Byars two-stage procedure for hypospadias after urethral plate transection.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the outcomes of primary hypospadias repaired with the Byars two-stage procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Primary hyp … glans dehiscence; two urethral strictures, which developed after fistula repair; and one concealed penis. No recurrent penile curvature was recorded. CONCLUSIONS: The Byars two-stage procedure is an option for primary hypospadias when the urethral plate is transected. It had an 11.8% complication rate in this present study.

Erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is often a comorbid condition commonly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is important for physicians to understand that the relationship between ED and CVD is not a coincidence but rather a warning signal. The fact that the symptoms of ED normally arise before the symptoms of a cardiovascular event gives physicians the unique opportunity to see the possible future of their patients' cardiovascular health. Vascular disease is the most common cause of ED. This article reviews the incidence of CVD and ED, the pathophysiology of ED, the risk factors associa

Validity and reliability of a smartphone application for the assessment of penile deformity in Peyronie's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Available methods to evaluate men with Peyronie's disease (PD) are limited by the inability to accurately and reproducibly measure penile deformity. AIM.: The study aims to evaluate the performance of a smartphone application for the measurement of penile curvature and narrowing. METHODS: A smartphone application, the University of Washington Peyronie's Examination Network (UWPEN), was developed for this purpose. To assess penile curvature, 15 single cylinders of malleable penile prostheses were molded to varying curvature angles. Three blinded observers nonsequentially measured

The penile tourniquet.

Tourniquets are commonly used in penile surgery to achieve a bloodless operating field or produce artificial erections intraoperatively. Several techniques have been described, but there is a paucity of data and a lack of guidelines to direct their safe use. In penile surgery, it is the local rather than systemic effects of tourniquet use that are the main concern. Tourniquet time should be kept to a minimum, as the limited data available suggests that reperfusion injury can occur even after short periods of ischaemia. High risk groups such as diabetics and arteriopaths are at particular risk.

Child non-ischemic priapism, a conservative approach: case report and updated review.

Non-ischemic priapism in children is an uncommon entity usually related to blunt trauma in the perineal region and subsequent fistula formation into the corpus cavernosum. In this report we present the case of a 7-year-old boy who had undergone perineal trauma and developed non-ischemic priapism confirmed radiologically. He was treated by conservative measures along with ultrasonographic monitoring. We discuss the diagnostic approach, the radiologic findings and the mainly conservative management of this infrequent pathology.

Therapeutic strategies for patients with micropenis or penile dysmorphic disorder.

Micropenis in adults is defined as a stretched length of <7.5 cm. Many aetiologies exist, including congenital and endocrinological causes as well as pathological conditions, such as penile lichen sclerosus, trauma and genital cancer. The resulting reduction in functional penile length can lead to considerable psychosexual morbidity. Furthermore, the subset of patients with micropenis who also suffer from penile dysmorphic disorder require careful and intensive psychological counselling. Corrective surgery for micropenis can be performed in patients with realistic expectations. Total phallopla…

Penile length is comparable in boys with and without hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that penile length is negatively correlated to the degree of hypospadias; however, there are no studies … edures excluding those with endocrine disorders. We measured the length of the dorsal aspect of the penis in the flaccid state, without stretching. We then established, using our control group, a range of 'normal' values for penile length in our population and determined whether children with hypospadias were within this 'normal' range. RESULTS: Mean p …

[Penile dermatological lesions: how to identify premalignant lesions?].

Penile squamous cell carcinoma is a highly evolving tumor. Thus an early diagnosis is a major matter in order to avoid tumoral spread and mutilating surgery. Intra-epithelial neoplasia is a carcinoma in situ involving a disorganized cytological structure and intraepithelial architecture without any change on the derma. It has a bimodal pathogenesis: it can be induced by papilloma virus HPV infection and thus Bowen's disease or Bowenoïd papulosis, or by a lichen sclerosus. Bowen's disease concerns mainly men after 50 years old. There are not any spontaneous remission and it transforms slowly in

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia: A five-hundred year-long lesson.

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia was born five centuries ago in Regalbuto, a small town in the center of Sicily. After his medical course in Padua, under the guidance of Vesalius and Fallopius, he gained international fame as a physician and was recruited as a Professor of human anatomy in Naples and later in Palermo. He is remembered as "the new Galen" or "the Sicilian Hippocrates." He contributed to the knowledge of human anatomy through the description of single bones rather than the whole skeleton. In particular, he was the first to describe the "stapes," the "lesser wings of the sphenoid" and v
