BACKGROUND: Species of Danionella rank among the smallest of all vertebrates and their miniature size is correlated with an extreme case of progenesis, resulting in tiny, transparent sexually mature individuals. Progenesis has affected the entire skeleton of Danionella, in which 60 skeletal elements are absent, including some of the skull roofing bones. This lack of a skull roof combined with the presence of a fully formed hearing and sound producing apparatus has led to Danionella being used as an important model for neurophysiological studies.
RESULTS: Using both rank based and PGi analyses

Lateralized differences in pallidal outflow are putatively linked to asymmetric tonic contractions of the neck muscles in cervical dystonia (CD). At the population level, the interhemispheric asymmetry has been traditionally studied for the estimation of the spectral power in specified frequency bands. Broadband spectral features, however, were not taken into consideration. The contemporary analysis revealed that the aperiodic (1/f) broadband activity could be a neurophysiological marker of the excitation/inhibition ratio. During deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, we measured bilateral pall

In recent decades, an increasing number of neuroimaging studies utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have explored the differential effects of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) on brain structure and function. We systematically reviewed and integrated the findings from relevant neuroimaging studies in PHN patients. A total of 15 studies with 16 datasets were ultimately included in the present study, which were categorized by the different neuroimaging modalities. The results revealed that PHN was closely associated with structural/microstructural and functional abnormalities of the brain main

INTRODUCTION: The "A" wave is a compound action potential evoked consistently from a muscle by submaximal electric stimulation to the nerve. "A" waves were usually associated with the presence of conduction block and abounded in lower limbs more than in upper limbs. Guillain Barre syndrome is an autoimmune polyradiculoneuropathy that usually follows respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.
PURPOSE: To study the prognostic value of "A" waves in patients with Guillain Barre syndrome with different recovery patterns.
METHODS: In this study, 50 patients with GuillainBarreSyndrome were enrolle

INTRODUCTION: Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) syndrome was a rare and slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder, which heralded by sensory symptoms within the face, and followed by evolution of sensory and motor deficits in the face and limbs. The underlying pathogenesis of FOSMN remains to be fully elucidated.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with facial sensory deficits spreading in a rostral-caudal manner. He then developed diffuse fasciculation, bulbar signs, atrophy and weakness of facial, neck, and limb muscles progressively, a process

BACKGROUND: A retained medullary cord (RMC) is a rare closed spinal dysraphism with a robust elongated cord-like structure extending continuously from the conus medullaris to the dural cul-de-sac that is caused by late arrest of secondary neurulation. Five patients with RMC extending to an associated sacral subcutaneous meningocele have been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an additional patient with RMC, in whom a congenital dermal sinus (CDS) was found in the caudal portion of the RMC. At the age of 3 days, the patient underwent surgery consisting of meningocele excision and cord unte

The distal motor fibers of the tibial and sural nerves are predominantly derived from the S1 root. We aimed to describe the electrophysiological relationship of these two nerves. Clinical, radiological and neurophysiological data of patients with mild, length-dependent, peripheral neuropathy (PN) and subjects without PN were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Eighty-eight individuals without PN and 24 patients with mild axonal PN who had no evidence of lumbosacral radiculopathy were included for analysis. Significant positive correlations were observed for the tibial CMAP and the sural SN

The pathophysiological model of dystonia proposed that in addition to reduced firing rate in the internal pallidum, changes in the pattern may also play a role in disease manifestation. While common methods for patterns separation depends on arbitrary spiketrain parameters, we considered the new method for neural patterns based on spike density histograms and hierarchical clustering of real datasets. We used the single unit activity recordings from the globus pallidus external (GPe) and the globus pallidus internal (GPi) from 10 cervical dystonia (CD), 7 segmental dystonia (SD) and 8 generaliz

In this paper the authors present neuroanatomical and neurophysiological arguments against the microvascular compression in the root entry zone of trigeminal nerve nerve as an ethiopathogenetic factor of ITN. Clinical experience has proven that compression of mixed sensorymotor nerve (peripheral or central one), cannot provoke paroxysmal neuralgic pain. The authors conclude that the well known fact that dental pulp has only pain sensory modality brings up the question what might be consequence of tooth extraction where neural fibers are broken in the innervation areas of maxillar and mandibula

The neuromuscular junction, also called myoneural junction, is a site of chemical communication between a nerve fiber and a muscle cell. There are many types of channels at neuromuscular junction that play indispensable roles in neuromuscular signal transmission, such as voltage-gated calcium channels and voltage-gated potassium channels on presynaptic membrane, and acetylcholine receptors on post-synaptic membrane. Over the last two decades, our understanding of the role that autoantibodies play in neuromuscular junction disorders has been greatly improved. Antibodies against these channels c

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions with impairments in social communication and interaction. Empathy is the ability to understand and share another person's inner life, and it is an essential process in social cognition, which is deficient in ASD. The mismatch field (MMF) has been used as a neurophysiological marker for the automatic detection of changes in auditory stimuli. In the present study, we focused on long-term changes in MMF evoked by an empathic voice and changes in the empathy quotient (EQ) in ASD during an 8-week clinical trial using oxytocin (OT).

BACKGROUND: The electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities found in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are conflicting. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography, which has higher spatial resolution than electroencephalography, to explore neurophysiological features of DLB that may aid in the differential diagnosis.
METHODS: Six patients with DLB, 11 patients with Alzheimer's disease, and 11 age-matched normal subjects were recruited. We investigated alterations in the ratio of event-related synchronization (ERS) in the alpha band after eye-closing.
RESULTS: Although the avera

INTRODUCTION: Progressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME) is rare epilepsy syndrome. Although EEG is a useful neurophysiological technique in the evaluation of epilepsy, few EEG abnormalities have been described in PME. So, how to use EEG hints to establish the suspected diagnosis of PME as soon as possible should be addressed.
CASE PRESENT: We presented a case with refractory myoclonic seizures, and progressive neurological deterioration, diagnosed as PME and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis disease by gene testing. The patient manifested with a significant regression in her speech ability and motor

Depressive patients typically show biased attention towards unpleasant and away from pleasant emotional material. Imaging studies suggest that dysfunctions in a distributed neural network, including the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), are associated with this processing bias. Accordingly, changes in vmPFC activation should mediate changes in processing of emotional stimuli. Here, we investigated the effect of inhibitory and excitatory transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the vmPFC on emotional scene processing in two within-subject experiments using functional magnetic res

Epileptic activity is frequently associated with Alzheimer's disease; this association has therapeutic implications, because epileptic activity can occur at early disease stages and might contribute to pathogenesis. In clinical practice, seizures in patients with Alzheimer's disease can easily go unrecognised because they usually present as non-motor seizures, and can overlap with other symptoms of the disease. In patients with Alzheimer's disease, seizures can hasten cognitive decline, highlighting the clinical relevance of early recognition and treatment. Some evidence indicates that subclin

Evoked potentials (EPs) are a powerful and cost-effective tool for evaluating the integrity and function of the central nervous system. Although imaging techniques, such as MRI, have recently become increasingly important in the diagnosis of neurological diseases, over the past 30 years, many neurologists have continued to employ EPs in specific clinical applications. This review presents an overview of the recent evolution of 'classical' clinical applications of EPs in terms of early diagnosis and disease monitoring and is an extension of a previous review published in this journal in 2005 by
