OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep is frequently reported in children with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) and cerebral palsy (CP) however breathing disorders during sleep are often the clinical focus. Periodic limb movements (PLMs) have an increased prevalence in adults with NMD and may contribute to sleep disturbance in this population. We assessed the prevalence of PLMs in children with NMD or CP.
METHODS: Retrospective review of polysomnography (PSG) with leg electromyography in children age 1-18 years with NMD (including Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy) or CP pe

PURPOSE: Lateral pharyngeal wall collapse, linked to weak pharyngeal wall stability, is characteristic of severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Soft palate webbing flap palatopharyngoplasty (SPWFPP) has been introduced to enhance the stability of the lateral pharyngeal wall with minimal postoperative complications by eliminating the need for tonsillectomy. This study analyzed the anatomic findings of oropharynx for determination of outcome in OSA patients requiring SPWFPP.
METHODS: Twenty-eight OSA patients who underwent SPWFPP combined with septoturbinoplasty were included in this s

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at risk for QTc prolongation, a known risk factor for increased mortality. The pro-QTc score can help identify individuals at increased risk for mortality associated with increased QTc however, it has not been evaluated in patients with OSA. The goal of this study was to evaluate the pro-QTc score in patients with OSA.
METHODS: Medical records of patients undergoing a sleep study at our sleep center from February 2012 to August 2020 were analyzed. Presence or absence of OSA was determined by polysomnography. The pro-QTc score was c

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Dementia is a growing cause of disability and loss of independence in the elderly, yet remains largely underdiagnosed. Early detection and classification of dementia can help close this diagnostic gap and improve management of disease progression. Altered oscillations in brain activity during sleep are an early feature of neurodegenerative diseases and be used to identify those on the verge of cognitive decline.
METHODS: Our observational cross-sectional study used a clinical dataset of 10 784 polysomnography from 8044 participants. Sleep macro- and micro-structural features

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that age-related changes in cerebral health may be sensitive to vascular risk modifiers, such as physical activity and sleep.
OBJECTIVE: We examine whether cardiorespiratory fitness modifies the association of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity with MRI-assessed measures of cerebral structure and perfusion.
METHODS: Using data from a cross-sectional sample of participants (n = 129, 51% female, age range 49.6-85.3 years) in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort study, we estimated linear models of MRI-assessed total and regional gray matter (GM) and white matte

RATIONALE: Obstructive sleep apnea is highly prevalent in children with asthma, particularly in obese children. The sleep-related breathing disorder screening questionnaire has low screening accuracy for obstructive sleep apnea in children with asthma. Our goal was to identify the questions on the sleep-related breathing disorder survey associated with obstructive sleep apnea in children with asthma.
METHODS: Participants completed the survey, underwent polysomnography and their body mass index z-score was measured. Participants with survey scores above 0.33 were considered high risk for obst

PURPOSE: Sleep-tracking devices have performed well in recent studies that evaluated their use in healthy adults by comparing them with the gold standard sleep assessment technique, polysomnography (PSG). These devices have not been validated for use in patients with psychiatric disorders. Therefore, we tested the performance of three sleep-tracking devices against PSG in patients with psychiatric disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Craniopharyngioma is a brain tumor arising in the region of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Children and adolescents with craniopharyngioma have high survival rates, but often experience significant morbidity, including high rates of sleep disorders. Vulnerabilities to circadian disruption are present in this population, but little is known about circadian health.
METHODS: We present exploratory circadian findings from a prospective trial at a single center. Data presented here are from the baseline timepoint. Fifty-three patients between the ages of 7 and 20 years provided sal

BACKGROUND: Cognitive disorder, parkinsonism, autonomic dysfunction (AuD) and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) can occur prior to or simultaneously with Dementia with Lewy Body (DLB) onset. RBD is generally linked with progressive neurodegenerative traits. However, associations between RBD with DLB, RBD without DLB, and RBD duration effects on DLB symptoms remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To examine DLB symptom frequency and subtypes in RBD, and explore the effects of different RBD onset times on symptoms in de novo DLB patients.
METHODS: In this multicenter investigation, we cons

Robin sequence is a congenital issue resulting in airway obstruction, difficulty feeding, and failure to thrive. Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis is used to improve airway obstruction in these patients, but little data exists characterizing feeding outcomes following surgery. This study aims to evaluate feeding outcomes and weight gain following mandibular distraction for airway correction in infants. A single-center retrospective chart review was conducted, and patients under 12 months old who underwent mandibular distraction between December 2015 and July 2021 were included in the study.
