Case-control study examining the impact of oral health problems on the quality of life of the families of preschoolers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of dental caries, traumatic dental injuries (TDI), toothaches, and malocclusion on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of the families of Brazilian preschool children. A population-based, matched case-control study involving 415 pre-schoolers aged 3-5 years was conducted. The case (impact on OHRQoL) and control groups (no impact on OHRQoL) were matched for age, gender, and family income at an 1:4 ratio. Impact on the OHRQoL of a family was assessed using the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (B-ECOHIS

Masticatory function and bite force in stroke patients.

Orofacial functions are frequently affected by stroke, but little is known on the nature and extent of the impairment of mastication, which is investigated in this observational study. Thirty-one stroke patients, aged 69.0 ± 12.7 yrs, presenting with a hemi-syndrome with facial palsy, were recruited. Chewing efficiency, maximum bite and restraining lip forces were tested. Stroke severity (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) and dental state were recorded. The control group was similar in age, gender, and dental state (n = 24). The chewing efficiency was significantly lower in the strok

The relationship between the presence of tooth-borne subgingival deposits and inflammation found with a dental endoscope.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory periodontal diseases are found in many dentate individuals, but therapists and researchers who assess disease activity have had to rely on external clinical signs and symptoms to ascertain the health of the subgingival periodontal tissues. However, by using an endoscope in the subgingival environment, the therapist can see the relationship of subgingival tooth-borne accretions to signs of inflammation in the pocket wall. This study explored those relationships via the endoscope. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with moderate to severe periodontitis were chosen. The study

Variance component modeling of attachment level measurements.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of within subject and within tooth variability of attachment-level measurements on hypothesis testing. Full-mouth attachment-level measurements were obtained at 4 sites per tooth in early onset periodontitis subjects (both localized N = 89 and generalized N = 139) and adult periodontitis subjects (N = 309). Variance component models utilizing iterative generalized least squares were employed to estimate the % of variance distributed at the level of the site, tooth and subject in the 3 subject populations. The data indicate that a signi

A longitudinal study of dental caries in the primary teeth of children who suffered from infant malnutrition.

A prospective, four-year longitudinal study of 209 Peruvian children was conducted to evaluate the effect of a single malnutrition episode occurring at infancy (i.e., < 1 year of age) on dental caries in the primary teeth. Children were recruited into the study at age 6-11 months after they had suffered from a malnutrition episode and were thus classified by anthropometry as either: (1) Normal; (2) Wasted (low weight for height); (3) Stunted (low height for age); or (4) Stunted and Wasted (S and W). Eruption of the primary teeth was significantly delayed in all malnourished children; however,

Deep learning-based 3D forensic facial reconstruction: a volumetric morphological inference approach using a skull-conditioned U-Net.

Forensic facial reconstruction (FFR) is an investigative aid used in cases where primary identifiers such as DNA, dental records, or fingerprints are unavailable or inconclusive. Rather than establishing identity, FFR aims to generate an anatomically plausible facial approximation that may facilitate recognition and help narrow the pool of potential candidates. Reconstructing facial soft tissue from cranial geometry remains an inherently ill-posed inverse problem, as the skull does not uniquely determine the overlying facial morphology. In this study, skull-conditioned facial reconstruction is

Benzo[a]pyrene exposure affect the formation of dental hard tissue via the regulation of glycerophospholipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: The formation of enamel occurs across multiple developmental stages and is highly sensitive to disruptions in cellular signaling. Perinatal complications, preterm birth, and exposure to environmental chemicals are systemic factors known to contribute to developmental defects of enamel (DDE). These defects adversely affect normal oral physiological function and impact patients’ daily lives. The precise pathophysiology of DDE, however, remains unclear, complicating efforts at prevention. Consequently, elucidating the mechanisms through which environmental exposures lead to DDE is ess

Chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia attenuates root resorption following delayed tooth replantation by upregulating OPG/RANKL signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Tooth avulsion, a severe dental trauma prevalent among adolescents, is commonly treated with delayed replantation. However, this procedure is frequently complicated by root resorption, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss. Given that adolescent patients are not candidates for implant therapy, strategies to mitigate root resorption and prolong the survival of replanted teeth are critically needed. This study aimed to investigate the effect of chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) on root resorption following delayed tooth replantation and to elucidate its potential mechan

Finite Element Analysis of Stress Distribution in Healthy and Restored Mandibular Molars with Zirconia and Lithium Disilicate Crowns Under Vertical and Oblique Loading.

The mechanical compatibility between dental restorative materials and the natural tooth structure is a relevant factor for long-term clinical performance. Although zirconia (yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, Y-TZP) and lithium disilicate are widely used for full-coverage crowns, their biomechanical interaction with the underlying dentin and pulp under functional loading remains insufficiently characterized. This study reports a comparative finite element analysis (FEA) of a mandibular first molar under vertical (200 N, axial) and oblique (200 N, 30°) loading, evaluating three

Efficacy of long-acting growth hormone in Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome with a novel 3.824 Mb 4q25 deletion: a Case Report and systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a multisystem disorder primarily caused by PITX2 mutations. While eye and dental anomalies are classic, the role of PITX2 as a dosage-sensitive regulator of the human growth axis remains clinically under-recognized. We aim to elucidate the link between large-scale 4q25 microdeletions and severe growth hormone deficiency (GHD). METHODS: A 5.4-year-old boy with ocular segment dysgenesis and short stature underwent family-based whole-exome sequencing (WES). Standardized growth hormone (GH) stimulation tests and longitudinal growth dynamics analysis b

Biomimetic Remineralization of Artificial Caries Lesions with a Calcium Coacervate, Its Components and Self-Assembling Peptide P11-4 In Vitro.

The application of calcium coacervates (CCs) may hold promise for dental hard tissue remineralization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the infiltration of artificial enamel lesions with a CC and its single components including polyacrylic acid (PAA) compared to that of the self-assembling peptide P11-4 in a pH-cycling (pHC) model. Enamel specimens were prepared from bovine incisors, partly varnished, and stored in demineralizing solution (DS; pH 4.95; 17 d) to create two enamel lesions per sample. The specimens were randomly allocated to six groups (n = 15). While one lesio

Neuroprotective effects of mesenchymal stromal cells in mouse models of Alzheimer's Disease: The Mediating role of gut microbes and their metabolites via the Microbiome-Gut-Brain axis.

The intricacy and multifaceted nature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) necessitate therapies that target multiple aspects of the disease. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) emerge as potential agents to mitigate AD symptoms; however, whether their therapeutic efficacy involves modulation of gut microbiota and the microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA) remains unexplored. In this study, we evaluated the effects of three distinct MSCs types-derived from the umbilical cord (UCMSC), dental pulp (SHED), and adipose tissue (ADSC)-in an APP/PS1 mouse model of AD. In comparison to saline control, MSCs administrati
