-child transmission of HIV has dramatically declined, the number of in utero HIV-exposed, uninfected infants is on the increase. HIV-exposed infants are at an increased risk of mortality, morbidity and slower early growth than their non-HIV exposed counterparts. Maternal HIV increases the risk of having preterm deliveries, intrauterine growth restriction and low birth weight babies. However, the mechanism underlying dysregulation of fetal growth in HIV-infected pregnant women is unknown. We sought to determine whether maternal HIV is associated with dysregulation of the insul

Interaction between Maternal and Paternal SHMT1 C1420T Predisposes to Neural Tube Defects in the Fetus: Evidence from Case-Control and Family-Based Triad Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are caused by the failure of neural tube formation which occurs during early embryonic development. NTDs are the most severe and leading cause of fetal mortality. Serine hydroxymethyl transferase (SHMT1) provides one-carbon units necessary for embryogenesis and defects in one-carbon production result in specific pathological conditions during pregnancy. The present study is aimed to evaluate the association of SHMT1 C1420T with NTD risk in the fetus using fetal, maternal and paternal groups by applying both case-control and family-based triad approaches.

Obstetric complications of placenta previa percreta.

INTRODUCTION: Placenta previa is related to severe maternal and fetal morbidity. The increasing incidence of cesarean delivery rate causes a marked increase in abnormally invasive placenta over the past decades. The abnormally invasive placenta is becoming the foremost cause of obstetric hemorrhage and postpartum hysterectomy, causing a significant maternal and fetal morbidity and even mortality. Maternal morbidity in such cases also comprise politransfusion, development of disseminated intravascular coagulation, uterine rupture, cystostomy, fistula formation, ureteral stricture, intensive car

Systematic identification of spontaneous preterm birth-associated RNA transcripts in maternal plasma.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous preterm birth (SPB, before 37 gestational weeks) is a major cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. Studies on SPB have been hampered by the limited availability of markers for SPB in predelivery clinical samples that can be easily compared with gestational age-matched normal controls. We hypothesize that SPB involves aberrant placental RNA expression, and that such RNA transcripts can be detected in predelivery maternal plasma samples, which can be compared with gestational age-matched controls. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using gene

Appraising LaQshya's potential in measuring quality of care for mothers and newborns: a comprehensive review of India's Labor Room Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Poor intrapartum care in India contributes to high maternal and newborn mortality. India's Labor Room Quality Improvement Initiative (LaQshya) launched in 2017, aims to improve intrapartum care by minimizing complications, enforcing protocols, and promoting respectful maternity care (RMC). However, limited studies pose a challenge to fully examine its potential to assess quality of maternal and newborn care. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap and reviews LaQshya's ability to assess maternal and newborn care quality. Findings will guide modifications for enhancing LaQshya'

Incidence and Risk Factors for Low Birthweight and Preterm Birth in Post-Conflict Northern Uganda: A Community-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Annually, an estimated 20 million (13%) low-birthweight (LBW) and 15 million (11.1%) preterm infants are born worldwide. A paucity of data and reliance on hospital-based studies from low-income countries make it difficult to quantify the true burden of LBW and PB, the leading cause of neonatal and under-five mortality. We aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors for LBW and preterm birth in Lira district of Northern Uganda. METHODS: This was a community-based cohort study, nested within a cluster-randomized trial, designed to study the effect of a combined intervention on

Competing risks model in screening for preeclampsia by maternal factors and biomarkers at 30-34 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) affects 2-3% of all pregnancies and is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. We have proposed a 2-stage strategy for the identification of pregnancies at high risk of developing PE. The objective of the first stage, at 11-13 weeks' gestation, is a reduction in the prevalence of the disease through pharmacological intervention in the high-risk group. The objective of the second stage, during the second and/or third trimesters, is to improve perinatal outcome through close monitoring of the high-risk group for earlier diagnosis of the clin
