Hyperspectral imaging-based early stress and disease detection for sustainable crop management.

This review highlights how hyperspectral imaging, artificial intelligence, spectral analysis, and plant physiology enable early, accurate, non-destructive stress detection, advancing precision agriculture and sustainable food production. Early detection of plant diseases and stress is vital to sustaining crop productivity under increasingly climatic and environmental pressures. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) enables the identification of physiological and biochemical changes in plants before visible symptoms emerge, supporting timely diagnosis and precision agriculture. This review examines the s

Tear biomarkers in veterinary species: An updated review with special focus on dogs and cats.

The tear film is traditionally described as a highly organized, multilayer structure comprising an outer lipid layer, a central aqueous phase, and an inner mucin layer, each contributing distinct structural and functional properties. Beyond its essential roles in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis, tear fluid represents an integrated biological secretion shaped by systemic physiological regulation that might be used as a source of biomarkers. While tear fluid has long been recognized in human medicine as a valuable reservoir of biomarkers, its diagnostic and translational potential in vete

Psychophysical stress during a 24 h dive: A case study of an older male diver.

This case study investigated the psychophysiological stress responses of a diver during and after a 24-h hyperbaric exposure. Comprehensive biomarker analysis revealed relevant changes in oxidative stress parameters and cardiac muscle markers. Notably, a critical time point at 6 h (T2) emerged, characterized by peak oxidative stress and diminished antioxidant capacity, followed by progressive cardiac strain as evidenced by elevated creatine kinase isoenzime (CK-MBm) and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. Despite these physiological challenges, no pathologica

Development of a hybrid manikin for extra-uterine life support technology innovation.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have shown successful maintenance of fetuses on extra-uterine life support technology. This technology has the potential to offer a liquid-based alternative for the care of extremely premature infants. METHODS: To bridge the gap between preclinical research and clinical translation, and to provide a low-risk environment, we developed a hybrid fetal manikin to complement animal studies and facilitate technology development and clinician training. Through these fetal manikins, characteristics of extremely premature infants can be mimicked through integrated actua

Photoelectrochemical determination of nitrite as a biomarker of exercise-induced nitric oxide metabolism in athletes using a CdS/polyaniline sensor.

The precise detection of nitrite as a stable, end product and downstream metabolite of NO is critical for understanding exercise-induced physiological adaptation in athletes. However, typical electrochemical techniques usually have restricted sensitivity, photointerference, and matrix-dependent inaccuracy when detecting biological samples. In this work, we fabricated a PEC platform exploiting an ultrahigh-photocurrent CdS/polyaniline (CdS/PANI) heterostructured film to facilitate accurate and selective nitrite detection as a biologically important health parameter of exercise-induced NO metabo

Magnesium in Neurocritical Care: Clinical Relevance, Status Assessment, and Practical Implications for Outcomes-A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium regulates neuronal excitability, NMDA receptor activity, and cerebrovascular tone. Dysmagnesemia is common in patients with acute brain injury (>65%), yet large randomized trials of magnesium neuroprotection have been neutral despite strong physiological rationale and consistent observational associations with outcomes. A key limitation may be diagnostic misclassification: the total serum magnesium poorly reflects the biologically active ionized fraction and may misclassify magnesium status in 20-85% of ICU patients during critical illness. PURPOSE: This narrative review

Sympathetic vasomotion as an early marker of hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Each year, over 1.8 million people die from hemorrhagic shock, and, since the median time from onset to death is only two hours, early recognition is the cornerstone of management. The sympathetic nervous system is the fastest physiological hemodynamic compensatory mechanism, and we have developed a novel measure of sympathetic vascular control called sympathetic vasomotion which could serve as an early marker of hemorrhage. METHODS: We performed unilateral renal denervation on six rabbits and instrumented these rabbits with bilateral renal flow probes and arterial pressure tele

Contemporary insights into neuroimmune interactions across development and aging.

Initially considered distinct systems with independent physiological functions, recent evidence highlights the crucial role of active crosstalk between the nervous and immune systems in regulating critical physiological and neurological processes and immunological homeostasis. The identification of a direct body-brain circuitry allowing the monitoring of peripheral inflammatory responses, a unique skull bone marrow source of immune cells to the central nervous system (CNS), and the physical interface of the blood-brain barrier with the meningeal system suggest direct intersystem interactions,

On the state-nonstate theory of hypnosis: network and topological EEG findings.

Hypnosis is a state of consciousness spontaneously occurring or induced through various techniques. Its occurrence is more likely in individuals with high scores of hypnotizability (highs) than in low hypnotizables (lows). The study aimed to assess the topological homogeneity within highs and lows during neutral hypnosis, and the EEG topological characteristics of highs and lows before and after hypnotic induction experienced as an altered state of consciousness only by highs. Sixteen highs and 16 lows were enrolled, informed that they would be submitted to hypnotic induction and studied acros

Applications of metabolomics in cow health assessment.

