Implementation of a national school-based Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine campaign in Fiji: knowledge, vaccine acceptability and information needs of parents.

BACKGROUND: In 2008 Fiji implemented a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine campaign targeting all girls aged 9-12 years through the existing school-based immunisation program. Parents of vaccine-eligible girls were asked to provide written consent for vaccination. The purpose of this study was to describe parents' knowledge, experiences and satisfaction with the campaign, the extent to which information needs for vaccine decision-making were met, and what factors were associated with vaccine consent. METHODS: Following vaccine introduction, a cross-sectional telephone survey was con

Parental psychopathology, parenting styles, and the risk of social phobia in offspring: a prospective-longitudinal community study.

BACKGROUND: This article examines the associations between DSM-IV social phobia and parental psychopathology, parenting style, and characteristics of family functioning in a representative community sample of adolescents. METHODS: Findings are based on baseline and first follow-up data of 1047 adolescents aged 14 to 17 years at baseline (response rate, 74.3%), and independent diagnostic interviews with one of their parents. Diagnostic assessments in parents and adolescents were based on the DSM-IV algorithms of the Munich-Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Parenting style (rejectio

Early Childhood Emotional, Relational, and Stress-Related Outcomes Following Infant Cardiac Surgery.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) experience significant early-life stress through medical interventions and hospitalization, shaping physiological and psychological development. This study examined emotional and behavioral regulation and salivary cortisol responses in preschool-aged children who underwent cardiac surgery in infancy, and explored the parent-child relationship as a source of co-regulation and buffering support. In this prospective cohort, 22 preschoolers with CHD and their parents participated in a hospital-based laboratory visit. Child salivary cortisol was collecte…

Identifying risk and protective factors in the transmission of chronic pain from mothers to children: a longitudinal cohort study.

Chronic pain is common and can significantly affect the individual and their family. Indeed, children have an increased risk of developing chronic pain when one or both of their parents have it. However, many children of parents with chronic pain do not report pain problems. The aim of this longitudinal study was to identify psychosocial factors throughout childhood that either increased or decreased the odds for chronic pain among children of mothers with and without chronic pain. Participants were 1128 mother-child dyads from a community-based cohort. Mothers self-reported on their chronic p

Paediatric Pain Medicine: Pain Differences, Recognition and Coping Acute Procedural Pain in Paediatric Emergency Room.

Paediatric pain and its assessment and management are challenging for medical professionals, especially in an urgent care environment. Patients in a paediatric emergency room (PER) often undergo painful procedures which are an additional source of distress, anxiety, and pain. Paediatric procedural pain is often underestimated and neglected because of various myths, beliefs, and difficulties in its evaluation and treatment. However, it is very different from other origins of pain as it can be preventable. It is known that neonates and children can feel pain and that it has long-term effects tha

Excess mortality in children born to opioid-addicted parents: A national register study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Young offspring of individuals with opioid use disorders have great exposure to a wide array of social disadvantages and stressors. This study aimed to investigate excess mortality before the age of six and predictors of premature death in children born to opioid-involved parents. METHODS: A total of 3210 children born between 2004 and 2009 to parents with opioid use disorders (roughly a quarter of whom were born after parental methadone treatment enrollment) were identified in Taiwan. Information concerning sociodemographic characteristics, history of medical condition, and survi

Cocaine-induced dystonic reaction: an unlikely presentation of child neglect.

Child neglect can be difficult to recognize. Parental substance abuse may place a child at increased risk of neglect. This report reviews 2 cases of dystonic reaction in children after accidental exposure to cocaine in their home environments. The reports are followed by a review of proposed physiologic mechanisms for cocaine-induced dystonia and a discussion on neurological symptoms that may develop after cocaine exposure. Pediatric emergency physicians should consider cocaine exposure when a child of any age presents with abnormal movements. Dystonic reaction is an uncommon, but reported, co

Autonomic reactivity and clinical severity in children with sickle cell disease.

Individual differences in autonomic nervous system reactivity have been studied in relation to physical and mental health outcomes, but rarely among children with chronic disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations among autonomic reactivity, clinical severity, family stressors, and mental health symptoms in children with homozygous sickle cell disease. Nineteen children with homozygous sickle cell disease participated in a cross-sectional study involving parent-completed measures, medical record reviews and laboratory-based measures of autonomic nervous system responses

A primer on early childhood obesity and parental influence.

