Examination of 166 patients with optic neuritis revealed that 65 of them developed multiple sclerosis (MS) at different times after optic neuritis. The observation period was 9.4 years on the average. One hundred and fifty children with febrile convulsions (FC) were followed up for 3-10 years. The present investigation has demonstrated that it is advisable to specify different immunologic subvarieties of acute lymphoblastic leukemia based on the detection of superficial markers of blast cells. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia subvarieties are characterized by different clinical and hematological manifestations and differ with respect to the sensitivity to cytostatic therapy. The duration of remissions and lifespans was different in children belonging to different groups.

In pregnancy pre-eclampsia can be complicated by the nephrotic syndrome. We report on the clinical findings in 23 patients who had the nephrotic syndrome in pregnancy with hypertension. We evaluated 14 patients with idiopathic optic neuritis, 50 years of age or older, within 1 month of symptomatic onset from 1980 through 1985. We obtained follow-up information from case records an average of 13 months after initial examination and from telephone interviews an average of 57 months after initial evaluation. We reviewed 26 fractures involving the distal physis of the tibia to identify the patterns of formation and displacement of the subsequent growth disturbance lines. Twenty-one patients showed a regular "normal" pattern of line and healed with no deformity. Three patients had medical physeal arrest revealed by abnormal lines. Two other cases had a minor central physeal arrest without subsequent deformity. The pattern and character of the growth disturbance line can provide an early warning of potential deformity.

We performed chromosome analysis of 15 neuroblastomas found by mass screening using a vanillymandelic acid spot test. We found near triploid chromosome abnormalities, ranging from 60 to 77 chromosomes, in the tumor cells from 14 patients, and hyperdiploidy with the mode of 50 in cells from one. A retrospective study of 107 patients who sustained an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during hospitalization was undertaken to assess the early prognosis of Q wave AMI (55 patients, group 1) and no-Q wave AMI (52 patients, group 2). Forty-one patients in group 1 and 31 in group 2 had documented ischaemia at rest in the period preceding AMI. The incidence of pre-infarction ischaemic attacks was similar in Q wave AMI compared with non-Q wave AMI (average daily incidence per patient 3.1 +/- 4.3 vs 3.0 +/- 4.3). A 'crescendo' pattern of pre-infarction angina was rarely observed in both groups.