BACKGROUND: The dairy cow is an integral part of the global agricultural economy and plays a vital role in human nutrition. Compromised health in dairy cows leads to substantial economic losses and adverse environmental impacts. Understanding cow physiology and the etiology of common diseases is essential for developing effective strategies to improve animal health and mitigate negative consequences. Over the past two decades, metabolomics has emerged as a powerful approach not only for assessing and monitoring the health status of dairy cows but also for predicting and diagnosing diseases. A

Locomotor Activity Monitoring in Mice to Study the Phase Shift of Circadian Rhythms Using ClockLab (Actimetrics).

The circadian clock regulates biochemical and physiological processes to anticipate changes in light, temperature, and food availability over 24 h. Natural or artificial changes in white/blue lighting exposure (e.g., seasonal changes, jet lag, or shift work) can advance or delay the clock phase to synchronize physiology with the new environmental conditions. These changes can be monitored through behavioral experiments in circadian research based on the analysis of locomotor activity by measuring wheel-running revolutions. The protocol includes measuring the internal period length in constant

Carbon Dioxide as a Multisystem Threat in Long Duration Spaceflight.

Elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco2) poses a persistent health challenge during spaceflight. Unlike Earth's environment, the International Space Station experiences Pco2 levels that often exceed terrestrial safety thresholds, creating unique physiological risks for astronauts. In microgravity, localized Pco2 "pockets" can form due to lack of convection, exacerbating hypercapnic symptoms such as headaches, visual disturbances, and cognitive impairments. Moreover, microgravity-induced cephalad fluid shifts amplify the impact of CO2-mediated cerebral vasodilation, contributing to el

Anorexia nervosa symptoms are induced after specific gut microbiota dysbiosis transfer in germ-free mice.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is the most severe and life-threatening eating disorder. Its pathophysiology remains largely unknown, and no effective treatment currently exists for severe forms of the disease. Gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis has been consistently reported in AN; however, no study has yet considered the role of the microbiota within the full spectrum of AN symptoms. To investigate the direct involvement of the microbiota in disease symptoms, we developed a murine model of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), using germ-free BALB/c mice colonized with fecal samples from well-characteriz

[Behavior of the mare during parturition - a literature review].

In horses, parturition is characterized by the fact that any delays may rapidly result in the death of the foal. Therefore, birth monitoring and the rapid detection of dystocia are of great importance. For this purpose, the differentiation between behavior associated with physiological parturition and activities related to difficult parturition is important. The aim of this publication is to present the physiological behavior of mares during parturition on the basis of a literature review. The behavior of mares in the opening phase of parturition is highly individual. In general, it is charact

Colorimetric Assaying of Exosomal Metabolic Biomarkers.

Exosomes released into the extracellular matrix have been reported to contain metabolic biomarkers of various diseases. These intraluminal vesicles are typically found in blood, urine, saliva, breast milk, cerebrospinal fluid, semen, amniotic fluid, and ascites. Analysis of exosomal content with specific profiles of DNA, microRNA, proteins, and lipids can mirror their cellular origin and physiological state. Therefore, exosomal cargos may reflect the physiological processes at cellular level and can potentially be used as biomarkers. Herein, we report an optical detection method for assaying e

Engineering a Cortisol Sensing Enteric Probiotic.

Chronic stress can lead to prolonged adrenal gland secretion of cortisol, resulting in human ailments such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, immunosuppression, and cardiomyopathy. Real time monitoring of chronic increases in cortisol and intervening therapies to minimize the physiological effects of stress would be beneficial to prevent these endocrine related illnesses. Gut microbiota have shown the ability to secrete, respond, and even regulate endocrine hormones. One such microbe, Clostridium scindens, responds transcriptionally to cortisol. We engine

DOES PREENING BEHAVIOR REDUCE THE PREVALENCE OF AVIAN FEATHER LICE (PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA)?

Animals defend themselves against parasites in many ways. Defenses, such as physiological immune responses, are capable of clearing some infections. External parasites that do not feed on blood, however, are not controlled by the physiological immune system. Instead, ectoparasites like feather-feeding lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) are primarily controlled by behavioral defenses such as preening. Here we test the hypothesis that birds able to preen are capable of clearing infestations of feather lice. We experimentally manipulated preening ability in a captive population of rock pigeons (Colu

Reaction-based fluorescent and chemiluminescent probes for formaldehyde detection and imaging.

Formaldehyde (FA), a reactive carbonyl species, is classified as Group 1 carcinogen by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2004. In addition, clinical studies have implicated that elevated levels of FA have been associated with different kinds of diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and chronic liver and heart disorders. However, in addition to the direct inhalation of FA in the environment, most organisms can also produce FA endogenously by demethylases and oxidases during the metabolism of amino acids and xenobiotics. Since FA plays an important role in p
