Prognostic value of magnetic resonance arthrography for Czerny stage II and III acetabular labral tears.

PURPOSE: To assess the intraobserver reliability and prognostic value of magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) on the basis of postoperative outcome measures following arthroscopic acetabular labral debridement (partial limbectomy). METHODS: Between January 1999 and November 2000, 24 patients (13 females, 11 males) with an average age of 37.1 years (range, 21 to 56 years) underwent hip arthroscopy for the treatment of presumed acetabular labral tears. All patients underwent preoperative MRA and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); images were evaluated by a single musculoskeletal radiologist

Simulation of mechanical responses of fingertip to dynamic loading.

Extended exposure to mechanical vibration has been related to many vascular, sensorineural and musculoskeletal disorders of the hand-arm system, frequently termed 'hand-arm vibration syndrome' (HAVS). A two-dimensional, nonlinear finite element model of a fingertip is developed to study the stress and strain fields of the soft tissue under dynamic loading, that may be encountered while grasping and operating a hand-held power tool. The model incorporates the most essential anatomical elements of a fingertip, such as soft tissue, bone, and nail. The finger is assumed to be in contact with a ste

Bone histological evidence for posture-related load transmission in the talpid pectoral girdle.

The pectoral girdle of terrestrial tetrapods functions as a critical interface for transmitting loads between the trunk and forelimbs. While mammals with a parasagittal forelimb posture mainly rely on the scapula as the principal element for load bearing, talpids (Talpidae) exhibit a markedly specialised pectoral girdle related to a hyper-abducted forelimb posture. In talpids, the humero-clavicular articulation plays an important functional role, suggesting that load-transmission mechanisms within the pectoral girdle may differ from those of typical terrestrial mammals. However, because the pe

Rapid Functional Hand Stabilization in Austere and Operational Environments: A Motion-Permissive Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Upper extremity injuries, particularly those involving the hand, are a significant source of morbidity and reduced operational readiness within military populations. Hand and finger trauma are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries encountered across deployed and non-deployed military settings, frequently affecting the ability to perform mission-essential tasks. In austere and resource-constrained environments, early stabilization strategies must balance protection of injured structures with preservation of function and operational capability. Current military trauma syst

The cingulate-mitochondrial-resonome axis: a conceptual framework integrating rehabilitation, interoception, and affective-motor processing in canine chronic pain.

Chronic musculoskeletal disease in Canis lupus familiaris (dogs) is associated not only with biomechanical dysfunction but also with alterations in autonomic regulation, affective processing, movement behavior, and chronic pain adaptation. Current rehabilitation models primarily emphasize peripheral tissue healing and biomechanics while placing less emphasis on interactions among interoception, nociception, autonomic regulation, and affective-motor processing. The objective of this Hypothesis and Theory article is to present the Cingulate-Mitochondrial-Resonome Axis (CMRA), a systems-level fra

Exploring people-centred healthcare in arthritis care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Arthritis encompasses a group of chronic musculoskeletal conditions that may involve pain, functional limitations, and impacts on quality of life. People-centred care, encompassing both person- and patient centred principles has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an essential strategy to address the complex needs of individuals with chronic illness. However, existing research remains limited in capturing how people with arthritis perceive and experience people-centred healthcare across different stages of their care experiences. The aim of this study was to explore

Prevalence of clinical manifestations among patients with hypophosphatasia in Central and Eastern European countries.

MINI-ABSTRACT: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare systemic disorder with impaired bone mineralization. In 49 Central and Eastern European patients, chronic pain, fractures, deformities, and calcifying periarthritis were frequent. Most had low TN-ALP; only one received asfotase alfa. Findings highlight underdiagnosis, high symptom burden, and need for improved care. INTRODUCTION: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare, potentially life-threatening, progressive, systemic, inherited metabolic disorder caused by loss-of-function variants in the ALPL gene encoding tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (

Feasibility and Safety of Physical Rehabilitation Interventions in Oncohematologic Patients Following Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) induces profound physiological disruption across immune, metabolic, and musculoskeletal systems. Despite advances in conditioning regimens and supportive care, no intervention has yet consistently demonstrated the ability to actively restore systemic homeostasis after transplant. Physical rehabilitation has emerged as a biologically plausible intervention with potential multisystem relevance, but its safety and feasibility in the allo-HSCT setting remain uncertain. Establishing these parameters is an essential prerequisite-equivale

Emergency Point-of-Care Blood Gas Analysis During Mass Gathering Events: Experiences of the Vienna City Marathon.

