Relationship between leptin and adiponectin concentrations in plasma and femoral and spinal bone mineral density in spinal cord-injured individuals.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Previously, the associations between leptin and adiponectin levels with bone mineral density (BMD) have been reported in different populations, and occasionally, controversial results have been demonstrated. Until now, these relationships in spinal cord-injured individuals have not yet been described. PURPOSE: We tried to investigate the correlation between leptin and adiponectin concentrations in plasma and BMD in Iranian patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Cross-sectional investigation. PATIENT SAMPLE: Referred patients with SCI who did not me

Vitamin D deficiency and corticosteroid use are risk factors for low bone mineral density in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

BACKGROUND: As several factors can contribute to low bone mineral density (BMD), we investigated the role of vitamin D in low BMD while controlling for other risk factors in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) patients. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study between 2008 and 2012 in adult IBD patients. Demographic data including age, gender, ethnicity, BMI, along with disease type and location, vitamin D levels, prior corticosteroid use, and anti-TNF use were recorded and evaluated with DEXA results. RESULTS: A total of 166 patients [105 Crohn's disease (CD), 61 ulcerative c

Mineral composition of seawater bittern nigari products and their effects on changing of browning and antioxidant activity in the glucose/lysine maillard reaction.

Seawater bittern (nigari) is a concentrated solution remaining after the crystallization process of salt that has been used as a coagulant for tofu. Recently, various nigari products are distributed in the East Asia. To clarify the properties of nigari products, major mineral composition of six nigari products was determined. Then, effects of the nigari on the browning and antioxidant activity during the glucose/lysine Maillard reaction were investigated. Though the predominant cation was Mg(2+), the content was varied by each product (0.88-6.49 mol/L). The other major ion contents were also v

Effect analysis of mineral salt concentrations on nosiheptide production by Streptomyces actuosus Z-10 using response surface methodology.

The objective of this study was to develop an optimal combination of mineral salts in the fermentation medium for nosiheptide (Nsh) production using statistical methodologies. A Plackett-Burman design (PBD) was used to evaluate the impacts of eight mineral salts on Nsh production. The results showed that among the no-significant factors, CaCO3, and K2HPO4·3H2O had positive effects, whereas FeSO4·7H2O, CuSO4·5H2O, and ZnSO4·7H2O had negative effects on Nsh production. The other three significant factors (Na2SO4, MnSO4·H2O, and MgSO4·7H2O) were further optimized by using a five-level three-facto

Temporal trends in obesity, osteoporosis treatment, bone mineral density, and fracture rates: a population-based historical cohort study.

Diverging international trends in fracture rates have been observed, with most reports showing that fracture rates have stabilized or decreased in North American and many European populations. We studied two complementary population-based historical cohorts from the Province of Manitoba, Canada (1996-2006) to determine whether declining osteoporotic fracture rates in Canada are attributable to trends in obesity, osteoporosis treatment, or bone mineral density (BMD). The Population Fracture Registry included women aged 50 years and older with major osteoporotic fractures, and was used to assess

Abnormal mineralization of the Ts65Dn Down syndrome mouse appendicular skeleton begins during embryonic development in a Dyrk1a-independent manner.

The relationship between gene dosage imbalance and phenotypes associated with Trisomy 21, including the etiology of abnormal bone phenotypes linked to Down syndrome (DS), is not well understood. The Ts65Dn mouse model for DS exhibits appendicular skeletal defects during adolescence and adulthood but the developmental and genetic origin of these phenotypes remains unclear. It is hypothesized that the postnatal Ts65Dn skeletal phenotype originates during embryonic development and results from an increased Dyrk1a gene copy number, a gene hypothesized to play a critical role in many DS phenotypes.

Neither absence nor excess of FGF23 disturbs murine fetal-placental phosphorus homeostasis or prenatal skeletal development and mineralization.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) controls serum phosphorus largely through actions on the kidneys to excrete phosphorus and reduce calcitriol. Although these actions are well established in adults and children, the role that FGF23 plays in regulating fetal phosphorus metabolism has not been previously studied. We used several mouse models to study the effect of endogenous deficiency or excess of FGF23 on fetal phosphorus metabolism. We found that intact FGF23 does not cross the placenta from mother to fetus, but wild-type fetuses normally have intact FGF23 levels that approximately equal th

Supplementation with calcium and short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides affects markers of bone turnover but not bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

This 24-mo randomized, double-blind, controlled trial aimed to examine whether supplementation with a natural marine-derived multi-mineral supplement rich in calcium (Ca) taken alone and in conjunction with short-chain fructo-oligosaccharide (scFOSs) has a beneficial effect on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers (BTMs) in postmenopausal women. A total of 300 non-osteoporotic postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to daily supplements of 800 mg of Ca, 800 mg of Ca with 3.6 g of scFOS (CaFOS), or 9 g of maltodextrin. BMD was measured before and after intervention along with

The effect of oral contraceptive different patterns of use on circulating IGF-1 and bone mineral density in healthy premenopausal women.

