A case of parasitic fibroid in unscarred abdomen mimicking pedunculated uterine fibroid: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Parasitic leiomyomas are a type of extra-uterine fibroid that develop outside the uterus and thus receive their blood supply from surrounding structures. While most cases are iatrogenic, spontaneous occurrences are rare and often pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical locations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 28-year-old woman, para 2, with no prior abdominal or pelvic surgery, who presented with a 5-year history of intermittent lower abdominal pain. Ultrasound suggested a pedunculated mass arising from the uterine fundus, mimicking an ovarian endo

Whose diseases matter? Parasitic and viral infections in the political economy of global health research.

Global health research agendas are shaped not only by epidemiological need but also by political, economic, and institutional priorities. This study examines the relationship between disease burden and research and development investment (R&D) for parasitic and viral infectious diseases over the period 2000-2023. We integrate data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (2000-2023) and the G-FINDER database (2007-2023) to compare prevalence and cumulative R&D funding across three panels: parasitic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), viral NTDs, and selected high‑profile viral infections. Paras

Phenotypic plasticity of 'off-host' parasite stages in response to heatwaves in the Daphnia-Pasteuria system.

Heatwaves challenge our understanding of how environmental stressors reshape host-parasite interactions, particularly during the critical "off-host" stages of endoparasites. These stages, often dismissed as inert and unaffected by environmental changes, remain a black box in ecological research despite their key role in parasites' life cycle. Here, we examined how heatwaves affect the infectivity and progression of infection of Pasteuria ramosa, a bacterial parasite of the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. In order to measure the respective influences of the bacterial genotype and the heatw…

Morphology and Phylogeny of Thylacoplethus squillae (Rhizocephala: Thompsoniidae), a Parasite of the Mantis Shrimp Harpiosquilla harpax.

Parasitic barnacles (Cirripedia: Rhizocephala) are among the most highly specialized parasitic groups, exhibiting profound morphological modifications and a remarkable capacity to manipulate crustacean hosts. Thompsoniidae, a family of highly derived rhizocephalans parasitizing a wide range of hosts (stomatopods, anomurans, and brachyurans), remains poorly studied. Here, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Thompsoniidae and investigated the morphology of Thylacoplethus squillae, a parasite of the mantis shrimp Harpiosquilla harpax, with particular emphasis on the interna. Our phylogenetic analys

Contrasting geographic patterns of parasite and hantavirus diversity in the rodent Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Rodentia, Cricetidae).

Host-parasite interactions arise from a complex interplay of evolutionary history, ecological context, and community structure, yet these dimensions are rarely examined together. Here, we introduce a unified framework that links the macroevolutionary processes shaping host-parasite associations with the microevolutionary dynamics driving intraspecific viral and host diversity. This approach reveals how evolutionary and ecological forces jointly structure parasite and viral diversity across a host's range. We used the hantavirus host Oligoryzomys longicaudatus in South America as a model system

Multigenerational effects of cadmium stress on parasitic strategies and performance of synovigenic and proovigenic Trichogramma wasps.

Soil contamination by cadmium (Cd) poses an increasing threat to agricultural ecosystems and may disrupt biological pest control mediated by natural enemies. However, the multigenerational effects of Cd stress on parasitoid reproductive strategies and performance, particularly in species with contrasting ovigeny syndromes, remain poorly understood. Here, we compared the short-term (F1) and long-term (F5) effects of host-mediated Cd exposure on the synovigenic Trichogramma cacoeciae and the proovigenic T. dendrolimi. Cadmium exposure did not shift the core oviposition rhythm of either species,

Fruit Pulps Enhance Longevity and Parasitism of Trichopria drosophilae, a Pupal Parasitoid of Drosophilid Flies.

Trichopria drosophilae is a cosmopolitan pupal parasitoid of drosophilid pests, including the globally destructive Drosophila suzukii. Improving parasitoid fitness through nutritional supplementation is a promising strategy for biological control, yet the suitability of field-available food resources remains largely unexplored. Here, we assessed how adult diet influences longevity, survival, parasitism, offspring production, and sex ratio of T. drosophilae. Seven dietary treatments were tested: water control, 10% honey solution, banana pulp, blueberry pulp, cherry pulp, Orychophragmus violaceu

Hidden digenean diversity in two African protected areas: metabarcoding as a tool for parasite identification.

African protected areas support exceptional wildlife diversity, yet their parasite diversity remains poorly characterised. Documenting parasite biodiversity is increasingly urgent as global change alters species distributions and threatens to cause mass parasite extinctions. Digenean trematodes are thought to be particularly sensitive to environmental stressors due to their complex life cycles, involving gastropod intermediate hosts and a wide range of secondary and definitive hosts. This study used a metabarcoding approach targeting the nuclear 28S rDNA region with the aim of characterising t

Modelling the impact of diffusion and eutrophic conditions on fungal parasite transmission in poorly-mixed waters.

Fungal parasites are widespread in aquatic ecosystems and play an important role in regulating plankton populations by obligately infecting zooplankton hosts and inducing host mortality. In this study, we develop a transmission dynamics model to describe the interactions among phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fungal parasites within an unstirred chemostat environment. The dynamical properties of the model are investigated, including dissipativity, the existence and stability of steady states, and uniform persistence under suitable conditions on the principal eigenvalues and the basic reproducti…

Functional diversity and evolutionary strategies in nematophagous fungi and plant parasitic nematodes interactions - a review.

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial economic losses globally and severely undermine food security. In this context, nematophagous fungi (NFs) have emerged as promising agents of sustainable biocontrol, owing to their ability to attack, parasitise, and digest nematodes through diverse mechanisms. This review analyses the taxonomic diversity, mechanisms of action, and evolutionary relationships of NFs, highlighting the primary functional groups recognized for their ecosystem services in soil. These include trapping fungi, endoparasites, egg and female parasites, toxin producers, a…

Microfluidic platform for automatic quantification of malaria parasite invasion under physiological flow conditions.

Understanding the impact of forces generated by blood flow on biological processes in the circulatory system, such as the invasion of human red blood cells by malaria parasites, is currently limited by the lack of experimental systems that integrate them. Recent systematic quantification of the growth of Plasmodium falciparum, the species that causes the majority of malaria mortality, under a range of shaking conditions has shown that parasite invasion of erythrocytes is affected by the shear stress to which the interacting P. falciparum merozoites and their target red blood cells are exposed.…

The CCCH-type zinc-finger Pf MD3 promotes translation for malaria parasite transmission.

Sexual maturation and fertility of the malaria causing parasite, Plasmodium spp., is critical to transmission between hosts. This developmen … ocyte proteins encoded by these Pf MD3-bound transcripts decreased significantly in Pf MD3 knockout parasites, suggesting that Pf MD3 impacts translation. In addition to RNA-binding, Pf MD3 also interacts with proteins involved in mRNA processing and nuclear export that influence translational regulation. This study establishes Pf MD3 as an RNA-binding prot …
