Investigation of patients, healthy persons, and ticks in Jinghe County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China, for evidence of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis demonstrated strong evidence for a high prevalence of pathogenic SFG rickettsiae. A case is reported of a patient who experienced numerous episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) during which anterograde amnesia was less prominent than usual, and who developed a permanent selective retrograde amnesia. On formal testing, he performed well on traditional verbal memory tests, but showed marked retrograde amnesia for verbal material, including items on a famous voices recognition test. He was administered a paired-associate learning test where the names of famous personalities for which he was amnesic were associated with incongruous activities (e.g. John Newcombe-singing).

In a population of 822 healthy adult volunteers, 2% of the 410 men and 1.5% of the 412 women showed a positive patch test reaction to 0.5% potassium dichromate in pet. Most of the positive reactions (10/14) occurred in the group of 110 offset printers, lithographers and printing plant cleaners with present occupational exposure to chromium. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate audiovestibular function in patients with panic disorder and healthy subjects by using vestibular and audiologic tests.
METHODS: Thirty-four panic disorder patients and 20 healthy control subjects were assessed by using clinical otoneurological examination, pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, and electronystagmography (ENG). All patients were evaluated with the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).

We isolated a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) BA.2 variant from a person with coronavirus disease 2019 recrudescence after nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment. Antiviral sensitivity and neutralizing antibody testing were performed with both parental SARS-CoV-2 and multiple variants of concern. We found that neither nirmatrelvir resistance nor absence of neutralizing immunity was a likely cause of the recrudescence.

The review summarizes existing information on coaching and potential treatment-and-prophylactic effect of backward walking in elderly. It provides information on the success of the backward walking to restore a stable body position and gait in persons with hemiplegia after stroke, suffering from Parkinson's disease and diabetic foot syndrome. It is noted that the tests with backward walking can be used for diagnostic purposes - to assess the severity of impaired coordination and motor skills and to predict the probability of falling in the elderly.

CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old married British man presented with 4 months of falls and confusion. HIV antibody test, performed after exclusion of other diagnoses, was positive. Institution of triple antiretroviral therapy resulted in an almost complete recovery.
DISCUSSION: HIV infection is now far more common than syphilis. It may be highly amenable to treatment and needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of the older person with dementia.

The Valsalva maneuver (VM) is a widely used test for autonomic nervous system function. It consists of a physiologic effort which is often performed in everyday life. Extreme effort may cause faintness or fainting, even in normal persons. The VM can help the physician manage loss of consciousness of unknown cause. Because of similarity of the effect of VM to that of hyperventilation on the cerebral circulation we suggest wider application of this maneuver in clinical electroencephalography.

The effect of xylometazolin spray (OTRIVEN) on the nasal mucosa was tested on persons with and without clinical signs of rhinitis and sinusitis. MRI is an excellent means to show the decongestive effect. The reaction is chiefly seen at the inferior and middle nasal concha and becomes manifest in a few minutes. No significant effect is noticeable at the maxillary sinus mucosa and infiltrated ethmoidal sinus. Generally, it is possible to show and examine the pharmacological effects that change the size and the liquid consistency of organs.

Sticks Hemastix, reactive to haematuria have been tested into a focus ivory coast located in a humid savanna area. Into this focus the prevalence rate of urinary schistosomiasis (Schistosoma haematobium) was 27% taken as a whole and 40% for 5 to 19 years old persons. This study has shown that reactive sticks have a good sensitivity and an acceptable specificity compared with filtration. More, a good correlation between intensity of eggs count and the haematuria is observed.

The nasal mucociliary transport was measured on 15 healthy test subjects, using the saccharine method, before and after exposure to hair-spray and Freon. The hair-spray reduced the mucociliary transport in the nose for more than 1 h, whereas Freon had no effect.