Background: Long-distance running impacts many organ systems. Aside from musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary events, the gastrointestinal and renal system as well as metabolic homeostasis and electrolyte balance can be affected. A respective medical support strategy enabling rapid diagnosis, triage, and treatment in the context of large sports events is thus of utmost importance. Incidents can be assessed and graded via point-of-care (POC) blood gas analysis (BGA). We thus aimed to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of its use during a large sports event. Methods: All documented patient con

Vitamin D combined with whole-body vibration training for the treatment of osteo-sarcopenia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Osteo-sarcopenia (OS) has become a global public health problem and a frontier research problem, as a combination of sarcopenia (SP) and osteoporosis (OP) diseases. The clinical performances include muscle weakness, systemic bone pain, standing difficulty, even falls and fractures, etc., which seriously affect the patient's life and work. The pathological mechanism of the OS may be the abnormal metabolism which disrupts the equilibrium stability of the musculoskeletal system. Therefore, this study combined vitamin D (Vit. D) and whole-body vibration training (WBVT) to intervene in

Headaches Associated with Face Mask Use During COVID-19 Pandemic-Are We Seeing a Headache Epidemic?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The clinical utility of cyclobenzaprine for the treatment of muscle spasm associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions is limited by cholinergic adverse effects associated with its use. As expected, these effects may be pronounced in the elderly in whom altered renal and hepatic function may change drug pharmacokinetics. The goal of this study was to characterize the pharmacokinetics of the extended-release formulation of cyclobenzaprine (CER) in elderly volunteers. METHODS: This randomized, open-label, two-period crossover study compared the pharmacokin

Vedolizumab and Extraintestinal Manifestations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

In Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, inflammation is not limited to the digestive tract. Extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs), which affect up to 50% of patients, can substantially impair quality of life. EIMs may parallel luminal disease activity or have an independent course. They most commonly involve the musculoskeletal system (e.g., peripheral or axial arthritis) and skin (e.g., erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum). Less commonly, the hepatobiliary tract (e.g., primary sclerosing cholangitis [PSC]) and the eye (e.g., episcleritis, scleritis, and uveitis) are involved. Althoug

NSAIDs/corticosteroids--primum non nocere.

NSAIDs/Corticosteroids are the most used and maybe misused drugs against "aches and pains of the musculoskeletal system". Their effectiveness to reduce (not cure) inflammation and related pain is without doubt. The problem is that of their side effects in particular of the GI-tract and other body systems. It is clear that these side effects occur more often and more seriously in a number of patients, the so-called high risk group: elderly women, patients with previous history of gastro-intestinal ulcer and corticosteroid users. The discovery that there are two pathways to influence cyclooxygen

[Trends of physical development and adaptation to the study load and health-improving sports activities in elementary schoolchildren of Moscow].

UNLABELLED: The inclusion of 7-10-year-old children in the school system occurs in the context of the interaction of two processes: activation of ontogenesis at this stage of age development and stimulation of biological and psychological adaptation of younger schoolchildren to the learning activity. The main factors negatively affecting the health of elementary school students are the following: hypokinesia, mental and psycho-emotional stress related to computer and digital learning technologies, prolonged stay in closed rooms of the educational institution rather than in the natural environm

Testicular vasculitis: findings differentiating isolated disease from systemic disease in 72 patients.

Testicular vasculitis (TV) may be part of systemic (testicular) vasculitis (STV) or may exist as single-organ/isolated (testicular) vasculitis (ITV). In the current study we sought to identify clinical and histologic features that distinguish STV from ITV. The distinction was deemed important because it is already well established that in other forms of single organ vasculitis, surgical therapy alone may be curative. We identified patients with biopsy-proven TV from pathology databases from our institution and from an English-language PubMed search. Patients were included if data were availabl

What is the current state of evidence on passive exoskeletons designed to support the lumbar region? A systematic review and meta-analysis of physiological, biomechanical, and user-related outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are the most commonly reported health problem among workers in Europe. Manual handling of loads and awkward postures are cited as important risk factors for WMSDs. Exoskeletons, wearable devices that support and stabilize the locomotor system, are emerging as a lifting aid that could reduce muscular effort and potentially lessen the impact and the prevalence of WMSDs among manual workers. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarize the current scientific evidence on passive exoskeletons designed to support the lower ba