Both insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and oral contraceptive (OC) use have been linked to premenopausal breast and colorectal cancers, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Understanding the effects of different patterns of use of OC on IGF-1 levels and bone mineral density (BMD) may offer insight into its influence on osteoporosis. We conducted a cross-sectional study, which included 135 women, who were then divided into three groups: Group A who were OC current users, 41 women; Group B who never use OC, 51 women; and Group C who were past users of OC, 41 women. Each patient completed a

Relationship between bone mineral density and the frequent administration of epidural steroid injections in postmenopausal women with low back pain.

OBJECTIVES: The coping mechanisms utilised by patients with the fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) pose a crucial focus of treatment. Previous research points to the positive effects of religiosity and spirituality (R/S) as tools for coping with illness. The role of these factors in coping with chronic pain in FM has not previously been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the link between R/S and FM outcomes. METHODS: Fifty-five FM patients (ACR criteria) attending a tertiary rheumatology clinic completed a packet of questionnaires assessing demographic data, levels of religiosity and spir

Do long term survivors of ewing family of tumors experience low bone mineral density and increased fracture risk?

BACKGROUND: Multimodal treatment regimens for Ewing's sarcoma have led to survival rates approaching 70% of patients with no metastases at diagnosis. However, these treatments have long-term side effects. Low bone mineral density (BMD) and risk of fractures can occur owing in part to chemotherapy and limited mobility from local control of the primary tumor. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We performed this study to answer the following questions: (1) Do long-term survivors of the Ewing family of tumors sustain low BMD? (2) Which factors are associated with BMD in these patients? (3) Do they experience fr

Equine-derived bone mineral matrix for maxillary sinus floor augmentation: a clinical, radiographic, histologic, and histomorphometric case series.

The objective of this proof-of-principle multicenter case series was to examine the bone regenerative potential of a newly introduced equine-derived bone mineral matrix (Equimatrix) to provide human sinus augmentation for the purpose of implant placement in the posterior maxilla. There were 10 patients requiring 12 maxillary sinus augmentations enrolled in this study. Histologic results at 6 months demonstrated abundant amounts of vital new bone in intimate contact with residual graft particles. Active bridging between residual graft particles with newly regenerated bone was routinely observed

Treatment of maxillary central incisor with external root resorption using mineral trioxide aggregate: 18 months follow-up.

External cervical resorption is the loss of dental hard tissue as a result of odontoclastic action; it usually begins on the cervical region of the root surface of the teeth. This case report demonstrates an external cervical resorption in a maxillary central incisor of a 24-year-old male patient. After surgical intervention and root canal treatment, the resorption was subsequently sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate. The 18 months follow-up demonstrates no pathological changes on clinical and radiographic examination. This case report presents a treatment strategy that might improve the he

IGFBP-2 is a negative predictor of cold-induced brown fat and bone mineral density in young non-obese women.

Recent studies have shown a positive correlation between brown adipose tissue (BAT) and bone mineral density (BMD). However, mechanisms underlying this relationship are unknown. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is an important regulator of stem cell differentiation promoting bone formation. IGF binding protein 2 (IGFBP-2) binds IGF-1 in the circulation and has been reported to inhibit bone formation in humans. IGF-1 is also a crucial regulator of brown adipocyte differentiation. We hypothesized that IGFBP-2 is a negative and IGF-1 a positive regulator of BAT-mediated osteoblastogenesis. We

1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and the vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism Apa1 influence bone mineral density in primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D are the most important hormones regulating calcium metabolism. In primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) excessive amounts of PTH are produced. Bone turnover is enhanced, leading to reduced bone mineral density and elevated levels of serum calcium. The aim of this study was to investigate relations between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)(2)D) and bone mineral density, as well as known genetic polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor and enzymes metabolising vitamin D in patients with PHPT.