Childhood obesity is a common health problem facing U.S. children with an increasing prevalence particularly in certain populations. Recognizing obesity in children is a clinical determination with specific measures that can indicate potential future associated health problems, but parental perception of overweight and/or obesity is influenced by other conditions. This primer offers a brief synopsis of parental influence in the etiology of early childhood obesity beginning with parameters of obesity and how it is operationalized through measurement. The importance of parental perceptions of th

Gender differences in the development of substance-related problems: the impact of family history of alcoholism, family history of violence and childhood conduct problems.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences regarding the relative influence of family history of alcoholism (FHA) and family history of violence (FHV) on reported childhood conduct problems (CCP) and adult problems with alcohol, drugs and violence. METHOD: The participants were 110 men and 103 women with alcohol-related problems recruited within 30 days of enrolling in treatment for substance abuse or dependence. Participants completed self-report measures of pretreatment violence, FHV, CCP, substance use and consequences, and demographics; a semi-structured interview was used to asses

Behavioral symptoms and psychiatric diagnoses among 162 children in nonalcoholic or alcoholic families.

OBJECTIVE: People with alcoholic relatives have high rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as adults, but their patterns of problems earlier in life are less clear. Many studies have not controlled for parental disorders other than alcoholism or for parents' socioeconomic status and general life functioning. The authors' goal was to conduct a study controlling for such factors. METHOD: Personal structured interviews and a behavioral checklist were administered to the parents of 162 children 7 years old or older whose fathers had participated in the 15-year follow-up of 453 sons of alcoholics

[Anesthesia for hand surgery in patients with bullous epidermolysis].

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic disease, characterized by the formation of bullae in the skin and squamous epithelium following minimal trauma. The majority of surgical indications specific to this disease concern autosomal recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). Hand surgery is one of the fields of surgery involved. The cicatricial course of the lesions results in retraction and pseudosyndactylization of the fingers, sometimes leading to complete destruction of the hand. Since 1988, we have treated 23 patients, including 11 children under the age of 8 years and weighing les

Dialogues with preadolescents and adolescents: mother-child interaction patterns in affectively ill and well dyads.

This study examined affective/communicative patterns in the interactions of unipolar, bipolar, and well mothers with their preadolescent and adolescent children. As part of a large longitudinal project, mother-child interaction was assessed for two siblings ages 8 to 11 and 12 to 16. Interactional difficulties were linked to both maternal affective illness and child problem status. Preadolescent children appeared more comfortable/happy with well mothers than with affectively ill mothers. Mothers and their preadolescents were more critical/irritable with each other when the child had a psychiat

When adult children migrate: Intergenerational solidarity, family functioning, and subjective wellbeing among older parents left behind in rural China.

China's sustained rural-to-urban labor migration has produced a population of older parents whose adult children work at a substantial distance from the home village. We examined whether the out-migration of adult children (respondents' grown offspring who had left the household for work) was associated with family functioning and subjective well-being among older parents remaining in three rural Chinese provinces (Sichuan, Anhui, and Henan), and which intergenerational solidarity pathways accounted for those associations. We conducted a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey of 479 rural

The integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) and its potential to reduce the misuse of antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: The Strategy of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) was introduced in Central Asia and Europe to address the absence of evidence-based guidelines, the misuse of antibiotics, polypharmacy and over-hospitalization of children. A study carried out in 16 countries analysed the status and strengths of as well as the barriers to IMCI implementation and investigated how different health systems affect the problems IMCI aims to address. Here we present findings in relation to IMCI's effects on the rational use of drugs, particularly the improved rational use of antibiotic

Cognitive characteristics of children treated for deformational plagiocephaly and parental perception of the therapy.

BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is a common acquired skull deformity, with the highest incidence at the age of 4 months (19.7%). As it is considered benign, good cosmetic outcome is the primary aim of treatment, which includes either repositioning therapy (RT) with or without physiotherapy or molding helmet therapy (MHT). However, the issue of possible developmental delays in this group has been investigated. METHODS: Children aged 2-7 years previously treated with RT or MHT for DP were eligible for the study. Patients were examined by a psychologist using Stanford-Binet 5 Scale

Cardiac arrest in infants, children, and adolescents: long-term emotional and behavioral functioning.

UNLABELLED: Very little is known about the psychological consequences of a cardiac arrest (CA) during childhood. Our aim was to assess long-term emotional and behavioral functioning, and its predictors, in survivors of CA in childhood. This long-term follow-up study involved all consecutive infants, children, and adolescents surviving CA in a tertiary-care university children's hospital between January 2002 and December 2011. Emotional and behavioral functioning was assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Teacher's Report Form (TRF), and Youth Self-Report (YSR). Of the eligible 107

Death, bereavement and randomised controlled trials (BRACELET): a methodological study of policy and practice in neonatal and paediatric intensive care trials.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have seldom included bereaved parents in studies of participants' views of randomised controlled trials (RCTs); hence our understanding of the impact of trials is based on skewed and incomplete samples. Little is known about parental experiences of the death of a child subsequent to their enrolment in a trial or of provision made for this experience by clinicians and trial teams. The Bereavement and RAndomised ControlLEd Trials (BRACELET) study was funded to consider bereavement in the context of paediatric intensive care (PIC) and neonatal intensive care (NIC) trials.
