Fractures of the atrophic edentulous mandible are uncommon but challenging, particularly in elderly patients, due to poor bone quality, reduced vascularization, and the absence of dental occlusion. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate fracture patterns, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes of these mandible fractures, focusing on fracture location, degree of mandibular atrophy, treatment modality, and associated complications. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted. PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE, and Embase were searche

This multicentre prospective clinical trial aimed to determine whether early administration of alendronate (ALN) delays fracture healing after surgical treatment of fractures of the distal radius. The study population comprised 80 patients (four men and 76 women) with a mean age of 70 years (52 to 86) with acute fragility fractures of the distal radius requiring open reduction and internal fixation with a volar locking plate and screws. Two groups of 40 patients each were randomly allocated either to receive once weekly oral ALN administration (35 mg) within a few days after surgery and contin

Endoprosthetic reconstruction, intramedullary nailing, and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) are the most commonly practiced surgical strategies for treatment of metastatic proximal femoral fractures. This review describes functional outcome, local, and systemic complications. All three surgical strategies result in reasonable function on average; however, wide ranges indicate that both poor and good functional levels are obtained. We found that the overall reoperation rate was comparable for endoprosthesis and intramedullary nailing, but was higher for ORIF. J. Surg. Oncol. 2016;114:507

Eighty six subtalar arthrodeses performed between 1985 and 1996 for complications associated with intra-articular calcaneal fractures were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into three Groups: (I) 59 patients with calcaneal malunions (II) 13 patients with failed open reduction and internal fixation, and (III) eight patients undergoing open reductions and primary fusion for highly comminuted fractures. In each scenario, internal fixation was achieved with cancellous lag screws. Bone graft material consisted of either autogenous iliac crest graft, local graft obtained from the late

Chronic osteomyelitis is one of the most serious complications of orthopedic open fracture treatment. The objective of this study was to develop a biodegradable implant coating with impregnated antibiotics as an adjunct to current therapy. We used a polylactic-co-glycolic acid copolymer (PLGA) as the biodegradable carrier and gentamicin as the antibiotic. Our objectives were to establish elution characteristics of the antibiotic from the polymer, and determine if the coated orthopedic implants would inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. In the elution study, coated implants were incubated in phos

Carpometacarpal fractures and dislocations are commonly unrecognized injuries. Treating physicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion regarding this particular injury as delay in diagnosis and treatment can lead to a suboptimal outcome. Mechanism of injury often entails high-energy trauma or an axial blow to a closed fist. Thorough physical examination and adequate imaging are necessary during initial evaluation. Closed management and immobilization can be considered if the injury is recognized early; however, surgical reduction and stabilization are more commonly warranted. This artic

Three cases of compound irreducible dorsal dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the finger are reported. The probable mechanism is discussed. The findings warrant the description "volar capsular boutonnière" as the condyles of the proximal phalanx buttonhole, through the volar structures. Open reduction combined with debridement, is the treatment for such compound irreducible dorsal dislocations. Dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the fingers are common and can usually be reduced by simple traction. Occasionally reduction by closed methods is unsuccessful bec

Proximal humerus fractures are commonly encountered in elderly patients. Surgical treatment demonstrates high complication rates, including varus construct collapse and screw cutout. In this study, the authors evaluate the clinical outcome of locking plate fixation with intramedullary fibular strut graft augmentation as a primary surgical treatment in the prevention of early collapse and screw cutout. A total of 9 patients were evaluated. Surgery was performed for displaced proximal humerus fractures between April and December 2011. Patients were either class 2, 3, or 4, according to Neer clas

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation are the gold-standard treatment for displaced patellar fractures. The current literature remains inconclusive on the relationship between resident participation in the operating room and optimal patient outcomes. We hypothesize that surgeries performed solely by residents, without attending supervision, can provide similar outcomes to those performed by fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, providing new insights into the relationship between resident autonomy and surgical outcomes in the field of orthopedic trauma.
METHODS: A tertiary trauma

BACKGROUND: The standard of care of distal radius fractures requiring operative intervention involves restoration of anatomical alignment radiologically by comparing preoperative films and intraoperative fluoroscopy with established values based on population norms. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of plain radiographs obtained from the uninjured wrist of patients who present with unilateral displaced distal radius fractures as a measure of successful achievement of anatomical realignment.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 133 consecutive patients who presente

PURPOSE: Optimum management of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACF) still controversial. Open surgery carries the risk of wound complications, while non-operative management has a high incidence of arthrosis. To avoid these complications, minimally invasive and percutaneous fixation was introduced. The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the short term clinical and radiological outcomes after closed reduction and percutaneous fixation of DIACF using K-wires.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Outcomes of twenty patients were evaluated at the final follow up. A functional a

BACKGROUND: Fractures of distal radius are common injury in all age groups. Cast treatment with or without close reduction is a viable option. However, the results are often unsatisfactory with restricted function. The open reduction and internal fixation often results in extensive soft tissue dissection and associated high rates of infect and delayed/nonunion. The distractor/external fixator have reported good functional and anatomical results but the incidence of pin traction infection nerve injury and cosmedic deformity are high. We introduced a modified operative technique for minimally in
